Mylopotas beach, Ios island, Cyclades, GreeceSun soaked beaches nestled against the hills and the crystal blue water is beckoning you to relax and enjoy life. While this sounds like it good be nearly anywhere in Greece, there’s something about Ios that feels extra special. Perhaps it’s the windmills that jut out of the hills, a reminder of how important the environment is to the people of the island. Maybe it’s the special welcome guests always receive from the locals. Mostly though, Ios has a charm all its own and because it doesn’t receive the throngs of tourists that some of the other islands do, you feel as if the place exists only for you.

Base Your Trip in Chora

Chora is the capital city of the island, which means that there are plenty of options in terms of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Many of the island’s top beaches are centered on Chora, as well. Hotels range from smaller, family owned operations, to much larger resorts. You can even find a villa rental – an option that is especially worthwhile if you’re staying on Ios for an extended period of time.

Spend Time at the Beach

Ios has some of the prettiest beaches in all of Greece and many of them are near Chora. Mylopotas Beach is just a few kilometers south of Chora and has a variety of activities for people to enjoy. Spend the day sitting in one of the lounge chairs, go windsurfing or snorkeling, or overlook the blue waters from one of the seaside bars or restaurants. Other beaches near Chora include Gialos, Kolitsani, and Koumbara. If you want to find a quiet beach, you’ll need to venture further away from the city. Manganari is about 20 km from Chora and therefore doesn’t get the crowds that the beaches closer to the city experience.

Visit the Tomb of Homer

Did you know that Homer was buried on Ios? Visiting his tomb is a definite must-see while on Ios! Paying respects to the author of the the Iliad and the Odyssey serves as a reminder of just how the Ancient Greek culture still affects Modern Greece today. Because of people like Homer, we have a better understanding of what Ancient Greece was like. Not only that, but his influence is felt in literature even today.

Eat the Local Cuisine

As is the case throughout Greece, the cuisine on Ios is distinct and flavorful and has close ties to the land. Since it’s an island, seafood constantly finds its way on restaurant menus, some of which don’t even have menus. They just assess nature’s bounty and offer their guests tasty dishes based on what’s available. Because of that, the food is extremely fresh and lovingly prepared by master chefs who grew up learning how to use the land to help them prepare nourishing foods. Restaurants that do have established menus created them based on the foods that are readily available on a constant basis.

If you like to spend some time “out on the town” your best bet is to find a bar or taverna in Ios or one of the island’s more popular beaches. Many of these establishments are also restaurants, a reminder that food and drink go hand in hand in the Greek culture.

Ios is on of those islands that strikes a nice balance between being off the beaten track and having a nice bustle of visitors during peak season. This is one of those places where if you want to find a great party somewhere, you certainly could. However, the island isn’t ruled by its party atmosphere either. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the stunning scenery here, such as sitting at one of the island’s many beaches. Here’s a look at some of the best beaches the island of Ios has to offer:

Mylopotas

Mylopotas Beach is considered to be one of the best beaches on the island. In fact, if you want to be at a beach that is packed with people during peak season, this is the beach that you should head to! Much of the tourist activity on the island concerning beaches is concentrated here, which means that you’re in for a treat if you enjoy this type of atmosphere. However, despite the fact that it can get busy, it is also a great place to relax and enjoy the great landscape. There is also plenty of space here, which means you can always find a quiet corner of the beach. There are services here and also umbrellas and sun beds to rent.

Manganari

If you would rather head to a beach that is more known for its beauty than its crowds, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Manganari Beach! Many consider this to be the most beautiful beach on the island, so if you’re looking for stunning scenery, this is the place to be. It is located about 19 kilometers away from Chora, the main village on the island. You can take public transportation, drive, or even rent a taxi in order to get there. It is also a great beach for swimming because the coves shield the beach from the wind.

Gialos

Are you looking for a beach that is convenient from Chora, the main village on the island? Gialos Beach is only a 2 kilometer drive from Chora, which means that if you don’t take transportation, drive a car, or hire a taxi, you could easily walk since it won’t even take you 30 minutes. The walk is pretty scenic and on a beautiful day, this is a great option for people. The beach is also known for its large area and gorgeous, golden sands. Since it is so accessible from Chora, it tends to get busy.

Koumbaro

Koumbaro Beach is another place that can get busy during peak season since it is only four kilometers from Chora. You can also easily walk here from the port of Omos and it should only take about thirty minutes to do so. The beach has sun beds and umbrellas to rent and also gets pretty busy during peak season.

While on the island of Ios, there is certainly a lot that you can do. Whether walking the streets, shopping, or enjoying the nightlife, the island won’t disappoint. The beaches, however, will definitely be the highlight of your trip and you should make the time to visit as many as possible!

