View from the old village (Chora) of Alonissos island, Northern Sporades, Aegean sea, Greece, EuropeAlonnisos is one of those idyllic Greek islands that seems too magical to be true. It seems especially known for its lush green landscape and mountainous terrain while also housing some gorgeous and spectacular beaches. When you’re not spending time in the outdoors, there are also plenty of other things that you can do, such as shop, enjoy the nightlife, and take in the culture. Here’s a list of the top things you should do while visiting the island of Alonnisos in Greece:

Spend Time at the Beach

There is no shortage of beaches to enjoy on the island of Alonnisos. One thing that sets these beaches apart from other locations in Greece is how peaceful they are. Although tourism is pretty healthy on this island, Alonnisos simply doesn’t get the numbers that the some of the other, more touristy places get. So, when visiting the beach, it is easy to escape, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Top beaches to visit include Agios Dimitrios Beach, Leftos Gialos Beach, Chrisi Milia Beach, and the Roussoum Gialos Beach. Each has a charm all its own so if you have time, you might want to consider trying all of them!

Visit a Museum

Greece has such a long history, you don’t need to go far in order to find a museum that will help you learn about this history. On Alonnisos, consider visiting the Alonnisos Museum. Although it is fairly small, it does give a fascinating overview as to the history and culture of the island. There are many artifacts here to take in, so don’t let the small size fool you – there is a lot here to learn. You want to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy it. You’ll also want to visit the Folklore Museum of Northern Sporades, which will also give you a glimpse into the culture of the island and of Greece in General.

Enjoy the National Marine Park

Since the island is known for its scenery, you won’t want to miss the National Marine Park! The scenery here will be a highlight of the trip, and if you’re lucky, you’ll also see plenty of marine life. If you want to see the park from a different angle, consider renting a boat or hiring a guide to show you around. This is also an excellent location on the island for scuba diving and snorkeling. In fact, since the marine life is located underwater, you’ll want to do either of those activities in order to really take a peek.

There is a reason why Alonnisos is so peaceful – the island experienced a series of events that caused people to move away. In the 1950’s, vines that were imported from California for the wine industry were infected with an insect that wiped out the vines. Deprived of their livelihood, people moved. Shortly after that, the island was the home of a strong earthquake. Now that some time has passed, the population has increased somewhat. However, these events did contribute to making the island a peaceful place for visitors.

Rich in history and natural beauty, Alonissos is the northern most island in the Sporades group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. It is known for its rugged and rocky landscape with plenty of pine and olive trees. However, nowhere is the beauty of the island more prevalent than at its gorgeous beaches. Each of these beaches has its own character and are all worth visiting during your stay. Here’s more information:

Agios Dimitrios Beach

One of the best beaches on Alonissos according to the locals, Agios Dimitrios is on the east coast about 14 kilometers or 8.6 miles north of the main port and capital of the island, Patitiri. It is easy to get there by car or bus so it isn’t a remote or secluded beach, you’ll find everything you need there from sun beds and umbrellas for rent, to tavernas and cafes. The beach is a pebble beach, not sand and the water is crystal clear and refreshing. Close to the beach is the small fishing village of Kalamata where you can have a delicious seafood lunch.

Chrisi Milia Beach

Chrisi Milia Beach is only 5 kilometers, or 3 miles, away from Patitiri.  The word “chrisi” means golden and that describes the shining, golden sand you’ll find at this beautiful beach. There is plenty of natural shade here, provided by the pine trees that line the beach. There are tavernas close by for something to eat or drink. This is a perfect outing for people of all ages!

Glyfa Beach

Only a 20 minute drive by car or bus, Glyfa offers a more secluded and peaceful beach for visitors who are searching for a bit of quiet and privacy. Glyfa beach is close to the village of Steni Vala, up on a green hill with a great view of the sea below.

Megalos Mourtias Beach

Megakos Mourtias Beach is located on the southern coast of the island and is about 4 kilometers or 2.5 miles from Patitiri. This is a perfect beach to visit when the strong northern winds of summer are blowing. The natural shape of the bay protects swimmers and sunbathers. There are sun beds and umbrellas for rent, tavernas and cafes for refreshments. The beach consists of both sand and pebbles. It also great for families because of how the bay protects the swimmers.

