Best Places to Shop in Athens

Written by in , Comments Off on Best Places to Shop in Athens

Athens is the biggest city in Greece. This means that as a guest, it can be hard to find the best places to go! While visiting, it’s only natural that you’ll want to do some shopping to bring home a few souvenirs. Sure, you can walk into any tourist shop and buy a few kitschy items to throw in your suitcase. However, it’s a lot more fun to use shopping as a way to experience another part of the Greek culture! You simply can’t do this in the traditional tourist shops. Here are some of the best places to shop in Athens. Many of these have more than just “tourist” items. These are where the locals often go to do their shopping!

Ermou Street

If you love fashion, it’s fun to visit the clothing shops in other countries. Some of the styles are likely different than what you’re used to, and you can find some real gems to take home with you! Ermou street is known for having a lot of shops with fashionable clothing at great prices. There are also other stores, such as tourist shops, to explore here as well. However, the main draw here is to go into some of the mainstream shops. Some of them, such as Hondos Center, have several locations throughout Greece.

Athinas Street

For those who love casual clothing, Athinas Street is the place to be! Shop owners regularly carry simple items, such as t-shirts and jeans, at great prices. It’s also close to Ermou Street, so you can spend the day browsing in some of the fashionable shops on Ermou, and then the casual ones on Athinas Street, while still having plenty of time left to enjoy some of the famous Athenian restaurants and bars!

There’s also a lot of food markets on this street, which means that you can always bring home some authentic Greek food products to enjoy (as long as they clear customs!) You can find much better deals on food products here than you would in some of the more touristy places. Those shops tend to mark up their prices.

Aeolou and Agios Markos Streets

Even though you can find good deals in some of the other shopping districts, most of the best bargains are located on Aeolou and Agios Markos Streets. This is where Athenians do their real bargain hunting! In fact, this is where the city’s hobbyists end up. There are plenty of shops selling anything from art supplies to yarn, and they can be found at great prices.

If you want to pick up a unique item for your favorite hobby or craft, this is the place to do it. There are also plenty of home stores here, which means that you can always bring home some authentic Greek kitchen supplies, some of which are different than what you’re used to at home.

While in Athens, it’s worth it to go off the beaten path a little bit to shop away from the tourist traps!
