Ilia is a picturesque village in North Euboea, Greece.Although Evia (Euboea) is Greece’s second largest island, it still feels a little bit tucked away. The island is fairly mountainous, which gives the island a majestic quality. Not only that, but the island’s sheer size leaves the visitor with plenty to do. The beaches, however, are where the island shines. Although there are plenty of travelers who do make their way here, the sheer size of the island keeps the beaches feeling lively without making them feel too crowded. Here’s a list of some of our favorite beaches to visit on Evia (Euboea):

Metoxi Beach

Metoxi is one of those beaches that is just perfect for those who are looking to get a bit isolated. This beach presents people with the ideal opportunity to relax and enjoy the natural scenery. There are mountains nearby and the air is crisp and refreshing. The water is also perfect for swimming. If you’re looking for a beach that has a bit of a crowd, this certainly isn’t the place for you. If total relaxation is what you’re after, you should head to Metoxi Beach!

Hiliadou Beach

If you want to visit the island’s most bustling beach, Hiliadou is the place to be! Throughout the warm summer months, this beach is filled with both locals and travelers looking to soak up the sun. This is also a popular destination for campers so don’t be alarmed if you see some tents pitched near the beachside. There are also plenty of tavernas nearby to satisfy your hunger, many of which have a nice view of the water.

Mourteri Beach

Long regarded as one of the best beaches on the island, Mourteri is a place that you simply must visit! It is located about 10 kilometers away from Kymi so if you know this is a beach that you won’t want to miss, you should stay near Kymi instead of some of the other places on the island. The main draw is the fact that the water is particularly warm and is a gorgeous, sparkling shade of blue – especially when the sun hits it.

Agiocampos Beach

Although the route to Agiocampos Beach initially gives travelers the impression that it is fairly hidden, once you do find it, you realize that there are some telltale signs of life. For one thing, the beach usually has a healthy crowd and there are plenty of people here swimming in the water or lounging on one of the sun beds. There are also plenty of nearby cafes, restaurants, tavernas, and hotels to satisfy all your travel needs!

Rovies Beach

If you’re someone who really enjoys to swim in the water once you find a great beach, you’ll want to spend some time at Rovies! Although you can easily swim at any of these choices, Rovies stands out from the rest because of its gentle, warm waters and quiet atmosphere make this the ideal place for relaxation. If you’re staying in Chalcis, it will take you over an hour to drive here, but the trip will be well worth it.

Of course, there are other things to do on Evia (Euboea) than visit the beach. However, the beaches are certainly an enjoyable part of the experience! If you have plenty of time, you might want to consider visiting each one of these.

If your travel plans include beautiful beaches with crystal-clear water and soft, exotic sand for you to lay in, you’ve probably been eyeing a vacation to Greece. In addition to their rugged mountains and lush forest, the beauty and diversity of Greece will draw you in like no other vacation spot.

However, to vacation properly in Greece means taking in more than the beautiful beaches. Continue reading to discover the historic, massive buildings on the southern, or mountain side of the island of Euboea, Greece, known as the Dragon Houses, or Drakospita, of Evia, Greece.

About the Dragon Houses of Evia, Greece

Although not widely known by tourists, the Dragon Houses of Evia are famous landmarks in Greece and are an archaeological mystery. There are 23 of the limestone-rock buildings, and it is guessed that they were used as sanctuaries, churches, shelters, or lookout spots. The dragon houses are spread across the island of Euboea, located off the eastern part of Greece.

There is also a mystery about how long the Dragon Houses have been there; some believe is since the 18th century. However, they were found in 1797 by a British geologist. It is Greek legend that dragons built these houses for several reasons: the enormous rocks and the dragons had supernatural strength. If humans created them so far, no one knows who they could have been.

Since being discovered, many archaeologists have visited the Dragon Houses, trying to get more details. In 1959 because more visitors were looking at the Dragon Houses, they decided to make sure the structure was sound. At that time, they found some text in an unknown script saved for a museum. In 2002 and 2004, other researchers concluded that the Dragon Houses were originally astronomical observatories.

What to Do at the Dragon Houses of Evia, Greece

Those visiting Nea Stira, Karystos, or Marmari are close and usually into walking tours and architecture, making the Dragon Houses great attractions. In addition to great stories surrounding the mountains and the Dragon Houses, the well-preserved buildings are massive and well-constructed, making the ancient sights once-in-a-lifetime observations. However, although there are Dragon Houses in Styra and all over the island, the best-preserved one is located on top of Mount Ochi.

Although it may not be necessary, bringing a set of binoculars is a great idea so that you can take in the breathtaking views and understand how the houses are strategically placed and give an observer a lot of territory to see for a great distance.