Kokkinokastro Beach

Kokkinokastro means “red castle” and this beach takes its name from the red clay soil that provides a backdrop to the deep blue sea here. The beach is made up of colorful sand and there are sun beds and umbrellas available to rent as well as nearby tavernas for delicious, local food. It is easy to get to and only a 15-minute drive from the main port. This is the ideal spot to enjoy the gorgeous sand and Greek climate!

Votsi Beach

Probably the most romantic beach on Alonissos, Votsi is a quick drive from Patitiri. Votsi beach is tucked in a small harbor surrounded by white, marble walls and dotted with sail boats and fishing vessels. There are several tavernas where you can get a great meal or just relax with a drink. This makes it a convenient choice for those who want to do more than just lounge at the beach.

The Alonissos Museum is found on the Greek island of Alonissos. Only meters away from the island’s main port of Patitiri, the museum serves as a cultural touchstone of the surrounding area. They house a collection here that focuses on the daily life and culture of the people of Alonissos, including farming tools, oil presses, ornaments, and more. Here’s more information about this museum:

About the Alonissos Museum

Established in 2000, the Alonissos Museum is privately owned by Kostas and Angela Mavrikis. The museum is named after the island on which it sits, Alonissos, which is the easternmost island in the Greek Sporades island chain. As far as Greek islands go, it’s less commercialized than other tourist destinations. This makes Alonissos the perfect destination for travelers who love nature, beaches, and a quiet village atmosphere. The Alonissos Museum also educatesvisitors on the island’s rich, humble history.

The museum itself is housed inside of a four-story stone building that is instantly recognizable and visible from the beach at Patitiri. With an additional gift shop, conference room, and in-house cafe eatery, the Alonissos is the largest privately-owned museum in Greece. Exhibits about traditional warfare and pirates are among the museum’s permanent collection. The museum has also hosted seasonal exhibitions featuring contemporary artists.

Along with examples of local Greek artifacts, the museum houses a broad collection of vintage and antique cameras. The museum’s photography exhibit aims to educate the public on the history of photography before the digital age. Box cameras, miniature cameras, and dark room equipment are just some of the items that are displayed in this exhibit.

What to Do at the Alonissos Museum

The Alonissos Museum is located among the shops and cafes of Patitiri. For just a handful of euros, visitors can enjoy a few hours taking a self-guided tour through the history of the local area. The photography exhibit and museum gift shop are found on the ground floor, while the basement houses the museum’s “Alinossos at Work” exhibit. Upstairs, visitors can find the pirate artifact room and a special tribute to lives lost during both WWI and WWII.

Once visitors have completed their tour of the museum, they can enjoy refreshments at Cafe Molinas on the upper floor. The modest eatery is open during museum hours and features two outdoor terraces, both of which offer magnificent views of the harbor below.

Getting to the Alonissos Museum

The island of Alonissos doesn’t have an airport. Therefore, the best way to reach the museum is by ferry. From Athens, the fastest way to reach Alonissos is to drive three hours to Evoia, then take the ferry to Alonissos from there, which takes about two hours.

Alonissos also has frequent ferries to and from the surrounding islands. It’s a popular spot for day trippers visiting from the neighborhing islands of Skopelas and Skiathos, for example. Skiathos also has the closest airport to Alonissos. From Athens, the flight to Skiathos International Airport takes about 30 minutes.

Most ferries visiting Alonissos will arrive at its main port, Patitiri. The Alonissos Museum is within walking distance of the harbor.

Taking the extra step to get to his museum is well worth your effort. It is a great please to get a nice overview of the history and culture of the islands.

It also has many tavernas nearby where you can enjoy fresh seafood or other delicious dishes for lunch or dinner after spending quality time at the beach relaxing by the water’s edge with your favorite book in hand.

Once you arrive at Chrisi Milia, there are many activities that you can do. You can spend a whole day sunbathing on the beautiful sandy beach, or if it is too hot out, then go for a refreshing swim in the calm waters of the sea to refresh yourself. If you need some relaxation before lunchtime hits, head over to one of the nearby tavernas so that they can serve up delicious food while enjoying a fantastic view of Alonissos’ lush green mountains surrounding this gorgeous island paradise.

