Written by in , Comments Off on What to Do in Alonnisos, Greece

View from the old village (Chora) of Alonissos island, Northern Sporades, Aegean sea, Greece, EuropeAlonnisos is one of those idyllic Greek islands that seems too magical to be true. It seems especially known for its lush green landscape and mountainous terrain while also housing some gorgeous and spectacular beaches. When you’re not spending time in the outdoors, there are also plenty of other things that you can do, such as shop, enjoy the nightlife, and take in the culture. Here’s a list of the top things you should do while visiting the island of Alonnisos in Greece:

Spend Time at the Beach

There is no shortage of beaches to enjoy on the island of Alonnisos. One thing that sets these beaches apart from other locations in Greece is how peaceful they are. Although tourism is pretty healthy on this island, Alonnisos simply doesn’t get the numbers that the some of the other, more touristy places get. So, when visiting the beach, it is easy to escape, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Top beaches to visit include Agios Dimitrios Beach, Leftos Gialos Beach, Chrisi Milia Beach, and the Roussoum Gialos Beach. Each has a charm all its own so if you have time, you might want to consider trying all of them!

Visit a Museum

Greece has such a long history, you don’t need to go far in order to find a museum that will help you learn about this history. On Alonnisos, consider visiting the Alonnisos Museum. Although it is fairly small, it does give a fascinating overview as to the history and culture of the island. There are many artifacts here to take in, so don’t let the small size fool you – there is a lot here to learn. You want to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy it. You’ll also want to visit the Folklore Museum of Northern Sporades, which will also give you a glimpse into the culture of the island and of Greece in General.

Enjoy the National Marine Park

Since the island is known for its scenery, you won’t want to miss the National Marine Park! The scenery here will be a highlight of the trip, and if you’re lucky, you’ll also see plenty of marine life. If you want to see the park from a different angle, consider renting a boat or hiring a guide to show you around. This is also an excellent location on the island for scuba diving and snorkeling. In fact, since the marine life is located underwater, you’ll want to do either of those activities in order to really take a peek.

There is a reason why Alonnisos is so peaceful – the island experienced a series of events that caused people to move away. In the 1950’s, vines that were imported from California for the wine industry were infected with an insect that wiped out the vines. Deprived of their livelihood, people moved. Shortly after that, the island was the home of a strong earthquake. Now that some time has passed, the population has increased somewhat. However, these events did contribute to making the island a peaceful place for visitors.
