Folegandros, Greece is known for its rugged coastlines, rocky mountains, lovely beaches, and beautiful villages. The island of Folegandros is home to monuments, archaeological sites, good food, castles, and so much more.

Getting to the island can be done via ferry as there is no airport. The closest airport is in Santorini. From there you can catch a ferry to Folegandros. During high season, ferries run almost daily. The trip can be long, up to 6 – 8 hours depending on the route as some vessels stop at the other islands in the Cyclades. When you get to Folegandros, there are some prominent attractions and beaches you won’t want to miss out on while exploring.

Karavostasi Beach

Located just 3 km southeast of Folegandros Town, Karavostasi Beach is ideal for families. The beach is close to the port and since it’s so close to town, you’ll have access to amenities. The crystal clear water, with its sandy bottom, is perfect for swimming and the sand is dotted with pebbles.

Karavostasi Beach is close to other beaches if you’re up for more exploring. Around the beach of Karavostasi you will see the traditional Cycladic style in the form of houses along the landscape. There are plenty of trees to provide shade on warm and sunny days.

The Lighthouse of Aspropounta

The Lighthouse of Aspropounta was built in 1919. The lighthouse can be seen while walking the island of Folegandros. It is 58 meters above sea level and features an 11-meter tall light. The lighthouse of Aspropounta started operating in 1921. The lighthouse was originally lit by a wick until switched to a petroleum gas mechanism. Then in 1985, it switched to solar energy. You can get to the lighthouse by way of Livadaki or Ano Meria.

Agali Beach

Agali Beach is about 5 kilometers west of Folegandros Town. This beach is partly organized and ideal for those who love to swim. There are umbrellas and sun beds for rent and sea sports are available on site as well. The beach is long with fine sand and clear water. There are taverns nearby when you want food and drinks. Agali Beach is popular, so if you don’t mind crowds you will enjoy this beach. The word Agali means “to hug,” which suits this beach as looks as if it’s being hugged by the huge rocks around it.

Kastro

Kastro is the oldest part of the village and a medieval fortified settlement that was built close to the edge of a cliff. It was built there to help protect inhabitants of the island from invasions from pirates. Since it was constructed, it has been inhabited continuously. Some of the houses are over 1,000 years old, in good condition, and still used to this day. The alleyways of the Kastro will make you feel like you’ve stepped back time with their traditional character.

Church of Panagia

The Church of Panagia is the largest church on the island of Folegandros. The church is built on a rocky hill located above Chora. The Church of Panagia was built on the foundations of an ancient temple. The whitewashed church features statue and sculpture bases in the lovely courtyard that is found in the interior of the church. There is an ancient inscription displayed on the church as well as a marble epigraph inside that lists the renovation of the temple that took place in 1821. This is the form of the church you see today. You will find the Church of Panagia by following a cobblestone street from the Square of Pounda in Chora.

Kastro

Kastro is the oldest part of the village. It is a medieval fortified settlement that was built at the edge of a cliff. Kastro was built in order to protect the residents of the island from possible pirate invasions. The outer walls of Kastro were built right on the cliff. Kastro is an amazing place to visit as some of the houses are one thousand years old and in good condition. Many are still inhabited today. The alleys are equally interesting and charming. Kastro is a site of historical preservation.

Settlement of Chora

The capital of Folegandros is a must-see when you’re visiting the island. Chora is located on the eastern side of the island. It features traditional architecture of the Cyclades including whitewashed houses and their colorful windows, flowers hanging throughout the squares, and labyrinth alleys. If you want to experience Folegandros and the Cyclades, Chora should be on your list of places to visit. The food won’t disappoint either. You will find delicious Greek cuisine and seafood throughout Chora.

Mount of Agios Eleftherios

The Mount of Agios Eleftherios is the highest mountain on the island of Folegandros at 455 meters high. If you enjoy hiking, there is a hiking trail that goes to the Mount of Agios Eleftherios. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the island and surrounding area. If you’re lucky enough to be on the Mount of Agios Eleftherios during sunset, this is a breathtaking sight to see.

