Island Day Trips from Rhodes

Written by in , Comments Off on Island Day Trips from Rhodes

Rhodes is one of those unique islands where there is no shortage of things to do. It has a rich history so there are plenty of landmarks to see, and is also filled with some of Greece’s best beaches. Despite that, you could feel as if you want to do something a little different with your time. Depending on how long your trip to Rhodes is, you might feel as if you want to venture out beyond Rhodes and see something else without packing your bags and settling somewhere else.

Rhodes is the largest of the islands in the Dodecanese island group, which means that there are some islands that are close enough to it in order to be enjoyable day trips. These islands are a perfect way to satisfy your urge to travel without relocated. Here’s more information:

Symi

Symi is an easy ferry ride from the island of Rhodes since the two islands are so close to one another. Once you end up at the ferry port, it should only take about 1 hour and 45 minutes of travel time on the ferry in order to get to Symi. Once there, you will likely dock in Ano Symi, which is a gorgeous port town worth exploring. The scenery on this island is enchanted, and you can easily spend the whole day here finding new things to discover. Before you go back to Rhodes, you’ll want to spend time at the harbor in Yialos and also in a town called Horio, which is perched above Yialos.

Kastellorizo

Another great island to visit Kastellorizo, which is also called Megisti, is definitely worth the trip from Rhodes. The Greek name for the island, Megisti, is literally translated to mean, “the biggest.” This is an interesting point because Kastellorizo is actually the smallest in area of the all the islands in the Dodecanese islands. There aren’t many travelers here so when you do visit, you’ll notice that it is fairly quiet. Locals live their daily, traditional lives to the fullest, which means this is an excellent place to go if you are looking for a bit of an escape from the busy tourist culture that you’ll find on Rhodes. The port here is especially worth exploring since it is so so colorful and welcoming. Head to Mandraki Harbor on Rhodes if you want to visit here, but pay careful attention to the schedule so that you can make it back to Rhodes on time. It takes about 2.5 hours by boat to get to Kastellorizo from Rhodes.

Chalki

Chalki, also referred as Halki, is another island that is worth visiting. The ferry ride from Rhodes only takes about an hour and this makes it especially appealing. This is one of those places that has maintained its traditional vibe. It is a fairly small island and there aren’t a lot of tourists who make their way here. Spend your time exploring the villages and coastline. While you’re at it, be sure to sit at a nice cafe, taverna, or restaurant and enjoy a traditional meal before you head back.

While on Rhodes, you won’t want to miss the chance to take one of these easy island day trips!
