Lagkada, Chios Island, Greece

Chios is an island in the Aegean Sea in Greece that is particularly known for its hospitality. Since it is much small than some of the other tourist destinations in Greece, locals are more than eager to make sure their visitors see the place as they do. To them, Chios is more than just their home. It’s a place that offers respite from the cares of the world. They know what visitors soon find out – that the island is about more than just its history and stunning scenery. It’s about how you feel not only while there, but also long after you’ve gone home.

Visit a Medieval City

The old medieval city of Mesta is definitely worth your time! On the one hand, it’s fairly typical of cities you’d find throughout Europe. Flanked by a city wall, it was clearly built to ward off potential invaders. However, Mesta is so much more than that. It’s also a beautiful Greek town that has many elements of a traditional Greek village. Be sure to take plenty of photographs will here because it isn’t often that you have the chance to glimpse such a well-preserved, historical place.

Relax at the Beach

While there is certainly no shortage of beaches scattered throughout Greece, the ones found on Chios are truly special. Make sure to visit the Mavra Volia, which constantly offers guests a unique experience, especially since the “sand” is actually black, volcanic pebbles. Other beaches to visit include Agia Fontina Beach, Emporios Beach and Karfas Beach. In addition to sunbathing and taking a dip in the water, it’s also possible to enjoy water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling while on Chios.

Experience Orthodox Christianity

The Orthodox Christian religion is an important element of life in Greece, and Chios is no exception. Aside from stopping in on some of the churches that you see scattered throughout the island, there’s also a monastery that people love to visit. The Nea Moni Monastery is not only a beautiful place to visit to experience Greek Orthodoxy, it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Before you make the trip to this monastery, however, make sure it’s actually open for visitors. Others, you won’t be able to enter.

Visit an Old Castle

During your stay in Chios Town, you won’t want to miss the old castle! This is an historic site that stands as a reminder of the island’s fairly turbulent past. While it was originally constructed to help ward against invasions, today it is a nice architectural landmark that attracts tourists and locals alike. Take some time to walk around near the fortress, and be sure to take plenty of pictures!

Enjoy the Cuisine

One thing that Greece is famous for is its cuisine, and Chios is no exception. The food on this island is ultra fresh, and most restaurants and tavernas opt to serve food that was grown or caught locally. Be sure to eat some local seafood, fresh Greek salads, and loukoumades, a type of Greek fried donut that is a particular local specialty.

Located on the northern side of the town center, the Castle of Chios is an imposing figure. Porta Maggiore, the main entrance of the castle, was constructed by the Venetians in 1694. Near the main entrance of the castle is Giustiniani Palace, an impressive building. The palace was built by the Genoese to house the headquarters of the administration. Today, cultural events are held there. The dark Dungeon is another building from the Genoese. It was used as a prison for seventy Chiots before they were executed. Other buildings within the Castle of Chios include the Ottoman Baths, the Cold Fountain, and the Tower of Koulas.

Beach of Mavra Volia

The beautiful beach of Mavra Volia is located on the northern side of the island near the village of Emporio. If you’re going to see only one beach while in Chios, Greece, Mavra Volia should be it. This long beach features black pebbles that were created by the volcanic eruption of that now dormant volcano of Psaronas. Mavro Volia Beach is actually two beaches. You can either swim to the other beach or take a path that goes over a small cliff. You will find places to get refreshments on the beach as well as showers and change rooms. For pilgrims who wish to stay overnight at the monastery, the cells of the monastery are available.

The island of Chios is a sought after place that attracts people from all over the world. There is a lot to do here despite the fact that it is one of the smaller islands. One of the things you can do while here is to visit some of the monasteries. Here is more information about that:

New Monastery of Chios

The New Monastery of Chios is actually one of the oldest monasteries in the country of Greece and is declared as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The New Monastery of Chios is located in the central region of Chios Island. The monastery was founded in the 11th century by Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos. He founded the New Monastery of Chios to repay three monks of Chios for their predication of his banishment to Lesvos would be temporary and he would eventually be the emperor.

The monastery would become one of the wealthiest monasteries throughout the Aegean at least until the 1822 Massacre of Chios by the Ottomans. The New Monastery of Chios is made up of the main church, two smaller churches, and the Ecclesiastical Museum of the monastery. There is also the dining area and quarters of the monks. The monastery is especially known for its mosaics, which you will no doubt be in awe of.

