Amorgos island landscapeWhen asked to describe the island of Amorgos, most people who’ve been conjure up a single adjective – dramatic. No matter what you’re doing, it’s all too easy to get swept up by the stunning scenery. However, that’s not all there is to do on this island – Amorgos is also a place to experience the Greek culture at its finest. Here’s an overview of what to do while on on this island:

Go to the Beach

Like many places in Greece, the beaches are one of the main attractions. Amorgos is no exception. While the island may be fairly small, it also doesn’t lack for beach experiences. In fact, in a country filled with amazing beaches, Mourou Beach does standout as being one of the best. People describe the beach as having beautiful, clear water that remains warm no matter what time of year it is. People enjoy swimming, relaxing, and gazing at the stunning nearby scenery while here. If you want to avoid the tourist crowds, however, you’ll want to visit slightly off peak. The months of September and October, for example, are still warm but the tourist crowds are considerably less than they were in June, July and August.

Go Diving

Sure, you can always sit on the beach and enjoy gazing at the water and the surrounding water. However, the real enchantment of the waters lies underwater – and this is a world you can only see if you go diving. Like many coastal locations in Greece, there is an active tradition of diving on Amorgos. If you would like to explore this other world, visit the Amorgos Diving Center to review all your options. If you want to have an amazing diving experience, this is the place to go! If you don’t have experience, you can also take classes and join a dive group so that you can have a safe and pleasurable dive.

Visit a Monestary

Like many places throughout Greece, Amorgos has an active monastery that guests can visit. The Monastery of Panagia Hozovitissa is one of the island’s chief destinations for travelers. However, before you step foot in the monastery, there are some things to keep in mind. First of all, monasteries are formal places, so proper attire and behavior are necessary. Overall, the people are welcoming as long as you’re not disrespectful. You can also get some exercise here thanks to the massive staircase you’ll need to climb to get to the monastery.

Enjoy the Mountains

The mountains are an important part of the dramatic landscape here, and in order to truly appreciate them, you need to spend some time in them! The island is filled with a network of footpaths that actually were the original roads. You can picture the island’s inhabitants walking or riding their donkeys from one village to the next. Once you see one of these paths, it’s fun to spend some time walking on them, just to see where they go. If you aren’t a fan of hiking, you can certainly appreciate the mountains from a distance. Whenever you see something that catches your fancy, be sure to take plenty of pictures!

The island of Amorgos is truly unique and will be an excellent destination for your vacation.

Beautiful old traditional Aigiali village in Amorgos island, Cyclades, GreeceAmorgos is a small island that is located in the Cyclades but where it lacks size, it certainly makes up for in sheer, dramatic beauty! Although it is only 30 kilometers in length, the mountains can reach around 800 meters high, which is over 2600 feet. In fact, as you approach the island, the mountains are the first things that you’ll notice and much of your time on the island will be spent traversing through these dramatic hills, or at least gazing at them.

Rather than detract from the beaches, however, this only makes the coast even more stunning. Here is a list of some of the best beaches to visit during your stay here:

Agia Anna Beach

This beach is located just 3 kilometers away from the main town of Chora. It is also considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island! It is also within walking distance to the Panagia Hozoviotissa monastery, which means that you can easily spend the day lounging in the sun or exploring the monastery (during its opening hours, of course!) There are no sun beds here to rent and the beach is rocky, so if you want to sit here, you’ll need to bring your own chairs. It’s also a great beach for scuba diving and snorkeling because the underwater views are just as incredible as the ones above the water!

Morou Beach

In order to get to the beach itself, you’ll need to hike about five minutes down a steep hill, so it is important to wear the proper footwear, at least until you get onto the beach! The short, steep climb is well worth it, though – this is one of the prettiest beaches on the island! This is another one of those pebbled beaches, though, so you will want to make sure you keep your footwear on. The main draw here is the crystalline water and even though it takes a bit of effort to hike down, the beach gets very busy.

Levressos Beach

If you would rather skip the pebbled beaches altogether, or you simply need a break from all the pebbles, Levressos Beach is the place to be! This beach is only about 1 kilometer from the village of Aegiali but if you’re staying in Chora, you will have more of a distance to go. It’s worth the effort to get here though, especially if you’re craving soft sand and warm waters. While here, you won’t want to miss the chance to explore Aegiali either. It’s a picturesque village that has some shops, restaurants, and tavernas to pass the time in.

Vlychada Beaches

There are two beaches located close to each other in the northern part of Amorgos island – Mikri Vlychada and Megali Vlychada Beaches. There is actually no way to drive to either of the beaches and they can only be reached by boat or on foot. The trip is well worth it though – visitors will be rewarded with stunning views and crystal blue waters.

Because Amorgos is extemely mountainous, reaching some of the beaches can be a little difficult. Whether you need to hike or take a boat, however, you’ll find that it was well worth the effort!

