Written by in , Comments Off on What to Do in the Athenian Riviera

The Athenian Riviera, also known as the Apollo Coast, is located in Greece in an area to the south of Athens. In fact, it is only about sixteen kilometers, or ten miles, away from the center of the city. The Athenian Riviera includes Lagonisi, Varkiza, Sounio, Floisvos Marina, Voula, Anavyssos, Vouliagmeni and Glyfada.

The area is filled with idyllic beaches, historical sites, and towns that are worth exploring. There are also numerous attractions, such as  nightclubs, historic sites and beaches. Here’s more information about what you can do while here:

Enjoy the Beaches

The Athenian Riviera coastline stretches about 48 kilometers, or 30 miles, and as a result, there are plenty of beaches. There are plenty of public beaches located here that are worth visiting.  Stay away from the private beaches because many of these are not open to the public. There are some gorgeous public beaches to see, however, so you won’t miss out on anything. Consider visiting Astir Vouliagmeni Beach, Kavoui Beach, Sounio Beach, and Asimakis Beach during your stay. If you’re staying in Athens and only want to leave the city for a day, consider Edem Beach, which is the closest beach from the center of the city.

Go Shopping in Glyfada

When the Hellenikon Airport was still open, Glyfada was a major hub of activity. It has since closed, but there is still plenty to do here, include shop. There are plenty of  cafes, boutique stores, bars and eateries here and it has been a favorite place for celebrities, American families, and millionaires who have their homes here. While in Glyfada, you can find perfect shopping places such as The Loom, Athens Metro Mall and Athens Urban Adventures.

Visit the Temple of Poseidon

The Temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444 BC at Cape Sounion, which is located about seventy kilometers south of Athens. Built to honor Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, this temple is perched on a cliff and overlooks the sea. As a result, you can also enjoy some amazing views while here. Head here during the morning or at sunset for some of the best lighting and the best view.

Visit Lake Vouliagmeni

Although not located on the sea, Lake Vouliagmeni is one of the premier natural attractions to visit in the Athenian Riviera. The waters here are fairly warm, which makes it a great place for swimming. It is also extremely beautiful because the lake itself is surrounded by red rocks and the sky is usually a deep blue. It’s a great place to have a picnic, as well. The sea is nearby, so you will likely find that this lake is a nice escape from the typical seaside culture. It also can offer you a way to enjoy the beautiful doors away from some of the larger tourist crowds.

On your visit to Greece, you won’t want to miss these top attractions in the Athenian Riviera. This is a great place to visit in the Athens area, filled with plenty of things to do.