Getting to the Dragon Houses of Evia, Greece

Although some signposts indicate the direction of some of the Dragon Houses, others are in remote locations and not easy to access. So distant that rocks need to be moved from the road for cars to cross. Most people drive as close as possible to the Dragon Houses, park, and then hike the hour to the actual house.

In addition, if you are visiting Athens, a popular tourist attraction in Greece, you have options for getting to Evia (which is quite large) and those include car or boat. However, the shoreline is on the east of Evia which would mean a car ride then hike to the Dragon Houses.

Evia, also referred to as Euobea depending on the source, is the second largest island in Greece. As a result of this, there a lot of things to do. Besides lounging on the beach, visiting museums, and eating in traditional Greek restaurants, Evia also has plenty of opportunities for spending time in nature. In fact, one of the top activities to do on the island is hike, and Mount Ochi is considered to be one of the top hikes you can do. Here’s what you need to know in order to hike Mount Ochi during your stay:

Getting to Evia

Before you can actually do your hike, you need to find your way to the island. Evia has its own regional airport and there are daily flights that go there from the Athens Airport. It is also incredibly close to mainland Greece and was actually thought to be part of the mainland at on time. The fact that it is so close to the mainland indicates that it is possible to easily take a boat or ferry from the mainland. There are also ferries that leave from the main ports. Once you arrive in Evia, you might want to rent a car so that you can easily see the sites.

Stay in or Near Myli

Since the island is so large, you’ll have plenty of options in terms of where to stay. If you know that you want to climb Mount Ochi, consider staying in a hotel either in Myli or somewhere nearby. The main trail for the mountain is located in Myli and staying close to it will make your hike much more enjoyable.

What to Know to Hike Mount Ochi

In order to successfully hike Mount Ochi, which is 1398 meters, or 4587 feet high, it helps to be prepared. It is important to understand that this hike isn’t suited for everyone and it takes someone who is at least at an intermediate level of fitness in order to complete it. There are some steep areas, and climbing uphill for so long takes a certain level of physical conditioning that not everyone has. It is also a good idea to make sure you have enough food and water to make you safe. Proper clothing and footwear is also a must. You should also let someone who isn’t hiking with you where you are going in case you have a problem while on the trail.

Information About the Trail

As mentioned above, it takes an average of four hours to hike to the summit of this mountain. It should take around three hours in order to hike down. While it is possible to complete this hike in one day, it is also physically exhausting. Fortunately, there is a shelter located at about the 1000 meter, or 3280 foot, point which will enable you to spend the night on the mountain and get some rest. You can summit when you wake up the next morning and then leisurely make your way back down to Myli.

While on the island of Evia, you won’t want to miss the chance to hike Mount Ochi!

Beach of Chalkis, GreeceEvia is the second largest island in Greece and also has the second largest population of any of the islands.  It’s one of the closest islands to Athens and since it is so vast, you could spend several weeks here and not even come close to seeing all of it. Because of its proximity to Athens and how beautiful it is, Evia is a popular destination for native Greeks and tourists alike.

The island has a rich history that dates back to Ancient Greece. The island was also referred to under different names, such as Makris and Doliche. It seems that the name of the island changed depending on who occupied it at the time. After the Turkish occupation of Greece ended, the island’s name was changed to what it is today.

Getting to Evia

If you do decide to visit this island, there are three basic options you can choose. First, you can take a ferry. The easiest way to get to the island, however, is by car or bus.  There are two land bridges that connect Evia to mainland Greece. So if you’re renting a car during your vacation, Evia is an easy stop.

Where to Stay

Because Evia is so big, you have a lot of choices as to where to stay. There are two fairly larger cities on the island – Chalkis and Eretria. If you want a trip that involves city life, staying in or near one of these places will be ideal. You can also stay in one of the island’s many beach resorts or one of the smaller villages. Each place offers a different kind of vacation and the ideal situation would be to have enough time to experience a little bit of everything!

What to Do

One of the things that makes Evia so unique is its landscape. Crystal blue waters sparkle in the Aegean sun, making it an ideal place for beach goers. Those who love water sports will also love it here. For instance, it’s one of the top destinations in Greece for scuba divers. You can also go snorkeling and even windsurfing!

Evia is also a popular destination for hikers, thanks to a large mountain range that runs through the center of the island. Hikers flock here not only to test their endurance in the Greek wilderness, but to also experience some of the local culture on the island. Spend the day hiking and then have a great meal in one of Evia’s many tavernas and restaurants.

If scenic driving is something that you enjoy, be sure to take the road from Halkidi to the north, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful drives on Evia. Anywhere you visit on the island has a different character than the next, and it can be difficult to find a place to spend most of your time – they all have their own charm. The solution, then, would be to explore to your heart’s content, and then spend more time in your favorite place.
