What to Do on Amorgos

Written by in , Comments Off on What to Do on Amorgos

Amorgos island landscapeWhen asked to describe the island of Amorgos, most people who’ve been conjure up a single adjective – dramatic. No matter what you’re doing, it’s all too easy to get swept up by the stunning scenery. However, that’s not all there is to do on this island – Amorgos is also a place to experience the Greek culture at its finest. Here’s an overview of what to do while on on this island:

Go to the Beach

Like many places in Greece, the beaches are one of the main attractions. Amorgos is no exception. While the island may be fairly small, it also doesn’t lack for beach experiences. In fact, in a country filled with amazing beaches, Mourou Beach does standout as being one of the best. People describe the beach as having beautiful, clear water that remains warm no matter what time of year it is. People enjoy swimming, relaxing, and gazing at the stunning nearby scenery while here. If you want to avoid the tourist crowds, however, you’ll want to visit slightly off peak. The months of September and October, for example, are still warm but the tourist crowds are considerably less than they were in June, July and August.

Go Diving

Sure, you can always sit on the beach and enjoy gazing at the water and the surrounding water. However, the real enchantment of the waters lies underwater – and this is a world you can only see if you go diving. Like many coastal locations in Greece, there is an active tradition of diving on Amorgos. If you would like to explore this other world, visit the Amorgos Diving Center to review all your options. If you want to have an amazing diving experience, this is the place to go! If you don’t have experience, you can also take classes and join a dive group so that you can have a safe and pleasurable dive.

Visit a Monestary

Like many places throughout Greece, Amorgos has an active monastery that guests can visit. The Monastery of Panagia Hozovitissa is one of the island’s chief destinations for travelers. However, before you step foot in the monastery, there are some things to keep in mind. First of all, monasteries are formal places, so proper attire and behavior are necessary. Overall, the people are welcoming as long as you’re not disrespectful. You can also get some exercise here thanks to the massive staircase you’ll need to climb to get to the monastery.

Enjoy the Mountains

The mountains are an important part of the dramatic landscape here, and in order to truly appreciate them, you need to spend some time in them! The island is filled with a network of footpaths that actually were the original roads. You can picture the island’s inhabitants walking or riding their donkeys from one village to the next. Once you see one of these paths, it’s fun to spend some time walking on them, just to see where they go. If you aren’t a fan of hiking, you can certainly appreciate the mountains from a distance. Whenever you see something that catches your fancy, be sure to take plenty of pictures!

The island of Amorgos is truly unique and will be an excellent destination for your vacation.
