There are so many islands in Greece to see it can be hard to choose. Instead of spend time at some of the more popular touristed islands, there are plenty of others that are worth a visit. Lesvos is one of those islands. Here’s a look at some of the attractions you can spend time at while here:

Ancient Town of Mythimna

The Ancient Town of Mythimna was a powerful ancient city of the island of Lesvos. The town is located on a peninsula of the northern coast of the island. Excavations at the site of the Ancient Town of Lesvos have found remnants of an old settlement, which is very similar to the modern traditional settlement. The Ancient Town of Mythimna is surrounded by olive groves.

During the middle ages, Mythimna became known as Molyvos (or Molivos). Mythimna owns an archaeological collection with the findings from the areas as well as a collection of over ten thousand volumes of manuscripts. Music played a large role in the Ancient Town of Mithimna. Each year, there are many cultural events and conferences held in Molyvos.

Petrified Forest of Lesvos

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos was formed 20 millions years ago when a volcano erupted in the northern part of Lesvos. The entire area was covered with lava and ash. Some of the trees that were covered are up to 20 meters long and 3 meters around. The root systems of these trees are visible. The Petrified Forest extends to the sea. In fact, if you explore the beaches of Sigri, you are likely to find petrified wood mixed in with the pebbles and sand.

If you are in the villages of Zithra, Antissa, Xidira, or Vatousa, you will be able to see the caldera of the volcano, which occupies each village. There are also mounds of ash that are still visible. As you explore the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, you will see giant trees and small ones, in different shapes and positions. If you travel with kids, look for the swings where they can enjoy some time. This is the largest petrified forest in the world.

Castle of Sigri

Built in 1757, the Castle of Sigri was built by the Ottomans. The castle was built in order to protect the harbor of Sigri from pirate invasions. Protection of the harbor was important as it was one of the most important harbors of trade transportation during those times.

The main walls of the Castle of Sigri are on the edge of the Bay of Sigri. You can explore the layout of the castle and experience the same view of Sigri and the harbor that the warriors once did. The Castle of Sigri is the perfect addition to a day visiting the Petrified Forest.

Waterfalls of Man’ Katsa

The Waterfalls of Man’ Katsa is a natural beauty that must be seen while visiting Lesvos, Greece. Located 30 km north of Mytilini on the way to Mantamados, the Waterfalls of Man’ are 12 meters high with a 1 – 1.5 meter deep pit. There are large, dark rocks that are 15 – 20 meters high. The landscape of the are is tranquil and ready for exploration. If you enjoy hiking, this is the ideal destination for an afternoon.

Archaeological Museum of Mytilini

Located in a traditional mansion near the harbor of Mytilini you will find the Archaeological Museum of Mytilini. Items include tombstones, coins, jewelry, marble temples, and more. A headless female statue from the Roman period and a reconstructed fountain from the Turkish occupation are items you won’t want to miss.

Theophilos Museum

The Theophilos Museum is found 4 km from the town of Mytilini. The museum features paintings of famous local folklore artists Theofilos Hatzimihael. The artist was born in and spent his childhood years in Varia, a suburb of Mytilini. The museums has five halls and showcases 86 works by the painter. Though a wonderful painter, Hatzimihael spent much of his life in poverty and would paint walls of buildings for food. Still today, some of his work can still be seen. If you’re an art-lover, you’ll want to visit the Theophilos Museum.

Olive Museum of Archipelago

This museum was one of the first steam-powered factories of the Aegean. Built by Nicholas Vranas in 1887, the museum is located in the village of Papados. Varnas is the grandfather of poet Odysseas Elytis. The factory operated until the early 1970s. In 1999, the building became the property of a non-profit organization and it was converted into a museum.

Barbayiannis Ouzo Museum

Located in the village of Plomari, the Barbayiannis Ouzo Museum functions as a distillery to showcase the 150-year old tradition of producing ouzo. Ouzo is a traditional alcoholic beverage of Lesvos. The Barbayiannis family has produced Greek ouzo for five generations. They are passionate about preserving the traditional distillation techniques. In the museum you will see original equipment used to bottle and label the Ouzo Barbayianni Blue, and the first alembic (constructed in 1858 in Constantinople), which was used to compose recipes. The museum has a visitor’s center and gift shop. Wine-tasting tours are also available.

Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum is housed in the renovated Old Port Authority of Mytilene. The museum features items that are related to the culture and history of Lesvos, Greece. You will see things such as every day objects, clay vessels, rare books, manuscripts, and traditional costumes.

On Sigri Beach there is a kite surf center where there is equipment for rent and a surfbar where you can get snacks and drinks. There are also sun beds for rent. If you’ve never been kite surfing before, you can take a lesson here either as a group or individually. In addition to kite surfing equipment, you can also rent bikes or stand-up paddle boards.

There are a lot of things to do when you visit a gorgeous Greek island. On the island of Lesvos, you can spend time at the beach, enjoy the cuisine, and see some of the top sites. It is also home to monasteries and churches that visitors to the the beautiful Greek island will want to see. Here’s some information about this:

Monastery of Limonos

The Monastery of Limonos is the largest monastery on the island of Lesvos. It is located 4 km northwest of Kalloni Village. The Monastery of Limonos was established during the Byzantine times and was in operation until the Ottomans conquered Lesvos in 1462. Around 1526, the monastery was re-established and a main church was built. A school was also built and was in operation until 1923. The Monastery of Limonos is home to a library that houses 5,000 books, some of which date from the 15th century all the way to present day. There are rare manuscripts, holy icons, ecclesiastical items, and more.

Glykfylousa Panagia Church

Glykfylousa Panagia, or Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss, Church is located on a large rock in the center of the town of Petra. The top of the rock can be reached by climbing 114 steps that are carved into the stone. From Glykfylousa Panagia Church you will have a wonderful view of the town of Petra, the sea, and the surrounding countryside. In fact, the view extends to the coast of Asia Minor. The first church was built in 1609 and the one that stands there today was built in 1747. Below the rock is a small church called Agios Nikolaos. Inside this little church you can admire 16th century wall paintings.

Agios Raphael Monastery

Agios Raphael Monastery is located close to the village of Thermi, 15 km from Mytilene Town. This monastery is an important place of pilgrimage on the island of Lesvos. The monastery is close to the spot where monk Raphael is thought to have suffered by the Turks during the 15th century in an attempt to make him deny his Christian faith and become a Muslim. During the start of the 20th century, residents of Thermi began seeing the specter of a monk carrying a censer on a hill above the village.

These visions would also appear in another small chapel where Easter Tuesday was celebrated. During work at a small church of Agios Raphael Monastery in 1959, workers found a grave that contained a human skeleton and smelled of a sweet fragrance. Also found were Byzantine-era ceramic tile and ecclesiastical marbles. Other excavations uncovered the graves of martyrs as well as holy relics. The Agios Raphael Monastery that stands today was built in 1963 on the ruins of older monasteries. The skull of Agios Raphael is kept at the monastery.

Ypsilou Monastery

Ypsilou Monastery was built in 1101 on the crater of a dormant volcano. From this monastery you will have an impressive view of the coast of Asia Minor and the western side of the island of Lesvos. Photography is not allowed at this monastery, but it is still an attraction you won’t want to pass by. Inside, there are bible covers from 1588 and gold embroidered stoles. You can visit the nearby petrified forest when you’re in the area.

Lesvos has no shortage of things to do. You should consider visiting at least one of these monasteries while on the island, though!
