While visiting the Greek island of Corfu, the word “idyllic” might pop in your head. It is a place that seems to represent everything great about the Greek islands. While it was once a sanctuary for Odysseus during a shipwreck, as told by Homer in the Odyssey, it is a now a refuge for travelers looking to capture a little bit of the magic for themselves. While here, though, you may realize that there is so much to do here, you’re having trouble choosing your ideal activities.

If you have some extra time or want to extend past the typical resort communities, consider visiting the traditional village of Lakones. Located near the resort town of Paleokastritsa, Lakones is worthy of  visit all on its own. Here’s more information:

Getting to Lakones Village

Before you can spend time at Lakones, you must first make your way to the island of Corfu. Since it is a popular island, there is a regional airport here with flights that regularly depart from Athens. Check flight schedules because there may be flights into Corfu from other locations, such as other airports in Greece. The airport is fairly close to Corfu Town.  It is also possible to take a ferry to the island that regularly depart from islands such as Patra. There are even some that depart from Italy, since Corfu is so close to the Italian border. If you’re originating in Greece, you’ll want to check the ferry schedule for the best way to get here. Once you arrive on the island, you’ll need to make your way to Lakones when you’re ready to visit. It takes about forty minutes to drive from the airport and it’s about a 25 kilometer drive.

Why Visit Lakones

One of the biggest reasons why you’ll want to take your time to visit Lakones is that it is a very traditional village. Since travelers don’t always make their way her, you can relax and get a sense of how the locals really live. Sure, visiting the tourist resorts can be fun, but sometimes you just need a break. Since the village is also incredibly beautiful, it is also a great places for walking. In particularly, pay attention to some of the older homs and buildings. Some of them date as far back as the 18th Century. While here, don’t forget to gaze at the view of the sea because it’s pretty stunning.

Go Hiking in Lakones

Many consider this village an ideal spot to use as a starting point for some area hikes. In addition to meandering through the streets of the town, there are a few paths that lead to places like Paleokastritsa. In fact, if you are staying in Paleokastritsa, you might want to hike from the larger resort village to Lakones. You can always take a taxi back to your resort once you’re done your walk. There are several paths that lead back and forth from Lakones to Paleokastritsa so you can always take a different route back for some variety.

While on Corfu, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the village of Lakones.