Ancient Town of Paleokastro

On the mountain slopes above the churchyard of Panagia is the Ancient Town of Paleokastro. In 1840, remnants of a medieval tower and ancient wall were discovered. Close to the church there is a narrow street that will lead you up to the ancient town. The panoramic view from the Ancient Town of Paleokastro is worth the trip up.

The island of Folegandros won’t disappoint. Its history, beauty, and charm will have you entranced.

Folegandros is one of those islands in the Cyclades that has an enchanting, magical appeal. Like all the Cycladic islands, Folegandros is filled with gorgeous scenery and an easy, relaxed atmosphere. The rolling hills, photogenic villages, and easy atmosphere are all part of the life here. While visiting, however, you absolutely won’t want to miss the chance to visit some of the beaches. Here’s a look at some of the best beaches to visit while on the island:

Karavostasi Beach

One of the benefits to spending the day at Karavostasi Beach is that it is in a great location. Since it is close to the port, which is where much of the activity on the island is concentrated, this is an ideal choice for those who don’t have long to spend on the island. This beach is also known as being one of the best places on the island for swimming since the waters here are so warm and calm. It is also a great place to go walking since the beach itself is so long. It is one of those places that is also ideal for families who are looking to relax and enjoy themselves in the sun. The calmness of the waters also increases the safety of small children.

Agali Beach

If you love the hustle and bustle of a popular beach, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Agali Beach! The gorgeous scenery and relaxed charm of this beach make the beach a great choice for visitors and locals alike. During the summer months, there is a healthy scene here and plenty of tavernas, restaurants, and cafes near the beach to sustain a healthy amount of activity from its visitors. However, after tourist season is over, many of these places tend to close down since the number of visitors who come here in the offseason is too low for these places to justify staying open. While on the island during peak season, this is one beach you won’t want to miss.

Vardia Beach

This is another great beach to spend time at in Folegandros. Vardia Beach is also within close proximity of several resorts, so this is a great beach to visit especially if you are staying nearby. It is also close to the port, which means that it is another convenient choice to enjoy during a short stay. Like most beaches on the island, this is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sunshine. The beach is also made up of a fine sand and the sun is warm and inviting.

Ambeli Beach

Although the beachside area at Ambeli Beach is rather small, venturing here is still worth the effort. Surrounded by rocks, this beach is shielded pretty well from the wind, which means that spending time here will be even more relaxing than it is at some of the other beaches. This beach also isn’t accessible by car, bus, or taxi and that means that people who come here need to either reach it by foot or take a boat. Spending time here appeals to the most adventurous and those who are looking to find a little solitude.

Agios Georgios Beach

Another beach you’ll want to visit on Folegandros is Agios Georgios Beach, which is known for its relaxing atmosphere. This is a beach that is also known for its warm, crystal clear water. Unlike some of the other beaches on the island, Agios Georgios is made of beautiful, soft sand. However, since the wind can be aggressive here, it is a good idea to check the weather report. There are other beaches that are less windy that you can enjoy during your stay on the island.

Ligaria Beach

If you are craving a beach that seems to be tucked out of the way, Ligaria is the place to be! This is a gorgeous beach that somehow doesn’t attract the crowds of the other three mentioned here. It’s also incredibly beautiful and worthy of exploring. Unfortunately, there are no services here, which means that you will need to bring your own chair, towel, and umbrella. The beach is also easily accessible from the village of Ano Meria.

While on Folegandros, you should make the time to visit these beautiful beaches!

A trip to the Aspropounta Lighthouse is a must-do when visiting the sunny island of Folegandros, Greece. The island’s natural, unspoiled beauty is a siren-call to visitors, but the Aspropounta Lighthouse has been a special place to explore and admire for visitors and locals alike for the last 100 years.

About the Lighthouse of Aspropounta

First opened in 1921, the Lighthouse is located on a rocky outcropping on the southwestern coast of Livadaki beach at Giofiri (Greek for “bridge”). Standing as a white-washed beacon to sailors of the past and present, Aspropounta’s storied history exemplifies the modern Greek approach to life. This lighthouse was first lit by a wick and then petroleum gas to produce the life-saving lights. This structure, created to notify ships of the small, rocky island of Aspropounta has now been powered by solar energy since 1986. Today, powered by nearly self-sufficient solar power, the guardhouse next to the lighthouse is mostly empty. Standing 58 meters above sea level, the white-washed lighthouse sports an 11-meter light that can be viewed from up to 17 miles away.

