view of beautiful Ermoupoli townSyros is one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades, but it is rich in history and culture. It is also an important hub of activity for ferries in the area and at one time, Syros was one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea. The capital city is fairly populated, but the rest of the island is fairly rural. This means that this is a relatively friendly island for people to visit because it is more than possible to find things to do in the city’s capital while also finding places to relax. This is also one of those places that has signs of life outside of peak tourist season, so if you want to visit in some of the off months, you’ll find that the island is very much alive year round. Here are some things you can do while visiting Syros:

Ermoupolis City Hall

While typical city hall buildings are not usually interesting enough to visit, the Ermoupolis City Hall far exceeds expectations. This historic place is definitely worth your time! Not only is it gorgeous to look at, but it offers some great views of the surrounding area. The city itself was founded during the Greek War for Independence and this building dates from around that time.

Saint Nicholas Church

Greece has a lot of Greek Orthodox Churches and each one has its own unique characteristics. The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is one of the prettiest on the island and it is definitely something you should see while you’re here. Come here to view the gorgeous religious icons, pristine art, and to catch a glimpse of the beautiful architecture. As an added bonus, this church is also air conditioned.

Apollon Theater

The Apollon Theater is a clean, modern venue that regularly shows world class performers. Whether you love the theater or you enjoy listening to music, there is something here for you! During your stay, peruse the list of performances and buy tickets so that you can enjoy this site firsthand. If you know that you definitely want to take in a performance, consider buying tickets before you even arrive on Syros so that you can be sure to reserve a seat.

Syros Beaches

Syros has plenty of beaches, which means that there is something here for everyone. Whether you want to participate in water sports such as windsurfing or snorkeling, soak up the sun, swim in the gorgeous waters, or spend some time eating and drinking in a cafe right on the sea, there is something here for everyone. There are also some great, family friendly beaches here, too. Top beaches include Galissas Beach, Agathopes Beach, and Delfni Beach. If you spend a lot of time on the island, you can even visit a new beach each day!

On the one hand, Syros is a typical Greek island since there are plenty of opportunities to soak up the sun, enjoy the nightlife, and eat delicious Greek food. However, there are plenty of other things to do here, as well!

Syros is an island in the Cyclades group in the AegeanSea. The largest towns on the island are Ermoupoli, Ano Syros, and Vari. Ermoupoli is the capital of the island and the capital of the Cyclades. Syros is on the same ferry route as the islands of Mykonos and Tinos, so there are a lot of ferries that travel there even during the off-season. Restaurants on the island of Syros are top quality for a reasonable price. The island is home to a beautiful town hall designed by Ernst Ziller, archaeological sites, and a number of important monasteries.

When you’re in Syros, you will want to take in the museums. The island of Syros is full of history ready to be explored.

The Archaeological Museum of Syros

Housed in the Town Hall of Ermoupoli, the Archaeological Museum of Syros showcases objects found throughout the Cyclades. The museum was founded in 1834, making it one of the oldest museums in Greece. Four rooms display exhibits featuring items such as a 35 cm marble statuette of a female figure and other figures, a compass, utensils, weapons, tools, ceramics, sculptures, inscriptions, and other artifacts.

The Town Hall itself was built in 1876 (the museum moved into the building in 1899). It’s a unique building that was inspired by three different architectural styles. The first floor is Tuscan style, the second floor is Ionic style, and the towers are Corinthian. If you visit the Archaeological Museum, take time to explore the Town Hall as well.

The Museum of the Municipality of Ano Syros

The Museum of the Municipality of Ano Syros is located in the heart of the town. The museum is an exhibition og traditional professions including that of a barber, a tailor, a fisherman, a cobbler, and a carpenter. Objects and tools of the professsions are showcased. Also for viewing at the museum are household accessories, instruments, letters, historical documents, and other antique objects. This museum will give you an in depth view into the history of the island.

The Industrial Museum of Syros

Housed in 4 19th century buildings, the Industrial Museum of Syros was founded in 2000 in Ermoupoli. The Museum is also refered to as the Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli. The 4 buildings include: the Skagiopoieio Anairoysi, the Kornilaki Tannery, the Katsimanti Paint Factory, and the Velissaropoulou weaving mill. The museum showcases equipment and machinery, a collection of tools, textiles, digital audio, glass workshops, maps, artifacts from the Patrice steamship wreck, and much more. One of the most exciting exhibits is the first electric car, the Enfield 8000, that was constructed in Greece.

The Museum of Markos Vamvakaris

Markos Vamvakaris was a well-known and wonderful rebetiko singer, musician, and composer. He was born in Ano Syros where the museum is located. The museum is dedicated to his life and includes photographs and personal items. Anyone with a love for music and getting to know the people behind it will enjoy this experience.

The museums of Syros will transport you back in time and are definitely worth visiting!

