Meganisi, Greece is a small island that is located between the western coasts of the Greek mainland and Lefkada. Meganisi is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for a laid back vacation. The geography of Meganisi Island is quite mountainous. There is a lot of greenery and the surrounding water is lovely and clean. The three villages of the island are: Vathi, Spartochori, and Katomeri. Vathi is the port and the capital of the island. Here’s what you can do while visiting the island of Meganisi in Greece.

Relax on the Beach

The beaches of Meganisi Island are surrounded by greenery and crystal water. They don’t get crowded so you won’t have to worry about noise or interrupted relaxation. Mikro Limonari Beach is just 2 km south of Katomeri Village. This beach is actually a cove that features blue green water and a beautiful surrounding landscape. The beach is unorganized and there are no facilities available.

Barbarezou Beach, also known as Cape Akoni, is located on the eastern side of the island just 5 km from Katomeri. The beach is secluded and one of the least frequented beaches on the island of Meganisi. Other beaches on the island of Meganisi include: Agios Ioannis, Spilia, Fanari, and Herniadea.

Enjoy the Food and Drink of Meganisi

Meganisi might be a small island, but you will find a some places to enjoy a good meal and drink. Some of the local products of the island include wine, olives, ouzo, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Honey and almonds are also produced and used on the island of Meganisi. Products made of sheep and goat milk are popular as well. Restaurants on the island range from tavernas by the sea to hotel restaurants, which will give you a chance to taste the traditional cuisine here.

Marinata is located in Vathy and offers outdoor seating where you can gaze out at the water and landscape as you enjoy a delicious meal. You will find a few bars around the island as well. There are beach bars and cocktail bars. If you’re craving a coffee or a sweet treat, you will find a number of cafés on the island of Meganisi.

Visit the Papanikolis Sea Cave

Located in Vathy, the Papanikolis Sea Cave is named for the Greek submarine that found shelter there during World War II. In fact, the cave gained its notoriety during the war because it was able to hide the submarine Papanikolis. It’s a very large cave with many caves located within it. It is the second largest cave in Greece. You can visit the Papanikolis Sea Cave by taking a tour boat. The island of Meganisi might be small, but it’s the perfect place for anyone who loves natures, a laid back vacation, and good food.