Amorgos is one of those Greek islands that enchants people with its dramatic landscape and peaceful way of life. In many ways, it is a typical island of the Cyclades, filled with whitewashed homes and plenty of sunshine to satisfy any beachgoer. Guests can fill their days by exploring the countryside, browsing through the shops, eating in a traditional restaurant, or taking in the scenery. This is an island that’s also rich in history, and evidence of that can be found throughout Amorgos.

Another great thing to do while staying here is to find a few villages to explore. Whether you stay in your favorite village or decide to explore one of them for the day, these villages are ones you won’t want to miss:

Chora

This village is located in the direct middle of the island, which means that it is a pretty good choice for a place to stay. Located roughly 400 meters above sea level, or over 1300 feet, Chora feels as if it has an ideal location. There are many views here that are incredible and the streets are filled with charming shops and cafes. There is also a clear medieval presence here and many of the buildings show that influence, which gives Chora an interesting feel. Even if you would rather stay by the sea, Chora is still worth a visit for at least a day just to take it all in.

Thalaria

Although Thalaria isn’t as high up as Chora, it is high enough to make this village seem as if it was cut from the landscape itself. At over 180 meters high, or over 500 feet high, this village does have some views, even though they aren’t as dramatic as Chora’s. Still, this village is worth visiting because it has a charm all its own because it is near the mountains and has a great view of the sea.

Katapola

If you are looking for a seaside village to spend time in, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Katapola. This is also the main port of the island, which means that if you come here by ferry, you’ll want to give yourself time to explore even if you’re moving on to another part of the island. One of the most charming things about this village are the windmills that are scattered throughout. It is also a great place to spend some time by the water.

Arkesini

One of the greatest things about spending time at an island like Amorgos is the fact that it gives visitors a chance to glimpse traditional Greek island life. The village of Arkesini is adorable and charming and since not many tourists venture here, you have the chance to see what life is really like on the island. The people of this village raise cattle, grow their own food, and make their living as fisherman, which only adds to its charm.

While on the Greek island of Amorgos, you should spend some time at at least one of these villages.

Amorgos is a Greek island that is well-known for amazing sunsets, beautiful beaches, and charming villages. The island prides itself on keeping local traditions alive. The history of Amorgos is clear in the monasteries, archaeological sites, and other monuments. When visiting the Greek island of Amorgos, you will want to see these attractions.

Archaeological Museum of Amorgos

Housed in the Tower of Gravas in Chora, the Archaeological Museum of Amorgos showcases finds from the archaeological excavation of Amorgos. The tower dates back to the 16th century and is of Venetian architecture. Findings mainly come from the three ancient cities of Amorgos, which are: Aegiali, Minoa, and Arkesini.

The museum’s collections also include remains of the Minoan civilization that existed there over 4,000 years ago. Exhibits at the Archaeological Museum of Amorgos include a marble torso of a male statue that was found in Tholaria Aegiali, a marble female torso, ceramics, and sculptures.

Agia Triada Chapel

Just a 5 minute walk from Langada, in the northern area of Amorgos, Agia Triada Chapel is known as being the chapel that hangs on a cliff. The chapel overlooks the entire valley and the Bay of Aegiali. The chapel was built during a time when pirate attacks were common and it was used as a shelter. Visit this impressive chapel in a unique spot and enjoy the view as well. If you happen to be visiting during sunset, you’re in for a treat. A festival for Agia Triada is held 50 days after Greek Easter.

Secondary School of Amorgos

Located in Chora, the Secondary School of Amorgos was the first secondary school built in Greece after the War of Independence in 1821. This whitewashed building has a large yard and a red door. You can’t miss it while you are exploring the streets of Amorgos, Greece. The school was built in June of 1821 with the financial help of the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. The Secondary School of Amorgos is still used today.

Castle of Amorgos

The Castle of Amorgos was built by the Venetians in 1290. It was built to protect Amorgos and its residents from pirate invasions. The Castle of Amorgos is located on the Kastro (castle) rock that stands above the village of Chora. The rock is 210 feet high. The entrance of the fortress with its low gate can still be seen. The wall of the fortress has tapered openings that are wider on the inside. These openings were used to fire upon attackers. The climb to the Castle of Amorgos can be strenuous, but definitely worth it to see the view of the village and surrounding areas.

Capital of Amorgos

When visiting the island of Amorgos, you should definitely see Chora, the capital. This settlement is located at the central part of the island. The medieval settlement of Chora features stone windmills, whitewashed houses and labyrinth alleys. Loza is the central square where you will be charmed by its atmosphere. Amorgos is designated as a protected settlement.

There is so much to see when visiting Amorgos, Greece.

The island of Amorgos will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Times have not touched the island giving it a true historical feel. The island, which is part of the Cyclades group, is shaped like a seahorse. Amorgos is one of the most beautiful islands, so it’s no surprise that it’s been the location of a movie! “The Big Blue,” a movie from 1988 was set there.

Aside from the lovely beaches, amazing landscapes and views, and caves that provoke curiosity, there are a number of monasteries that are worth a visit on the island of Amorgos.

