Halkidiki is a peninsula region in northern Greece that is known for having three peninsulas extending from it. Halkidiki is known for its beaches of golden sand and blue-green water. The region has much to offer from coastal villages, cosmopolitan villages, and plenty of nature. Halkidiki also has options if you’re looking for nightlife, traditional food, and religious sites. There are a number of ways to get to Halkidiki.

There isn’t an airport, but the nearest one is located in Thessaloniki 16 km away. Busses to Halkidiki are found next to the airport. Cars are also available to rent. Visiting Halkidiki, you won’t find any shortage of things to do whether you’re traveling on your own, as a couple, or as a family with children.

Here are several interesting things to do while visiting Halkidiki:

Lounge on the Beach

Halkidiki is home to many beautiful beaches. Popular beaches include Vourvourou Beach, Akti Elias Beach, and Kavuorotripes. Akti Elias is a sandy beach located in the northwestern area of Sithonia. Kavuorotripes Beach, also known as Portokali or Orange Beach, is also in Sithonia. Kassandra peninsula is well-known for its popular beaches including: Hanioti, Sani, and Kallithea. Enjoy an afternoon or an entire day lounging on the beach and swimming in the beautiful water. Beaches also offer a wonderful view of the sunset.

Visit a Museum

If you’re a history-lover, you will enjoy the museums that Halkidiki has to offer. The Anthropological Museum of Petralona is one you won’t want to miss. You’ll see findings from the Cave of Petralona including fossils and tools. The museum focuses on providing insight into the prehistoric culture of Greece. Other museums in the region include: the Archaelogical Museum of Poligros, the Folklore Museum of Afitos, and the Historical Museum of Arnaia.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Aside from spending time on the beaches of Halkidiki, you can enjoy the outdoors in a number of ways. Scuba diving is available in various areas throughout the region as well as other water sports such as sailing and windsurfing. Hiking in Halkidiki is an outdoor activity that will allow you to discover areas you might not otherwise see. Trails can be found throughout Halkidiki at varying levels of difficulty.

Explore Landmarks

Halkidiki, along with the rest of Greece, is rich in history. This history has resulted in landmarks you can’t see anywhere else. Important landmarks in Halkidiki include the Byzantine Tower of Ouranoupolis, the Temple of Ammon Zeus, and Likithos Castle. Poseidon Temple sits in a location that allows for an amazing view. You won’t want to miss the view of Mount Athos. While you can’t visit it, unless you’re male and in possession of special permission, the monasteries and landscape surrounding them are unique and beautiful.

Halkidiki has plenty of activities, sites, and beaches for adults and families. Whether you’re into cosmopolitan areas or looking for peace and quiet, you’ll find something that suits your needs. When you’re not sightseeing, you’ll have your choice of places to eat, relax, and shop.
