Visit the Holocaust Monument

The Holocaust Monument is located on a hill above Kalavrita. The town of Kalavrita suffered greatly during the holocaust. In October of 1943, the German Operation Kalavrita began when Greek resistance forces won the Nazi troops in a battle in a nearby village.

Eighty German soldiers were captured and the Nazi forces demanded the prisoners be released. They threatened that if they were not released, residents of nearby villages would be executes. The resistance stood strong and did not cave to the threats. On December 8th, German troops entered and destroyed Kerpini Village and Pogi Village and killed all the men. When this happened, the Greek forces executed the German prisoners, with only one escaping. Over the coming days, more atrocities would occur. The monument honors the people who died during the awful event.

There is also the Holocaust Museum that is housed in the school where the women and children had been locked up. The museum showcases items such as photographs, old newspapers, documents, and objects left from the Nazi occupation. The museum is located in the central square of the town.

Explore the Gorge of Vouraikos

The 40 km long Vouraikos River flows between the west side of Mount Helmos and the east side of Mount Erimanthos.The river creates a deep gorge known as the Gorge of Vouraikos. Mythology says that Hercules was in love with Vourna, who was the daughter of Eliki and Nefeligeretes. Vourna lived in the sea and Hercules opened the passage in order to reach her. The gorge is an impressive sight to see for its beauty, but it is also a wonderful place to hike and explore the forests, flora, and fauna. The waterfalls at the gorge are breathtaking. The Monastery of Mega Spileo

Located just 10 km from the town of Kalavrita, is the Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo. The monastery is built on the slopes of a rocky hill. It is located 924 meters up, which provides an amazing view when you’re on the balcony. The style is reminisent of a fortress and is eight floors high. The Monastery of Mega Spileo was built by two brothers named Theodore and Symeon in 362 AD.

This particular spot was chosen because a shepherd girl had found an icon of the Virgin Mary inside a cave. Throughout the years, the monastery has been burned and otherwise damaged and rebuilt a few times. Today, the monastery is still an impressive structure. There is a 17th century church on site that has mosaic floors and wonderful frescos.

The Monastery of Agia Lavra

Constructed in 961 BC, the Monastery of Agia Lavra is found at an altitude of 960 meters, which offers amazing views of the river valley of Vouraikos. Over the years the monastery has been rebuilt at least three times due to attacks and fires. The monastery you see today was built with donations of pilgrims and support of the state. The Monastery of Agia Lavra is one of the oldest in the Peloponnese. It is located on Chelmos Mountain, which is sometimes described as the birthplace of modern Greece. At the monastery’s museum you can view items such as books, icons, sacred vessels, and the Gospel of Tsarina Catherine II of Russia.

The Monastery of Panagia Makellaria

Established in 532 AD, the Monastery of Panagia Makellaria is found near the village of Lapanagi and 30 km from the town of Kalavrita. It was originally called the Monastery of Panagia Lithostrotiotissa meaning “Virgin Mary of the Stones.” After the monastery was burnt down by the Ottomans in 1458, it was renamed Makellaria from the word makelio, which means “destruction.” Some of the exhibits you can see at the monastery include weapons from the fighters of the Greek Revolution and the holy icon of the Virgin Mary. The icon of the Virgin Mary is set on a wooden carved screen and its eyes appear to follow you wherever you go.

The Church of Panagia Plataniotissa

Located 30 km from Kalavrita, the Church of Panagia Plataniotissa is a site you will not want to miss. This church was constructed in the cavity of three large plane trees, which came together to form one large plane tree. A small temple with two columns form the beautiful gate of this unique church.

Information About Mount Athos

Mount Athos is both a peninsula and a mountain, located in Macedonia, which is in the northeastern part of Greece. As you can see based on the photograph here of the Simonos Petras Monastery, which is one of the twenty monasteries located on the Holy Mountain, there are some stunning views here on the mountain. There is a lot of lore surrounding the initial presence of Christianity on this mountain, and the site had also been a prominant place in Greek mythology. However, it wasn’t until the Byzantine Era that the first monasteries were built here.

It is also home to twenty monasteries, which house thousands of practicing Orthodox Cbristian monks not only from Greece, but who come from all over the world. It is also considered an autonomous polity, or autonomous state, which falls under the Greek Republic. It is officially referred to as the Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain. Beecause of their autonomous status, they are able to control the flow of goods that come into the area, as well as maintain strict standards as to who can enter.

Women Aren’t Allowed

Only men are permitted to visit the Holy Mountain. The reason for this is that all the monks that are living in monasteries on the mountain have taken a vow of celibacy. They have determined that if women were allowed on the mountain, this would distract them from their celibacy and therefore, from their monastic life as a whole. There have been some documented incidents of women disgusing themselves as men. This behavior has been looked at as scandalous and it definitely violates their policies.

Visiting Mount Athos

Even if you aren’t a woman, permission still needs to be granted in order for you to be able to visit the Holy Mountain. However, if you’re interested in a peaceful religious retreat, it’s worth the effort to obtain that permission. For the most part, however, visitors to the mountain have to be monks or others who are associated with Christianity, with preference given to Orthodox Christians. Still, if you are able to meet the requirements for visiting here, it will be an unforgettable trip.

It isn’t possible to simply visit Mount Athos in the same way that you would other tourist sites in Greece. However, if you are given the chance to visit here, it is worth it. You will be treated to some of the best views in Greece, as well as be given a chance to experience a true Orthodox Christian pilgrimage.
