Visit Zagori: Vikos Gorge Awaits Hikers

Written by in , Comments Off on Visit Zagori: Vikos Gorge Awaits Hikers

If you are an experienced hiker who is looking for a new challenge while visiting Greece, we have just the test for you.

In the Pindus Mountains of northern Greece, located on the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi, lies Vikos Gorge, the deepest VikosGorgegorge in the world at over 1,600 feet deep in some areas. If it’s thrills that you seek, hiking Vikos Gorge should be somewhere near the top of your to-do list while in Greece.

However, it should be noted that a journey into Vikos Gorge is not a walk in the park. Well…technically it is, I guess, as it’s part of the Greek National Park System. But it should not be taken lightly. In order to get to the beginning of the gorge, it’s going to take a walk of 4-5 hours. The travel time (on foot, obviously) throughout the entire gorge is about ten miles. Do not — I repeat, do not — attempt this journey without the necessary preparation beforehand.

You will need to bring hiking gear, supplies and the most important thing that you’ll need to bring with you — experience! This is not the trek that beginners should use to gain experience. In its entirety, the hike is physically demanding, and should be considered dangerous to first-timers who choose to explore it independently.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have much experience, and hiking Vikos Gorge is still really something that you’d be interested in doing while in Greece. Your best bet is to partake in an organized expedition of the gorge, and there are a handful of them organized by the Robinson Travel Agency, which is located in Ioannina on the main road heading towards Ioannina National Airport.

If you’re an experienced hiker, but you still want to join an organized expedition, we would most certainly suggest the Mountain Climbing Association of Ioannina or the Mountain Climbing Association of Papingo. Safety first, and enjoy the view!
