In many ways, Aegina is no different than any other of the Greek islands. The way of life here is peaceful and laid back, which means that visitors can certainly come here for a relaxing island retreat. However, there is so much more to this place than meets the eye. This small island is not only gorgeous and charming, it is also crammed with enough ancient sites to keep archeological enthusiasts happy. Here is an overview of things you won’t want to miss while you visit Aegina:

Temple of Aphaia

Visiting the Temple of Aphaia will be one of the highlights of your trip. This temple was dedicated to the goddess Aphaia, the principal deity on the island. As far as historians and archaeologists can tell, this is the only place where the goddess was actually worshipped, which makes the site especially unique. Although the temple is located here, most of the myths surrounding the goddess have their origins on the island of Crete.

Agios Nektarios Monastery

Once your done observing the ancient temple, consider switching gears by visiting the Agios Nektarios Monastery, which is the home of Greek Orthodox monks on the island. This monastery is fairly modern and is considered by many to be one of the highlights of their stay. Stop in and visit the church and the monastery during its visiting hours. Visitors are asked to be respectful by wearing the proper attire and also visiting during the monastery’s public hours. Be sure to visit the inside of the church to view the traditional icons and decorations.

Moni Island Beach

Your stay on Aegina won’t be complete without a trip to the beach! Although there are plenty of beaches scattered throughout the island, none is as unique as the beach on Moni Island. In order to get here, you will need to take a boat to the small island. The trip itself takes under eight minutes. However, you will need to check the boat schedules for the times. Although it takes some effort to get here, the beach is usually busy. It’s also incredibly gorgeous and definitely worth a visit!

Archaeological Museum of Aegina

Sure, you can spend a lot of time hopping from one archaeological site to the other during your stay. However, it is incredibly difficult to put all the pieces together unless you visit the Archaeological Museum of Aegina! This place is at the cornerstone of the island’s archaeological history. The island is filled with important excavation sites. However, most of the artifacts that were found are actually housed here. Not only that, but the museum gives a nice overview of the archeological history of the island. In fact, you might want to visit this museum before you visit the actual sites so that you can get a nice overview.

While visiting Aegina, it is important not to let all your sightseeing get in the way of all the beautiful things that make every Greek destination great. Give yourself plenty of time to soak up the sun, eat the delicious foods, and spend some time wandering during your stay, as well!

Aegina is one of those Greek islands that may feel like it is off the beaten track, but it does get a fair amount of visiors. When driving toward Perdika from Aegina, you’ll come across Marathonas beach, which located halfway between both destinations. This popular, well-organized beach is renowned for its beautiful sands and shallow waters and is the perfect choice for locals and visitors alike.

About Marathonas Beach

Marathonas Beach is a wonderful place for spending the day swimming and sunbathing and watching the gorgeous sunset. Marathonas Beach is divided into two lovely beaches, Marathonas A and Marathonas B, both of which are totally worth spending time at. Marathonas A is on the west of the island while Marathonas B is just outside the village.

Both beaches get really busy during summer, and they also offer similar amenities. For instance, they both have lifeguards, sell food and drinks, and rent out umbrellas and sunbeds.
If you arrive early enough, you’ll beat the crowds and find the perfect place to set up your umbrella. If you get a delightful spot because you arrived early, you can see the variegated blue colors of the sea. If the sky is clear, you can see the islands of Moni, Methana, and Agistri.

What to Do in Marathonas Beach

Many visitors, as well as locals, believe there are no better beaches in Aegina than Marathonas. It has many features that make it ideal. For one thing, the shallow water makes it perfect for families with small children. For another, the sand appears almost endless.

It is also one of the cleanest places in Aegina, with two of the best eating places: Ammos and La Palma. Additionally, both restaurants offer free sunbeds for those who eat there. Since Aegina has many other interesting taverns to visit in this area, it’s best to explore these before visiting Marathonas, because once you arrive at the beach, you’ll lose interest in going anywhere else.

Getting to Marathonas Beach

You can get to Marathonas Beach by renting a car, taking the bus, or hiring a taxi. The bus travels to Perdika, which is further to the south. While traveling by bus is cheap and convenient, it has one drawback–it is often congested. For this reason, many visitors prefer to take a taxi, which will only cost about 8 Euros, one way.