The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa

Build into the side of a cliff above the beach of Agia Anna, the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa is one of the most breathtaking historical and religious places of the Aegean. The monastery was built during the 11th century. If you don’t mind climbing the 1,000 stairs to get there, you are in for a real treat. The unique architecture of the building is something to admire, but so is the view! The monastery is 300 meters above sea level. The reason for this is because construction originally began near the ocean where the icon of Virgin Mary was found. But every morning, the workers came back and their work had been undone by mother nature. One day, a worker found his tool bag hanging on a nail on a cliff above. This was taken as a sign that it should be where the monastery was to be built.

Monastery of Agios Georgios Valsamitis

Located 3 km from Chora, this beautiful monastery is surrounded by vegetation. It is one of the first monasteries on the island to have been built in the traditional Byzantine style. The monastery was built on the site of an ancient temple that was dedicated to the god Apollo. The monastery is three-aisled and was hagiographed during different time periods. Today, the murals from the 18th century can still be seen. The monastery is connected to an old ceremony of hydro divination. Amorgos’ only nun resides at the monastery. Sister Irini actually began as a tourist coming to the island decades ago. After her husband passed away she chose this new path for her life.

Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos

This early Byzantine church is thought to have been built between the 7th and 9th century on the site of an ancient temple. The church is dedicated to John the Evangelist. The Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos is a three-aisled basilica built with limestone. The church is just one hour’s walk from Langada in the northern part of Amorgos.

The Monastery of Kyra Eleousa

The Monastery of Kyra Eleousa is the oldest church on the island, having been built during Byzantine times. It is located near the square in Chora. The church features some interesting icons of the Cretan School. One of the most notable is the icon of Panagia Glikofilousa.

There are a number of monasteries and churches in Amorgos, Greece ready to be explored.

Many consider the island of Amorgos to be one of the most beautiful islands in not only the world, but in Greece as a whole. The wild, rocky landscape meets the deep blue of the sea to form an unforgettable image of beauty. Visitors spend a considerable amount of time enjoying the natural beauty, such as sitting at one of its stunning beaches or hiking through the countryside. It is located  in the Southern Aegean Sea on the eastern edge of the Cyclades islands and is highly popular with island-hoppers, especially during peak tourist season. Here’s more information:

Getting to Amorgos

If you are traveling from Piraeus (the port of Athens), it is quite easy to find a ferry sailing to the island, and there are more options in the summer months than in the off-season. There are two ports of arrival on the island: Katapola on the south western side and Aegiali, to the north. Ferries for Katapola generally sail from Piraeus in every morning and afternoon. The high speed catamaran that takes you there is a car ferry and makes stops at the islands of Paros, Naxos and Koufonissi. If you are already in Paros or Naxos, you can easily get on the ferry there and continue on to Amorgos. You do need to take a ferry since there is no airport on the island, ut you can fly to a nearby island such as Mykonos to cut down on your time on the water.

Diving in Amorgos

The diving you can do in Amorgos is legendary. It was even featured in a movie, Big Blue. The water is crystal clear, which means that you can easily see what’s underneath. In fact, it is this amazing clarity of the Aegean waters allows for the best diving adventures anywhere. In order to begin diving, you can do so independently if you have the skills. However, it is much easier to get involved with one of the dive centers on the island. There, you can rent equipment, take a guided tour, and get some ideas as to the best places to dive.

What to See in the Waters

There are many great places to dive like Nikouria’s Cavern, Grambonissi, Deep Blue Wall or the Sparti Caves. You’ll see colorful sponges and coral as well as a huge variety of sea life like octopus, moray eels, sea Bass, barracuda, loggerhead turtles, spiral worms, tuna and dolphins. Close to Amorgos is also a famous shipwreck that you can view, that sunk in 1981. It is now an interesting  place to dive to explore the shipwreck and view the sea life that has taken up residence there.

Amorgos is a beautiful island that is certainly worth exploring above the surface. It is considered very beautiful, and no matter what you do during your stay, you’re sure to marvel at its beauty. However, it is also one of the top diving locations in Greece. You should definitely go on at least one diving excursion during your stay.

One of the main attractions and characteristics of Amorgos island is the beautiful, traditional town named Chora. The center and capital (Chora) are located close to the port by boat or 15 minutes walking distance from it. While walking around, you will enjoy its narrow streets and alleys where life flows gently. You can find a variety of amenities and traditional shops. Furthermore, you can visit its imposing mansions and houses that give the town a unique character.

About Chora Town in Amorgos

Chora Town is filled with interesting architecture that makes you feel as if you are being transported to another time. The houses are made of pebbles and stone and spread into an irregular maze of narrow streets and alleys.

From the square, where the old clock used to be, leads out to Megalochari street, the main road, which takes you on one side to the pedestrian zone of Chora and from where you can get on small streets that lead you to some traditional studios and workshops.

On the other side of the square, a narrow road leads out to Kapodistriou street; this starts with shops selling local products (cooked snacks) and continues with small bars, restaurants, and shops of souvenirs. The square is decorated with a traditional “platanus” tree and has benches to relax and enjoy the scenery.