Monastery of Myrsinidiou

Located at the northern side of the village of Vrontados, near Daskalopetra and Ormos Lo, is the Monastery of Myrsinidiou. The monastery sits at an altitude of 40 meters. The Monastery of Myrsinidiou was founded in 1897 by a monk named Christopher Seremelis. There are now about five residents of the monastery. The Monastery of Myrsinidiou played a role during the Second World War when it offered charitable services during the German occupation. The monastery is dedicated to Virgin Myrtidiotissa.

Monastery of Moundon

Located close to the village of Diefha, the Monastery of Moundon is a historic monastery complex that was considered the most important on the island of Chios after that of the New Monastery of Chios. The Monastery of Moundon was destroyed by the Ottomans and is deserted today. The monastery complex consists of the monk cells, the chapels, and the domed portico. The frescoes that were destroyed were repaired in 1849 by a monk. Visiting the Monastery of Moundon will require that you get the keys from the village of Diephas.

Church of Megalos Taxirhis

The Church of Megalos Taxirhis is located at the center of Mesta Village. The church was built on the foundations of a castle tower that once stood there. The temple of the church is known for its wood carvings and ancient hagiographics. The pebbled courtyard is something to admire, as is bell tower that was made from stone that came from Thymiana Village. The Church of Megalos Taxirhis is thought to be the largest church on the island of Chios.

The tower was abandoned after the withdrawal of the Genoese and its only inhabitants after that were snakes and crows. The villagers demolished the tower in 1958 as they thoughts the snakes and crows were evil omens. They would rebuild the church, which took ten years. When visiting the church, you will be treated to authentic examples of folklore architecture.

Anavatos is a small village in the region of Chios, Greece. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. Its history is marked with many battles between Turks and Christians, pirates seeking refuge from storms, armies passing through on their way to battle in Gallipoli or Constantinople. Nowadays, it can be found at the heart of one of Chios’ largest olive oil-producing regions – Lithari Valley. With so much beauty around us, it’s hard not to fall in love with this place.

About Anavatos Village

The village of Anavatos is located in the northern part of Chios, Greece’s main island. On both sides of the village, there are olive groves considered some of the best in Greece. They have been awarded many times for their high quality and organoleptic properties.

In Anavatos, you will find yourself wandering from one beautiful beach to another. There are always new places to discover with each visit, like the small beaches of Lia and Tzortzi. If you walk around, you will find rustic areas away from the crowd where you can enjoy your time at peace. You can also discover traditional mills (windmills) that turn around in search of wind, something that is really rare nowadays.

What to Do at Anavatos Village

Anavatos is a favorite spot for many tourists to Chios. People come here to enjoy the beauty of the beaches, relax in smaller resorts away from the bigger crowd, and have picnics amongst the olive trees, which are plentiful throughout this area. For those who want to know more about olive oil production, some tours take you through the process and show you the reality of producing olive oil. They also sell it at a reduced price so you can take some home as a gift for friends and family. Visitors can also learn about other local products.

The village is close to many interesting places, such as Vrontados, where giant sand dunes reach up to 40m in height. No cars or roads pass through these dunes, making it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the crowds. Another place of interest is Lekhones, a town dating back to 3000 BC where you can walk around and admire both the houses and churches from the 18th century. The area has a network of paths that connect Anavatos with other interesting places in the area, like traditional settlements which have been passed down for generations.

Getting to Anavatos Village

The best way to get to Anavatos is by rental car. There are also buses that run regularly from Chios town. It is a beautiful drive taking you through the countryside and olive groves before reaching up into the hills of Anavatos with its stunning views. Allow for about 1 hour 30 minutes driving time from Chios town.

As you get onto the national road that links Chios town, there are signs for Anavatos. There used to be a toll on the right-hand side of this road, but The National Road Company has removed it, so you can drive straight up to the village without stopping at any gates.

Anavatos is a lovely village to visit if you want to experience real Greece. The people are friendly, there is no big crowd, and the area’s beauty is simply breathtaking. Chios is now gaining a reputation with visitors for being a place where history lives on today in many ways, offering a great holiday destination for those looking for an authentic Greek island.

Hidden on the eastern Greek island of Chios sits Pyrgi, a charming Medieval town often referred to as the “Painted Village.” Located about 15 miles south of the island’s capital Khios, Pyrgi’s quaint streets are flooded with stone homes characterized by their geometric gray and white designs, called Xysta.

Built prior to the 10th century, this stunning village is thought to be the home of Christopher Columbus according to some historians who trace his lineage to a Genoese Pyrgi family. With its undeniable beauty and history, Pyrgi is a village in Greece that travelers have visited for centuries.