The island of Ios is home to a scuba diving center that was established in 2007 by an experienced family in the area of water sports. The center is located at the main beach of Mylopotas. The island of Ios has a long and fascinating history. This history can be seen in the chapels and monasteries, cultural attractions, archaeological sites, and museums. When visiting the Greek island of Ios, Skarkos is an important site that will make a great addition to your trip. Here’s what you should know about Skarkos on Ios.

About Skarkos on Ios

Skarkos is an early Bronze Age settlement. It is an important prehistoric archaeological site, considered the most important in the Cyclades. Skarkos is located a few kilometers from the port of Ios on the hill of Skarkos. The settlement is dated about one thousand years older than the Akrotiri of Santorini. The cemetery of the settlement dates to the end of the Middle and beginning of the Late Bronze Age. Excavations have uncovered impressive architecture and portable findings that help paint a picture of structure of the communities.

The settlement appears to have been planned. Skarkos was developed along two long roads that were 2 meters wide and surrounded that hill. The road would widen in various areas, likely for the formation of squares both large and small. At least 35 buildings have been uncovered during excavations so far as well as 6 construction posts. The buildings were used as residences. Some of the residences were large, while others were small, which indicates different social statuses.

Visit Skarkos on Ios

There are two entrances you can use when visiting Skarkos. One of the entrances is wheelchair accessible. While exploring the ancient site, you can read the placards that provide more information about the area or building that stood there. You will be impressed by the advanced lifestyle that was lived there for the time. The site is very accessible for viewing. As you explore the site, you will notice many of the buildings still stand at a decent height.

If you are taking a hike up Chora’s Hill, you will be able to look down on Skarkos and view it as a whole. This will also give you a view of the surrounding area. While in the area visiting Skarkos, you can spend some time at the port and in Chora. Chora is the main and only village in Ios. It is a 20 minute walk from the port. Chora was built amphitheatrically with its small houses that have flat roofs. The charming stone streets wind around the village.

Getting to Skarkos on Ios

There is no airport on the island of Ios, so it can only be accessed by ferry. You can catch the ferry at Piraeus Port in Athens and also some of the Cycladic Islands including Sifnos, Milos, Paros, and Santorini. Once on the island of Ios, getting around is most easily done by public bus. There are buses that connect the port, Chora, and other popular attractions. Renting a car or motorbike is also a good option if you want to tour around at your own pace.

Skarkos is a site that is worth visiting while on the Greek island of Ios.

Ios-330x202When you’re researching which of the Greek islands are the best to visit as a tourist, I’m sure you will hear all about islands like Crete, Santorini and Rhodes. But one of the most underrated Greek islands is Ios.

The beaches in Ios are some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, which draw large crowds of young tourists every single year. The two most popular beaches here in Ios are Mylopotas Beach and Manganari Beach. Which one is more amazing? Flip a coin and there is your answer. Located relatively close to the main village, Mylopotas Beach is the most frequented beach on the island of Ios. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas here, but most people don’t spend too much time lying around, as there are plenty of water sports that you can partake in at Mylopotas Beach. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance of the beach, but the party never stops at Far Out Club. This bar, right on the beach, is where you will find the best beach party in Ios. Oh, and the sunbeds at Far Out Club are free!

Manganari Beach may not be the most visited beach in Ios, but it certainly is on par with Mylopotas Beach in terms of quality, cleanliness and crystal clear water. Although it is just as nice as Mylopotas Beach, it is not nearly as crowded due to its remote location. Because the beach is so secluded, it will take some time to travel there, but there are plenty of busses that shuttle back and forth to Manganari Beach for you to use. The major difference between the two beaches is that Mylopotas Beach is one large beach, whereas Manganari Beach is a series of sandy coves that make up a handful of small beaches. The bay area is protected from any strong winds, which makes the water very calm, and ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The water is so clear that it looks like you’re swimming in a giant swimming pool. Beyond being incredibly clear, the water is also so warm that you’ll never want to get out!

For me, snorkeling isn’t enough. It’s one thing to see what’s under the water from atop the surface, but it’s a completely different (and amazing) experience to get down there and check it out up close and personal. Whether you have been diving before — or even if it is your first time ever — you won’t regret looking up Meltemi Dive Centre when you are in Ios. First, you will need to complete their course in order to earn an open water qualification. During the course, you will learn everything you need to know to ensure that you will complete a safe, successful and exciting diving experience. The equipment that you will use at Meltemi Dive Centre is state of the art, and the training you will receive is the most proficient on the island of Ios. Once the school has deemed that you have comprehended all of the proper training, you will be able to partake in dives that range from shipwrecks to reefs, and other carefully chosen locations to guarantee that any diver will have excellent visibility, while exploring the depths of the sea.