When taking a bus or taxi, you have two options: get off at Marathonas A or Marathonas B. They both offer a slightly different experience.

Marathonos A comes first. It’s a good place to stop if you want a lively trip because there are many taverns around the beach area serving superb food and beverages. Conversely, if you’d prefer a quieter trip, perhaps taking your own packed food, then Marathonas B may be a good choice. It’s a lovely place to sunbathe and swim until sunset. However, if you’re really into sunsets, autumn is the best time to visit. The sunsets behind the lovely island of Moni are particularly spectacular at that time of the year.

The beach restaurants at Marathonas open for the first time at Greek Easter. That’s when life on the beach officially begins. All sunbeds and umbrellas are in place through the length and breadth of the entire beach at the beginning of June. The last day of October marks the end of beach season, and that is when most of the locations will close.

]]>
Aegina is one of those charming Greek islands that not only offers a glimpse at typical Greek island life, but it also offers a glimpse at Greece’s past history. Not only is the whole island filled with ancient ruins, but it also has a strong Medieval presence. Paleochora is most know for being a village with strong roots from this time period, and it is absolutely worth a visit while you’re in the island. Here’s more information on visiting Peleochora while on Aegina:

Getting to Aegina

Since there is no airport on Aegina, you’ll need to take a ferry. Your easiest bet is to take the ferry from Piraeus, which is close to the Athens Airport. There are buses and taxis that make the trip from the airport to the port on a regular basis. Once you arrive at the port in Aegina, you’ll be able to make your way to your hotel by taxi, bus, or rental car.  If you know you are interested in visiting Paleochora, you might want to book a hotel that is nearby. Otherwise, since the island is fairly small, you can always hire a taxi or drive from any point on the island without too much trouble.

Information About Paleochora

One of the things that sets Aegina apart from other islands is the fact that it has a strong Byzantine presence and this is evidenced in its architecture. Paleochora, which literally means “Old Town” in Greek, has strong ties to Byzantine Empire and reached its height during the Medieval time period of Europe. This means that it is a fine example of a typical Byzantine village. There was a time when this village was considered to be the capital city of Aegina. However, this is no longer the case. The Monastery of Agios Nektarios and several churches are located here. Both of these sites are worth visiting. Basically, Paleochora is all that’s left of a village that reached its height during the Byzantine Era and was abandoned permanently in the 1820’s.

What to do in Paleochora

Paleochora is one of those villages that offers visitors a glimpse into what a place from the Byzantine Era looks like. It’s referred to as a “Medieval” village, but in truth, it’s history is much older than that. Old buildings dot the countryside and since it is close to a monastery, there are also a lot of churches. A total of thirty of these churches have survived and you can easily spend your day wandering the hills visiting every single one of them. All of them are fine examples of Byzantine architecture. Although there are no longer people living here, it’s fun to come here to wander through the hills and catch a glimpse of a part of Greece’s past. It’s also incredibly scenic so you’ll want to bring your camera to photograph the buildings, scenery, and the many wildflowers that are present here.

While on Aegina, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Paleochora!

If you are looking for a place rich in beauty, history, and culture, then the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina is a great place to see. The temple is located on the island of Aegina, Greece, and should be on your list of places to see while visiting this regio of Greece. Here’s more information about it:

About the Temple of Aphaia

The Temple of Aphaia is one of the best-preserved Doric temples and is especially important for its sculptural decoration. It was built built by order of King Aphais and his wife Queen Euippe in 600 B.C. As you enter the temple, you see a large hall with two columns that are made from marble and limestone.

There is also a statue that depicts Nike, a Greek goddess who personifies victory in this area. It’s believed that Queen Euippe wanted to commemorate her husband’s victory at sea against Egypt during the war between these two ancient nations – as well as her own victories over Persian invaders.

The design of the temple has a very strong, monumental appearance – you cannot help but be impressed by its size. It also appears to have an altar or something similar in front of it – which gives visitors a glimpse into religious ceremonies that were once held here at this spot.