About Pyrgi Village

The ancient town of Pyrgi is only a little over 300 feet above sea level in the North Aegean region of Greece. The population hovers under 2,000 residents but visitors regularly come to the village to see its stunning architectural style homes painted in the striking gray and white that some liken to Italian graffiti. Home to many churches and monuments of importance to the country, Pyrgi is a beautiful village that is easily walkable for visitors and locals alike.

One of the Mastic villages, Pyrgi is comprised of homes that are built tightly together and surrounded by a thick wall, all out of sight of the sea to aid in security from potential sea-faring conquerors. Inside these fortresses built by the Genovese, families could safely grow and harvest the valuable mastic tree over the years, and a handful of these Mastic villages remain in Greece.

Visitors to the charming village will see that modern life here looks much like it did centuries ago with the picturesque narrow stone-paved walkways lined with balconies overflowing with flowers weaving around ancient churches and homes noted for their medieval architecture.

What to do at Pyrgi Village

Visitors in Pyrgi will enjoy strolling through the village, soaking in the remarkably well-preserved homes and Italianate painted designs on their facades. Wandering through the streets, visitors can take in the wonderfully preserved murals on walls and homes, reflecting the medieval character of the town. Small shops and cafes are also found in the main walkways of the village, and visitors can integrate easily into the slow pace of this sleepy Greek village.

Be sure to snag a cup of Mastic coffee here at a café to enjoy while exploring the village. Sightseeing in Pyrgi revolves around the beautiful churches found here, and usually starts with a visit to the Agioi Apostoli (Holy Apostles) temple, a gorgeous church designed in the Byzantine style constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries. Another church to visit is the Virgin’s Assumption, built in 1694, as well as the 1680’s Church of Taxiarchis.

Getting to Pyrgi

Visitors can reach Pyrgi from the Greek mainland by taking a ferry to the island of Chios. To reach Pyrgi, the Rafina-Chios ferry line connects Rafina, just east of Athens, to the island. From the main port of Chios, visitors will then take a short 15-mile drive to the southern town of Pyrgi.

The charming village of Pyrgi is full of medieval architecture and historic touches that make it one of the places visitors should not miss when visiting Greece. As a gorgeous example of the Mastic villages in the North Aegean region of Greece, Pyrgi is an excellent location to experience a uniquely beautiful and historical part of Greek culture.

Greek Village of Pyrgi, on ChiosBecause Chios sees fewer visitors than better-known Greek islands, tourists can find great hospitality and opportunities for interaction with friendly inhabitants and Chian culture. The locals take great pride in their history, traditions, and livelihood.

Chios Town is the busy commercial main port and capital of Chios, located on its east coast across from Turkey. Half of the island’s population lives here. It’s not much to look at during the day, since the buildings are mostly unattractive and outdated, but it’s much more beautiful at night, by the water and under the stars.

At the Bazaar District merchants sell everything from local mastic gum, bread, and kitchen utensils. Chios is significant in history as the ancestral home of shipping barons and The Chios Maritime Museum showcases shop models and portraits of vessels that have belonged to Chios owners over time. It highlights the ships that were constructed during World War II that contributed to the beginning of Greece’s shipping industry.

The Old Quarter features old Muslim and Jewish neighborhoods full of decaying monuments, fountains, baths, and mosques. The Kambos District just south of Chios Town is a fertile plain of tangerine, lemon, and orange groves. It’s the inspiration for the Citrus Museum, which showcases the history of citrus products on the island. Its shop and café sell citrus-inspired treats. In Greek the museum is called “the aroma of memories”. If you are looking for a beach, the nearest beach resort is Karfas, south of Chios Town, which gets very busy during the summer months.

Hidden among the olive groves is the island’s most important monastery, the 11th century Nea Moni. It was built where three monks found an icon of the Virgin and is one of the finest displays of mosaic art anywhere. The design of the Nea Moni, a single square space covered by a dome, is rarely seen in Greece. Inside the grounds are an ancient refectory, a vaulted cistern, a chapel filled with victims’ bones from the massacre at Chios, and a large clock still keeping Byzantine time.

Pirgi, in southern Chios, is the largest of the mastic villages that were built to defend residents from pirate attacks. Today the village depends on sales of mastic gum and tourism. Pirgi’s primary appeal is its aesthetics. Many buildings are stenciled top to bottom in patterns of animals, flowers, and geometric designs. More than 50 churches can be found in this village.

Mesta is the best preserved of the mastic villages, which sits inside a system of 3 foot thick walls as protection. Many art galleries and boutiques can be found here. The Church of Megas Taxiarchis, one of the largest and wealthiest churches in Greece, commands the main square.
