When it comes to visiting Greece, there are certain things that you absolutely must do. Athens should be at the top of your list, especially if you love learning about Ancient Greek History. However, the city can be busy and staying near places such as the Plaka can have you missing out on some of the other things that make the city great, such as the beaches that are located just south of Athens. Instead of staying in the heart of the city, why not stay in the nearby Glyfada instead? If you do, you’ll be in good company. Where Glyfada is Located
If you want to spend time in Athens and the surrounding area, Glyfada is a good choice. Even though it is part of the “Greater Athens” area, it isn’t as busy as the city itself. As a suburb, Glyfada allows you to enjoy the city on your own terms. It’s located just south of the city on the Saronic Gulf and has some beautiful views of the sea. If you’re lucky, you can find a hotel that is near the beach and that has great views of the water. Technically, it goes from the foot of the Hymettus Mountain all the way to the Saronic Gulf. It is also near the main airport in Athens.
Sit at the Beach
Being able to enjoy the beach culture is a major draw for people who stay in Glyfada. Sure, Athens has plenty of historical and cultural things to experience, such as the Parthenon and the National Archaeological Museum. However, sometimes all you want to do is lounge on the beach underneath the warm, Greek sun! There are plenty of nightclubs, restaurants, and tavernas near the main Glyfada Beach and there are also options right on the beach itself. There are also plenty of chairs to rent. If you know that you want to spend most of the time on the beach, try finding a resort that has its own private beach space!
Enjoy the Nightlife
Another thing that people flock to Glyfada for is the nightlife. Sure, there are some great clubs in the heart of the city, but Glyfada is where some of the most coveted are located. In order to find the best clubs, you may want to ask at your hotel or resort. You should also travel during peak tourist season in order to get the biggest crowds in the clubs.
Once you spend time here, it is easy to see why Glyfada is looked at as a playground for the wealthy. Many Greek millionaires have their homes here, and wealthy people from all over the world love to spend time here. Despite its reputation, however, it is quite affordable for those who aren’t wealthy. Many of the resorts in Glyfada are priced very reasonably. This is also a great place to stay if you want to enjoy the cultural aspects of Athens while still staying at the beach.