It also features a double row of columns that have been restored from the original structures. It was originally constructed to be completely surrounded by water, but as time went on, the land was added, and it now stands as a beautiful memorial for those who have passed away! It is one of the most impressive ancient temples you will ever see – so if you are lucky enough to visit Aegina, then this is a must-see destination.

What to Do at the Temple of Aphaia

The Temple of Aphaia is the perfect place to begin your exploration of the island. There are several other sites that are located across Aegina, which are great for exploring! You can also explore the island by boat. It’s definitely important to see what else this area has to offer if you have time!

Another thing you can do at the temple is take a look at the photos and postcards for sale near the entrance. These can give you an idea about what activities, attractions, and other information to see while you’re here in Aegina.

You can purchase your own postcards and photos – or just take a look at what’s available. For an even closer look at the history of Aegina, you can also purchase books that are about this area.

Getting to the Temple of Aphaia

You can get to the Temple of Aphaia by taking a boat to Aegina from either Piraeus or Rafina. It’s also possible to drive there if you have access to a car. If not, then public transportation is another great way to get here! You can catch buses and trains that will take you directly to Aegina – and once you’re there, all you need to do is walk!

This temple is well known for its history, beauty, and religious significance so that it may be crowded with visitors during your visit. However, this just shows how many people value this site as one of Greece’s most beautiful monuments.

If you are interested in seeing the Temple of Aphaia, then make sure to visit it during your time on Aegina. It is a great place for those who want to explore a bit of history and learn more about what life was like back in ancient times. The island itself is also a wonderful place that many people enjoy visiting because of its incredible scenery, natural beauty, and exquisite views.

There are restaurants, hotels, and other services located on this island and everywhere else across Greece. This can be another great reason why packing up and traveling to Greece might be exactly what you need!

Temple of AphaeaAegina has all the easy charm of a relaxing Greek island, but without all the crowds. It’s perched on the Saronic Gulf and, besides being a haven for tourists, is also a common weekend destination for native Greeks. It’s a place where the past and present intersect nicely, and history aficionados will find plenty of things to satisfy their curiosity of times past. However, that’s not all the island has to offer. This island provides travelers with a perfect escape.

The port of Aegina has a bustle that the rest of the island doesn’t feel. Fisherman haul in their fresh catches, while busy cooks and restaurant owners clamor for the best choices. The island is also on an active ferry route, and the boats are constantly stopping here to let passengers on and off. There’s also plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes scattered throughout the port area, waiting to give weary travelers sustenance.

For those eager to explore Greek mythology, the Temple of Aphaia, which was dedicated to the goddess Apahaia, is perched over the beautiful island landscape and is a stunning example of Doric architecture. Interestingly enough, the only real evidence that archaeologists have found concerning the goddess is isolated at this time. It seems as if this was the only place in all of Ancient Greece where she was worshipped. According to legend, she was close to Artemis, who eventually turned her into a goddess.

The history of Aegina is also fairly turbulent. By 7th Century B.C, Aegina had a formidable navy and greatly assisted the Athenian city-state during the Persian Wars. Aegina played a big part in the Greek victory at the Battle of Salamis, which many helped turn the tide of that war. Xerxes eventually retreated and was never able to conquer Ancient Greece.

Aegina’s landscape is also fairly unique. About two-thirds of the island actually houses an extinct volcano. Volcanic activity played a large part in shaping the current landscape of the island. While the terrain isn’t particularly rocky, the soil is extremely fertile, which could be a direct result of the volcanic activity. However, inhabitants need not be concerned – the volcano isn’t as formidable as it once was. Now, all that remains is the evidence of its existence. Nevertheless, it’s important to understand how the volcano itself shaped the history of the island.

Just like any Greek island, there is a lively culture by the coast. There are plenty of beaches here to satisfy any holiday-goer. It’s also a major draw for those looking to escape the city, so it experiences a steady influx of travelers throughout the year, many of which come from Athens. Be sure to check out beaches such as Agia Marina and Vagia. They’re considered to be some of the island’s best.

Since it is so close to Athens (only about 15 nautical miles) that makes it an easy stop during your Greek vacation. In fact, it’s a fairly easy ferry ride from Piraeus, which is close to the Athenian airport. The island is so interesting and unique, that you’ll want to spend at least a few days here.
