The Dormition Table as we call it\, is the fruit of many parishioners’ collective efforts to plan\, organize and execute a decision to start our own soup kitchen. It is providing and serving freshly cooked meals twice a month\, while we hope that we can serve more often.\nWe owe many thanks to those faithful christians who contributed to our Table with their Time\, Treasure and Talents. All of them have tried to fulfill Christ’s Will on earth. A Will which is summarized in these words of His: “For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink…” (Mat. 25:35) and “as much as you did it to one of the least of these brothers\, you did it to me” (Mat. 25:40).\nWe keep praying for their safekeeping\, while we ask the Lord to bestow His blessings upon them\, upon all those in need and upon the world.

It’s a man tied to the railroad tracks who wants to be left alone to die in peace. Alcibiades (Petros Philinnides)\, an out-of-work lingerie designer\, owes money everywhere\, has a wife who cheats on him\, has never had children — for all these reasons he wants to put an end to his life. But when the train actually approaches\, Alcibiades has second thoughts and begs to be released. Nondas agrees to help only if Alcibiades swears he will become his loyal servant. You see\, Nondas has a baby in the car and is traveling around to find her mother. It seems Nondas had slept with many women and one of them dropped off “their” baby so that Nondas could take care of her. He needs Alcibiades to help him on this quest. Meanwhile Alcibiades’s wife is riddled with quilt and tries to rescue her despondent husband with her lover in tow. So amongst sexy lingerie\, multiple mistresses\, the unfaithful wife\, and a hard-nosed father\, love blooms for a little baby—truly the star of the movie. In Greek with English sub-titles. 86 min.

DESCRIPTION:November 9\, Wednesday\, 7pm “Aeschylus’ Oresteia: From vendetta and retribution to civil institutions and community strength: a talk in two parts” \nJoanna Bertsekas\, Ph.D\, will summarize briefly Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy and explain the main theme which is the transformation of justice (Dike) from retribution\, to the rule of law.  Aeschylus wrote his trilogy as the Polis (Athens) was entering the period of direct Democracy and was strengthening its legal and social institutions.\nJoanna Bertsekas is a docent at the Museum of Fine Arts where for nine years she has been conducting tours for the Education department. Images of the Oresteia plays by Aeschylus are represented on vases in the MFA’s renowned Ancient Greek collection. The plays still inspire people around the world and the trilogy is frequently performed on stage.

DESCRIPTION:The Hellenic Culture and Heritage Society\, Inc. presents: Soprano Julie Ziavras presents an acoustic program of Greek classic and popular songs\, capturing the lyric expression and the rich\, deep texture of the Greek spirit and culture.\nWith a variety of songs and ballads ranging from the plaintive to the rhythmic\, Julie’s repertoire includes songs by the most prominent Greek songwriters\, (Hadjidakis\, Theodorakis\, Tsitsanis)\, rembetika (Greek blues) and traditional folk. Many of her selections have lyrics by Nobel Prize winning poets and are of historical and cultural significance. Julie will introduce the songs to enhance the experience for the non-Greek speaking audience\, with an explanation of the musical styles and how they express the history and culture of the Greek people. She is accompanied by pianist Athena Adamopoulos and Kostas Psarros\, bouzouki.\nThere will be an artist reception after the concert and refreshments served. The University is donating light Greek food platters and the Hellenic Culture and Heritage Society will provide pastries. Admission is FREE and the concert is open to the public.
