Located between the two popular islands of Naxos and Ios, the island of Iraklia is a great place to get away from the crowds and relax. If you’re looking for a Greek island where you can explore at your own pace and you enjoy nature and being outdoors, Iraklia is a good choice.

The island of Iraklia has no airport, so it can only be accessed via ferry. You can catch a ferry to Iraklia from Naxos and Amorgos, Piraeus, and from the other Cycladic islands. The ferry from Naxos and Amorgos runs six days out of the week, so it’s probably going to be your best choice if your schedule is more relaxed. When visiting the island of Iraklia, here’s what you can do:

Hang Out at a Beach

The island of Iraklia is home to a few beaches you’ll want to spend time at when you want to unwind. Near the port of Iraklia, you will find Port Beach. The shore of the beach is sandy and the water is clear. Some areas of the shore can be rocky, so watch your step! Thanks to its close proximity to the port, you will find taverns in the area when you want a bite to eat.

Another beach you’ll find on the island is Livadi Beach, which is the most well-known beaches. Livadi Beach is on the eastern side of the island. It is a clean and safe beach for swimming and spending time at. Just be aware that it can get windy at times, mainly in the afternoon. Agios Georgios Beach is located on the northern side of the island of Iraklia. It’s within walking distance of the port so you’ll have access the taverns and Port Beach. Trees provide natural shade at Agios Georgios Beach.

Visit the Cave of Saint John

The Cave of Saint John can be reached by following a hiking path from Panagia Village. If you enjoy hiking, this is the perfect activity as the hike to the cave will take about an hour. The Cave of Saint John features both stalactite and stalagmite formations. There is also a rare stalagmitic formation called “cave milk” present. The entrance to the cave is small, but don’t let that fool you! This is one of the largest caves in the Cyclades.

Go on a Hike

The island of Iraklia is ideal for hikers. There are many trails with varying difficulties and lengths. These trails lead to amazing views of the island and surrounding water. One trail leads to the highest peak of the Island, Pappas Summit, and is a 2 km trail with signposts. This trail passes the chapel of Prophitis Ilias, which you can stop an explore. Another trail is a short 1 km route on the slope of Pappas Hill. It begins at 165 meter elevation and is moderately difficult, taking approximately 45 minutes.