What to Do at the Lighthouse of Aspropounta

When planning a visit to this beautiful and historical location, you can expect a beautiful view of the ocean and sky no matter what time of day you visit. A stop at this iconic landmark will include walking around the base of the structure as well as admiring the architecture and lighting of the lighthouse from the outside. If you are lucky enough to stop by when the guardhouse is staffed, you might be able to score an inside tour of the lighthouse, as well.

Getting to the Lighthouse of Aspropounta

Since the Lighthouse of Aspropounta is located adjacent to the beach of Livadaki, planning a trip to visit it can easily be connected to a trip there. Since the lighthouse is located on an outcropping of rock, a small walk or hike is necessary to reach the structure, regardless of the method of transportation to the area.

From Samos
If arriving by car from Samos, expect a short drive from the city on a paved road followed by a 3-meter dirt road to the beach of Livadaki. From Livadaki, an approximately 30-minute hike up the connecting path is needed to reach the lighthouse.

From Livadaki
From Livadaki beach, visitors to the Lighthouse of Aspropounta need to take a hiking path. This stretch of the island’s circular walking path will take between 30 minutes and an hour to arrive at the lighthouse. The beach area of Livadaki is accessible by car from Samos or by the boats that run from nearby Angali beach about every 30 minutes during the day.

From Apano Meria
Visitors can take the island’s circular walking path from the town of Apano Meria to the Lighthouse at Aspropounta in about 30 minutes of hiking. This trail is part of a larger path that encircles the island of Folegandros, and the other side of the lighthouse path leads down to Livadaki beach after a short hike.

While visiting Folegandros, Greece, you should consider spending time Lighthouse of Aspropounta.

The small island of Folegandros is a tranquil destination. At just 8 miles long and 3 miles wide, the island is rocky, yet fascinating. There isn’t a lot to see in Folegandros, but the sightseeing that exists is worth the trip. Folegandros is known for its beautiful beaches, azure waters, and hidden coves. When visiting the island, one attraction you should see is Chrissospilia Cave.

About Chrissospilia Cave

Chrissospilia Cave is located in Folegandros, Greece on the northeastern side of the island. The cave sits 10 meters above the sea. Chrissospilia Cave is protected by the Archaeological Service. This means you need a special permit to visit the cave, which is reachable only by boat. Findings in the cave have revealed human skeletons, potsherds, a Roman cistern, and broken vases. Ancient names and surnames have also been found on the walls of Chrissospilia Cave written with clay mud. These findings make the cave a unique find in Greece. The cave may have once been a place of worship during the 4th century, but this is not yet confirmed. Excavations are still taking place in Chrissospilia Cave.

One thought is that the names on the walls of the caves belong to young men who were taking part in a right of passage to adulthood. These young men would come from all over Greece to take part. Getting to Chrissospilia Cave would be their first test as it required physical strength and bravery. Once inside the cave, they would go through various rituals.

Chrissospilia Cave consists of two chambers that are connected by a narrow passage. The ceiling of one of the chambers has stalactites. The cave also consists of stalagmites. During antiquity, steps that are known as the “Hellenic steps” were built leading up to the cave.

Visit Chrissospilia Cave on Folegandros

Visiting Chrissospilia Cave might be difficult, but it’s worth the trip if you get a special permit from the community. Otherwise, you can only view the cave from the water, but it’s an interesting sight to see, especially if you know the story about the right of passage for young men. You can visualize them making the journey up the cave and taking part in rituals.

There are boat tours available around the island of Folegandros. You might catch a glimpse of Chrissospilia Cave during one of these tours.

Getting to Chrissospilia Cave

There is no airport on the small island of Folegandros. The closest airport is on Santorini. You can get to the island of Folegandros from Santorini by taking a one hour long boat ride. The ferry from Athens takes 6-8 hours. Chrissospilia Cave can only be reached by boat.

When visiting the island of Folegandros, be sure to take a boat to explore the area of Chrissospilia Cave.
