Sponsored by Somerset Hall Press and the Maliotis Cultural Center.  April 27\, 2014 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM\nPoet and Diplomat Yiorgos Chouliaras:\n“Alexiou’s poetry is strikingly visual and lyrically obsessive.”\nAbout the Book\nAlthough the Astoria section of New York has been considered the largest Hellenic settlement outside of Greece or Cyprus\, it is striking that it has received relatively little attention by writers\, artists\, and social scientists. The present bilingual book of poems and images\, both as a physical object and as a discursive project\, is about a culturally neglected enclave in the midst of ethnic and social transformations. Even in the era of globalization\, every social and artistic action occurs somewhere locally\, and accordingly the poems and images presented here emphasize the role of exile\, of people\, and of place.\nAbout the Author\nNicos Alexiou teaches in the Department of Sociology and the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College\, and he recently received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. His fields of interest are social theory and research\, ethnic studies\, and issues concerning the Greek-American community. He is the founder and director of the Hellenic American Oral History Archive. He is the author of five books of poetry\, and his work has been published in various English and Greek journals and anthologies.\nOrganized and sponsored by the Somerset Hall Press and the Maliotis Cultural Center

DESCRIPTION:In our day and age\, reading books about how to be more effective leaders in the workplace is common practice. When reflecting on contemporary leadership theories\, an Orthodox Christian may recognize some overlaps with fundamental tenets of our faith. What does the Orthodox tradition have to teach us about leadership\, broadly speaking\, for all people in the Church? What does it mean to be leaders in the workplace and people of Orthodox Christian faith? \nFr. Tom is a renowned Orthodox theologian and Dean Emeritus of St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. He travels very little now in his retirement\, but makes the trip to Hellenic College Holy Cross every summer to serve as a professor at the CrossRoad Summer Institute. During his upcoming visit\, he will give a public address on “The Theological Foundations of Leadership\,” as part of an ongoing initiative for Emerging Leaders sponsored by a Leadership 100 grant to the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston.\nThe lecture is free and open to the wider Orthodox community.
