Recipe for Greek Style Fried Sweet Cheese Pies

Myzithra is a favorite Greek dessert cheese that makes for delicious fried sweet cheese pies.

Greek Style Fried Sweet Cheese Pie (Kaltsounia Sto Tigani) Recipe Ingredients:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 lb. manouri or cottage cheese
  • 1 lightly beaten egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Olive oil for frying
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon

How to Bake Sweet Cheese Pies:

Prepare the dough by combining the flour, olive oil, salt and water. Leave, covered, for an hour.

Mix cheese, egg, cinnamon and sugar in a large bowl

Roll out the dough 1/8 inch thick, onto a floured board and cut into small rounds 3 inches in diameter. Place 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture on each round of dough, moisten edges; fold over and seal well, pressing the edges together with a fork.

Deep fry in hot oil until golden brown.

Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and serve hot.
