What to Do in Rhodes if You Only Have One Day

Written by in , Comments Off on What to Do in Rhodes if You Only Have One Day

Rhodes is a popular stop for Greek island hoppers, and many travelers only spend a few hours here if it’s a port that is part of a cruise or other boat trip. The problem is, there’s so much to do on this island that it can be hard to figure out how to spend your limited time. You can take in the history, spend time at the beach, or find some other way to spend your time. It all depends on what your interests are. Here are some ideas for things that you can do that are fairly convenient to the cruise port on the island:

Visit the Palace of the Grandmasters

Although like much of Greece Rhodes has an ancient past, it’s the medieval history that is the most intriguing. At one point, the island was the official headquarters of the Knights of Saint John and the palace is where this activity was centralized. Even if you aren’t a history buff, you should really take some time to explore the Palace of the Grandmaster and the other landmarks that are near it, such as the old hospital. If you have plenty of time and this interests you, consider taking a tour so that you can get the whole experience.

Explore Old Town

The Old Town of the main city in Rhodes is very close to where most of the ships will drop people off. Rather than pass through this historic section of the island, you might want to stay put and spend most of your time here! Most of the historical sites in this part of Rhodes are contained here, including the Palace of the Grandmasters. There’s also the historic street leading up to the palace, called the Street of the Knights, and also an Ancient Olympic Stadium. Make sure you spend some time browsing in the shops and taking it all in before you head back to your ship.

Lounge on the Beach

Even if you aren’t able to spend a lot of time at the beach, you should at least stop in for a few minutes. If you’re a beach lover you might want to spend even more time here. Beaches such as Elli Beach are within walking distance of where you’ll be. Casino Beach and Akti Miaouli is another beach that is located in Rhodes Town that is worth visiting. If you really love the beach another option is to take a taxi to one of the beaches outside of Rhodes Town. Good options for you include Faliraki Beach and Tsambika Beach.

There are a lot of options for what you can do while visiting Rhodes. Even if you have a limited time, you can still do most of the above things if you want to get a taste of all of it. Consider taking a tour to visit the historical landmarks, that way you might still have time for other activities, such as the beach.
