Sikinos, Greece is an island that is known for its friendly people and genuine hospitality. The island of Sikinos is located between Folegrandros and Ios. Sikinos is one of the least populated of all the Greek islands. There are only about 230 permanent residents on the island. Sikinos is the perfect island to visit if you’re looking for a peaceful vacation. Here’s what you can do when spending time in Sikinos, Greece.

Visit Monasteries and Churches While in Sikinos

Sikinos, Greece is home to a few monasteries and churches. The Monastery of Episkopi is an important monument of Sikinos. It was build in the 3rd century as a Roman burial monument. It would become the Temple of Apollo Pythius and then converted into the Orthodox Christian church that is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. The monastery is surrounded ancient ruins, Byzantine chapels, and fragments of marble sculptures.

If you enjoy hiking, there is a trail that leads from Chora to the monastery. The hike takes about one hour. While visiting Sikinos, you can also see the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi, the Church of Panagia Pantanassa, and the Church of Panagia Pantohara.

Enjoy the Local Food and Drink of Sikinos

Sikinos, Greece has wonderful tastes for you to explore while you’re visiting. Local products of the island include honey. The residents of Sikinos Island are known for collecting and preserving honey in its pure form. Pasteli is a sweet sesame seed that is baked in honey. The island of Sikinos is also known for its wines. The history of wine on the island dates back to ancient times.

You will also want to try the stuffed lamb, baked rabbit with potatoes, and Greek salad with local capers. You will find places to get coffee and pastries around the island as well. If you’re a seafood lover, you might want to check out Almyra in Agios Georgios. You can also find cocktails, especially if you are in Chora.

Visit the Beaches of Sikinos

If you’re visiting Sikinos Island for a relaxing vacation, you’re going to want to spend time at the beaches. Most of the beaches on the island are secluded and quiet. Port Beach is just 4 km from Chora, within walking distance of the port. Port beach is organized and there are some beach bars on site. Dialiskari Beach is a small cove also located 4 km from Chora. The beach features white sand, blue water, and trees for natural shade. Other beaches you can visit include Malta, Agios Georgios, Livadi, and Satorineika.

Hike Around the Island of Sikinos

Sikinos is a wonderful place to walk and hike. The northern side of the island is quite beautiful to walk as it is like a large garden full of rare wild flowers. Toward the center of the island the landscape becomes more mountainous, which provides great views of Sikinos and the surrounding water and island. There is a beautiful hiking trail that goes from the Monastery of Episkopi to the Chapel of Agia Marina. Hiking trails around the island of Sikinos range in difficulty from easy to difficult.

Sikinos is a beautiful island for relaxation and exploration.
