Halkidiki, Greece is a region that is known for its three jutting peninsulas known as the “Three Fingers.” These peninsulas are: Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos. Each of the “fingers” is unique and has something different to offer. Halkidiki is considered one of the most exotic areas in Greece.

The seashores are sandy and the waters are varying shades of turquoise. Caves, steep cliffs, the scent of fresh pines from the pine forests, and the mountains all make Halkidiki an amazing place to visit. In addition to the natural beauty, Halkidiki offers archaeological sites, castles, museums, and much more. When visiting the region of Halkidiki, you will want to experience some of these attractions.

Tower of Prosforio

The Tower of Prosforio is the largest and most well-preserved tower in Halkidiki. The tower was built by monks who belonged to the Vatopedi Abbey in Mount Athos. It was constructed to protect the area from invasions during the 14th century. Features of the Tower of Prosforio include a bottom that is Byzantine architecture while second and third levels are Ottoman. The interior of the tower is constructed with wood from the 19th century. The tower has undergone a number of restorations over the years.

Lighthouse of Poseidi

Built in 1864, the Lighthouse of Poseidi is located at the end of Poseidi Beach. The lighthouse is colonial style and is still in working order today. Pine trees surrounding it and a small garden of flowers beside it, add to the beauty of this whitewashed lighthouse. In the early days of the lighthouse, the seawater would come very close, but over the years it has gradually backed away and sand has piled up in front of the lighthouse. If you’re spending time at Poseidi Beach, you will want to visit the lighthouse.

Cave of Petralona

Located near the village of Nea Moudania, the Cave of Petralona was discovered in 1959. It would undergo systematic excavations for a few years that revealed chambers and corridors as well we rock formations that resembled columns, cactus, and curtains. There are also water ponds, stalactites, and stalagmites. Maybe the most exciting finds were the Paleolithic tools, fossilized animals, and the cranium of a primitive man. The Cave of Petralona is open to visitors, so you won’t want to pass up on a chance to see this amazing site.

Waterfalls of Varvara

In a forest full of alders, lindens, beeches, and wild hazels, you will find two breathtaking waterfalls called the Waterfalls of Varvara. This attraction is ideal for families as you can get there by car and the area is not only beautiful, but serene as well. When you arrive, you will be able to see the waterfalls that flow into a ravine. The water from the waterfall leads to the Movrolaka River, which is the boundary between Varvara and Olympiada. A 5 – 10 minute walk will find you at the waterfalls There are wooden bridges and clearly marked paths. The whole family will enjoy this experience.

While visiting Halkidiki, you should consider enjoying some of these attractions!

Thanks to financing from the Anthropological Society of Greece, the Anthropological Museum of Petralona, which is located in Halkidiki, Greece first welcomed guests in 1979. Conceived as a showcase for objects discovered in the nearby Petralona cave, the museum celebrates Greece’s palaeoanthropological record. It’s filled with a trove of artifacts, in addition to murals of prehistoric scenes and recreations of important archeological sites.

What To Do at the Anthropological Museum of Petralona

Standout exhibits at the Anthropological Museum of Petralona include a replica of the Archanthropus europeus petralonsiensis mausoleum, in addition to the oldest known traces of fire from over a million years ago! Stone and bone tools dating back 11 million years and fossilized animals from the Mesozoic era are also on display.

Several large-scale paintings by folk artist Christos Kagaras brighten up the gallery space. One depicts an early Homininae teaching children how to make tools. Another illustrates Aristotle’s theory on the evolution of life.

In addition to the museum, guests can also sign up for tours of the famous Petralona cave, also known as the Cave of the Red Stones. A hiker named Philippos Chatzaridis discovered the natural grotto in 1959 after erosion exposed it. The following year a villager named Christos Sariannidis stumbled upon a fossilized skull in the cave’s stalagmite. Scientists believe the prehistoric cranium is over 700,000 years old and once belonged to a primate genus unrelated to Homo erectus that lost the evolutionary race.

When you’re done exploring Petralona and its archeological jewels, carve out a few hours to catch some rays on one of the nearby Halkidiki beaches, where soft golden sands give way to crystalline blue waters.

Getting to the Anthropological Museum of Petralona

The Anthropological Museum of Petralona is about two kilometers outside the village center, and visitors can get there several ways. In terms of public transportation, a daily bus shuttles between Thessaloniki and Petralona. Travel time is about one hour. A taxi to the museum from Thessaloniki typically costs over 50 euros. If you want to engage a cab to stay for two hours while you explore the space, your final bill could easily be upwards of 200 euros.

Another option is booking a tour through an area hotel. Since they’re group excursions, the price is usually more reasonable than a cab. The last alternative is renting a car. If you choose this route, make sure to have the proper insurance and driving credentials.

The Anthropological Museum of Petralona is a must-see site for anyone interested in prehistoric humans and the Earth’s geological footprint. But don’t forget to wear comfortable and safe shoes! You’ll appreciate the firm footing when cave-side.

]]>
If you are visiting Mount Athos, you might want to consider taking a day trip to the island of Thassos, which is the home to a beautiful place called Arsanas Beach. This is a beautiful, semi-secluded spot, and it offers you a great way to relax in the sun while in the area. Here’s more information about the beach:

About Arsanas Beach

Like many of the beaches in Greece, Arsanas is blessed with glistening white sands that give way to aqua-marine waters. But the stretch of sand wasn’t always a public beach. In a past life, the Arsanas cape served as a boatyard for the Monastery of Archangel Michael.

At 60 meters long and 25 meters deep, Arsanas isn’t a large beach. The fact that you need to walk down a 100-meter path to get to the beach is also something that is interesting. It gives the feeling that the beach is somewhat secluded, while also being very accessible. The steep path, however, may be difficult to access if you have trouble moving. The beach is also semi-pebbled, so be sure to bring the right footwear.

Also keep in mind that if true seclusion is what you want, this isn’t a good beach for that. It can actually get pretty crowded, especially during peak tourist season. It is a physically gorgeous spot, and this attracts locals and tourists alike. But even during these busy times, it’s still a tranquil spot to relax and rejuvenate. Sometimes, you may just be a bit close to your sunbathing neighbor.

Arsanas is a truly beautiful spot. Wreathed with emerald green shrubbery and sculptural rocky outcrops that lend a cinematic touch. So, before you go, be sure to charge your phone. You’ll definitely want to take a lot of pics of this pretty spot!

What to Do at Arsanas Beach

Since Arsanas Beach isn’t large, water sports, volleyball, and other games aren’t on tap — but beach chairs can be rented for a very reasonable price. Resultantly, patrons tend to skew a bit older and calmer. If your idea of the perfect day is diving into a good book while lounging oceanside, then Arsanas may be just what the doctor ordered.

And when you start feeling hungry, pull up to a table at the delicious taverna a few steps away from the sand.

Getting to Arsanas Beach

Getting to Arsanas Beach isn’t a snap. You have three options: walking, swimming, or boating. If you choose to walk, you’ll need to either rent a car or take a taxi to the top of the dirt path that leads down to the beach. On crowded days, finding a parking spot alongside the road can be challenging.

Swimming in from a nearby beach is doable — but should only be attempted by trained long-distance, open-water swimmers. The third option is to take a boat directly to the beach. There are group charters for which you can buy a ticket, and the well-heeled can rent private boats for the day that come with full crews.

If you want to spend a few hours on a gorgeous beach with waters that sparkle like a blanket made of Tanzanite, check out Arsanas Beach on the island of Thassos, which is accessible from Athos, Greece.