Syros is one of those whitewashed islands in the Cyclades of Greece that visitors seem to flock to. While it’s neighbors, Santorini and Mykonos, tend to be a little bit more popular, Syros still has a healthy throng of people who come here each year. Many visitors come here to enjoy the beach and gorgeous weather. However, there is a bit more to it than that. Syros is a place where the past and present seem to converge, and the villages on the island can give people both experiences. Here’s a look at some of the best villages to visit on Syros:

Ermoupolis

If you have time to visit only one village, you should make Ermoupolis the highest priority. More of a town than a village, the island’s capital is a hub of activity that won’t disappoint. The town has an interesting history since it was founded by refugees who came from islands like Chios, Crete, and Kassos. As a result of these refugeess, Ermoupolis has a vibrant, modern feel to it while still maintaining its traditional roots. As the capital, it is also worth it to consider booking your lodging here since it is centrally located and near several area attractions. The town itself is named after Hermes, the messenger god.

Ano Syros

Ano Syros, on the surface, seems like a part of Ermoupolis since it is an easy walking distance. However, it does have a distinct flavor all its own. It had its start around 1200 A.D. and has a distinctly older feel than the rest of the area. Initially, this was considered to be the “Catholic” portion of Ermoupolis with the larger town being where the Orthodox Christians traditionally lived. Although this isn’t necessarily the case any longer, people do still consider Ano Syros to be the “Catholic” side.

Kini

Kini is one of those villages that is a great driving distance from the main capital on the island, which means that it makes for a worthwhile day trip. It is only nine kilometers from Ermoupolis and it is also very close to Galissas, one of the smaller villages on Syros. Kini is known for its beauty and charm and is located right on the water. As a result of this, there are plenty of resorts here that visitors love to spend time at. Kini is also known for its great cuisine and they are known for their seafood. If you don’t want to stay in a larger town, Kini is a great place to reserve a room since there are so many resorts to choose from.

Galissas

Galissas, as mentioned above, is close to Kini. It is also about a nine kilometer drive from Ermoupolis. Like Kini, Galissas is also small and does have some resorts. It is also known for its beaches and people love to spend time here to soak up the sun and eat some wonderful Greek food. You could easily spend a lot of time here, especially if you are staying in a resort in Kini.

You won’t want to miss the chance to visit these villages while on Syros!

The Greek island of Syros is one of those that perfectly merges modern life with nods to Greece’s ancient past. A small island located in the Cycladic island group, Syros is a beautiful island that is rick in culture and history. Come here when you want a place to relax and see the sites without the crushing tourist crowds.

One of the things that the island is most known for is the fact that the island is filled with traditional villages, and many visitors sense that most of these places have a deep history. Ermoupoli, which is possibly one of the most intriguing villages on Syros, is one of these places. Here’s a look at what to do while visiting Ermoupoli:

Platia Miaouli

In many Greek villages, the square is where life appears to revolve and Platia Miaouli is no exception. Designed by Ernst Ziller, the renowned architect from Saxony, which is now a part of Germany, this square is a fine example of what an urban square should look like. The area has cafes and shops and is an excellent location for strolling and people watching. The town hall is also located here, and the Ermoupoli’s small archaeological museum is located in the town hall. Even if you don’t spend that much time at this square, you’ll want to at least walk through so that you can see what it looks like.

Vaporia District

One thing that Syros is known for, particularly in Ermoupoli, is the fact that there is some wealth here. Those who are wealthy usually made money from from the shipping trade and the buildings located throughout the district often display this wealth. Nowhere is this more evident than at Agios Nicolaos, a Greek Orthodox Church. However, there are also plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes here to spend time at even if you are unable to visit the church.

Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos, a Greek Orthodox Christian Church, is one of the most recognizable buildings in Ermoupoli because of its distinct, blue dome and the church’s twin spires. Although the outside does look impressive, it’s the inside of the church that is the most memorable. It’s packed with murals, icons, and artifacts and is a fine example of how the wealthier Greeks often chose to spend their money. This church is located in the Vaporia District.

Apollo Theater

Sure, many theaters in Greece have ancient roots. However, the Apollo Theater isn’t one of those places. Built in the mid 1800’s, this theater is relatively new to the scene compared to other theaters in Greece. There are still plenty of performances that took place here, too, so you can have the pleasure of seeing this theater during a show.

Ermoupoli is enchanting and the first thing you notice while visiting here is how unique the place really is. Perched on the edge of the sea, Ermoupoli is one of those places that seems stately. Because of the wealth generated from the shipping industry, Ermoupoli lives up to this reputation.

About Vaporia Quarter

Vaporia Quarter is a beautiful square in Ermoupolis, Syros. Vaporia means “ship” in Greek, which describes the area well. Vaporia is a charming neighborhood that sits around the port of Ermoupolis. This used to be an important trading quarter during the 19th century. Much of the trading that was done on the island at the time, was done within the shops and products would then be loaded onto ships to be exported. The richest people of the island of Syros lived in Vaporia.

During the revolution, refugees from Crete and the northern Aegean settled on the island of Syros. They built high-ceiling mansions. The mansions were created with woodcut doors and wooden floors. These mansions that also featured wall paintings and frescoes were usually found close to the port and belonged to rich ship owners as well as captains. The mansions have been renovated, but extreme care was taken to retain their original architectural beauty. Some of the mansions now act as guest houses and hotels.

The buildings around Vaporia were built attached to each other. They are of different colors and feature carved marble balconies. Of the buildings also feature frescoes or wall paintings that decorate the walls and ceilings.
