Things to Know About Folegandros Greece

Don’t let your first impression of Folegandros last too long. Most people first encounter the island’s port, Karavostasi, since that’s the only way to access the island. Karavostasi is a noisy, bustling place and if your trip is concentrated here for the duration of your stay, you won’t understand the true flavor of the island. In actuality, Folegandros is about more than its port town, and it takes time to get to know the island on a more intimate level.
One thing that adds to its appeal is the capital city of Chora, which is actually set further inland that what you would expect. Like other islands in the Cyclades, the capital city was set back away from the sea in order to protect from pirates and other invaders. To make it even harder to reach, much of the town hugs expansive cliffs with steep drops upwards of two hundred feet. While in the city, pay attention to the way it’s laid out. Much of it is comprised of a series of city squares, which are connected by a pathways and roads. This layout was no doubt created before cars were invented. Even though driving in the city is fairly easy, some of the roads are a bit narrower than what you’d expect.
Like most islands in Greece, there is no shortage of beautiful beaches on Folegandros. If simplicity is what you’re after, there’s a nice beach right in the port town of Karvostasi. For a bit of adventure, however, hire a boat to take you to Katergo, an isolated beach that is best reached by boat. Spending the day here will certainly make for a memorable escape. Like many Greek beaches, you can either spend the whole day relaxing by the water, or you can do something a bit more active, such as go scuba diving, snorkeling, or even kayaking.
There’s also no shortage of interesting places to eat and drink on this island. The cuisine on the island is much like it is throughout the rest of Greece. By using fresh ingredients, such as fresh-caught seafood and homegrown vegetables and herbs, it will be hard to have a bad meal. Accompany your food with the local wines and you’ll have a perfect experience! There’s also plenty of opportunities to enjoy nightlife. Chora and Karavostasi have plenty of choices for every taste – whether you want a bar, taverna, or simply a quiet place to have a glass of wine or two – you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for on this island.
Folegandros is considered to be a bit of a paradise, thanks to its unique landscape. Since there is a history of volcanic activity on the island, remnants of this past can be glimpsed in the geography of the island. To see some of these top spots close up, it can be fun to walk through some of the older trails. This island attracts hikers from all over the world, who are drawn here because of the challenging terrain.
No matter what you decide to do while here, you’re sure to find something that you’ll enjoy!