Getting to Chrisi Milia Beach

If you are taking a ferry to Alonissos, Chrisi Milia is located on the island’s south side. Once you arrive at Volimes, head westwards towards Spartinos beach until you see some signs for Chris Milia pointing in that direction. It’s about 15 minutes by car from Volimes, but if you don’t have your transportation, there are taxis available, which can take you directly to this incredible spot! If it isn’t peak season, parking might also be an option near the beach, so keep that in mind.

The bus stop that serves as a connection point between Volimes and Loutra Alonissos has only one sign indicating it. This bus stop isn’t labeled “Volimes” but instead reads “Alonissos.” If you are standing at this location facing away from town (i.e., looking towards Portaria), Chrisi Milia will be to your left after about 15 minutes of walking along the road. There are several signs on the way pointing in its direction. The bus stop is in front of a small taverna and mini-market, which you will see on your left when coming from Volimes (the side facing Loutra Alonissos).

There’s only one sign at the point where the road splits between Volimes and Loutra Alonissos – this single sign points to both places. If you’re standing at the spot indicated by this map, Chrisi Milia isn’t too far away, but if for some reason you feel lost, ask any local around here about “Chris Milia” or simply “Milia.” They’ll know what place you are talking about!

Chrisi Milia Beach is a beautiful place to visit which has many nearby options for you to choose from regarding dining and recreation. If you are going to see the Greek Islands, this is one of the most beautiful locations.

A remote, rugged island with a long tradition of hospitality, Alonissos is the largest of the Northern Sporades islands in Greece. There are many caves and beaches to explore around Agios Dimitrios Beach – all stunning in their way. Roughly one-third of the beach is clothing-optional, making this a popular destination for people looking for an idyllic Greek getaway.

About Agios Dimitrios Beach

Agios Dimitrios Beach is part of Alonissos National Marine Park, with a special status as an important ecological and environmental area. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag certifications since 1986. -The beautiful landscape around Agios Dimitrios makes it one of the most popular beaches on Alonissos Island; families love spending time here during their holidays in Greece because there are lots to see and do for all ages.

The beach has an avalanche of facilities, including a bar, which best beverages can be appreciated during the high season when most vacationers arrive at Agios Dimitrios. When coming from Patitiri, the island’s capital, the excursion takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes,

In the south region of the beach are likewise sunbeds for leasing, yet it is essential to be watchful with regards to the imps. The north part is calmer, albeit once in a while, the boats store tar or oil on the waters of this space. Be that as it may, a happy time can be spent on this oceanside, whether it comes to north or south.

What to Do at Agios Dimitrios Beach

Blue Cave (the official name is Agios Dimitrios Cave) is a great place to visit, and it’s right by this beach. This natural phenomenon can be seen from the coastline, or you could opt for an excursion that will take you inside the cave itself (which we recommend).

One of Alonissos’ most well-known beaches, Pahia Ammos Beach, which means ‘white sand,’ is only around 11km away from Agios Dimitrios Beach. If you feel like escaping crowds altogether, drive further south along the pristine coastline until you reach Panormos Bay. Here there are no sunbeds, so bring your own if needed but otherwise, relax in peace with your favorite book while enjoying views out towards Turkey on one side and the setting sun on the other.

It is a good idea to spend some time in Patitiri while visiting Agios Dimitrios Beach – it’s only about a 15-minute walk from Chora, Alonissos’ capital city. You can also take your car or rent one if you prefer an even shorter journey. The tiny streets of this mountain village have many unique shops selling local products such as honey, delicious jams made by hand at small family-run farms located around the island, traditional artisanal foodstuffs including cheeses, wines, and much more besides! Stroll through pretty alleys filled with flowers before taking yourself off for lunch somewhere with views over the harbor, which will give you another perspective on life on Alonissos.

Getting to Agios Dimitrios Beach

The quickest way to get here is by car, which takes around 15 minutes from the capital, Patitiri. If you decide not to hire a vehicle, some buses run every half an hour in high season (every one or two hours during low season), although these can be somewhat unreliable, so it’s best to check times in advance if possible. Journey time on a bus takes between 30 and 45 minutes depending on where you board and alight, along with how many stops other passengers ask for before your visit. You can also take a taxi to get to the beach.

In conclusion, Agios Dimitrios Beach is a beautiful, family-friendly beach. This is a great place to visit during your holiday in Greece. Blue Cave and Pahia Ammos Beach are nearby, and Patitiri has lots of shops selling local produce.
