The relatively untouched island of Anafi is located in the waters near Santorini. It has a laid-back vibe and is a quiet place. It has all the beauty of a Greek island without the crowds that places like Santorini and Mykonos see. One of the biggest selling points of a trip to Anafi is its stunning beach landscape, offering visitors an oasis of fun in the sun. Here are six of the best beaches to put on your trip itinerary when visiting Anafi. Here’s more information

Kleisidi Beach

Sparkling waters and tamarisk trees highlight Kleisdi Beach. Located at the southern tip of the island, Kleisdi is close to the main port of Agios Nikolaos. You can reach this beach with just a 20-minute stroll from the port. Because of its proximity to the port, it is no surprise that Kleisdi is the choice for many tourists looking to enjoy the amenities and conveniences of the Chora Village.

Roukounas Beach

Boasting a length of approximately 300 meters, Roukounas Beach is one of the longest beaches on Anifa. Guests will find a respite from the searing sun of the Mediterranean with the many tamarisks trees that dot the landscape of this stretch of sand. Camping is allowed at this beach, making it a popular destination for people who want to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Greek islands.

Agios Nikolaos Beach

As the only port on the island, Agios Nikolaos is situated within two towering cliffs with a bay. Only a few meters from the port, you will find the beach of Agios Nikolaos. While the beach is not large in scope, it does offer a few amenities nearby such as a cafeteria and a few lively taverns. You will also find rooms to rent if you want to set up your home base here.

Katsouni Beach

If you are looking for a secluded beach to relax and rejuvenate, look no further than Katsouni Beach. This charming pebble beach features a narrow shore paired with a rocky beach. The barren surroundings make you feel as if you are miles away from civilization. You can access this remote beach by boat or it is about a 30-minute walk from Chora Village.

Agios Anargyri Beach

Situated on the eastern side of Anafi, Agios Anargyri Beach is named after the church of Agioi Anargyroi. The soft sandy beach is perfectly juxtaposed with the stunning crystal waters. Visitors may arrive at the beach via boat or you can walk from the ancient temple of Apollo. Agios Anaygryi is the perfect place to watch the sun sparkle over the Aegean Sea.

Agios Ioannis Beach

While visiting the chapel of Agios Ioannis (Saint John), be sure to check out the beach of the same name. Most people arrive by boat or make the visit part of a day hike. A beautiful hiking path connects Roukounas Beach to Agios Ioannis Beach and ends at the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi.

Regardless of the beach that you choose to enjoy on Anafi, you will do so with the confidence of knowing that you will immediately feel transported to a magical island paradise.

Anafi, Greece is a small, almost triangular-shaped island in the Cyclades. The population of permanent residents of the island is small. Anafi is still mostly a well-kept secret. Hora, the island’s capital, is full of Cycladic architecture. There are whitewashed houses and flowery courtyards.

The charming labyrinth alleys make for interesting walks. It seems that no matter where you are on the island, you can see the sea. The island of Anafi is home to beaches, steep cliffs, some attractions you won’t want to miss.

Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa

Located on a hill of Kalamos Rock is the Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa. The old monastery is small, single-roomed, and domed. The monastery is an important religious monument of the island of Anafi. The Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa is found at 480 meters and offers a wonderful view of the Aegean Sea.

Getting to the monastery can be a little difficult. There is a hiking path from the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi. The hike takes approximately 90 minutes. The hiking path, in additon to the monastery itself, is popular in Anafi and definitely worth the trip.

Temple of Apollo Aiglitis

The Temple of Apollo Aiglitis can be found in the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi. You can view remnants of the ancient temple that was dedicated to Apollo. High sections of the temple and encosure walls are preserved to this day. The enclosure is made of large rocks built in a row. Legend says the temple was built by the Argonauts to honor Apollo for his help.

The Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi is the main monastery of the island of Anafi. The monastery was built on the foundations of the Temple of Apollo. In the monastery you can view a 19th century wood carved iconostasis. The location of the Temple of Apollo and monastery is a beautiful spot, which is why there is a complex of buildings dedicated to worship there.

Cave of Drakontospilo

Located at the northern part of the Rock of Kalamos is the Cave of Drakontospilo, also known as Dragons Cave. The cave is only accessible through a rough path, but it is well worth the trip. The cave features golden-green deposits that are created from water dripping on the walls, natural ponds, columns, and stalactites that continue to be formed to this day. Residents of Anafi Island believe that the interior of the cave leads through Kalamos and out to another smaller cave of the northern part of the rock.

Rock of Kalamos

The tall monolithic rock known as the Rock of Kalamos, or Mount Kalamos, is a natural monument on the easter side of the island. The Rock of Kalamos is the second highest rock in the Mediterranean. At the highest point of the rock is the abandoned monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa. The Rock of Kalamos has been designated an important area for birds. Roukounas Beach

Roukounas Beach is one of the longest beaches on Anafi Island, with a coastline of 300 meters long. This beach is also accessible to campers who will gather there especially during the summer. Like most of the beaches on the island of Anafi, Agios Nikolaos is an unorganized beach, but thanks to its proximity to the port, there is access to amenities. There are some taverns nearby as well as a cafeteria and rooms to rent if you want to extend your stay in the area.

Katsouni Beach

Katsouni Beach is a secluded, nudist friendly beach that is found 2 km south of Chora. The rocky beach features a narrow shore and crystal water. If you’re looking for privacy and a quiet, relaxing time spent at the beach, Katsouni is for you. You can get to the beach on foot or by boat from the port. The walk from Chora takes about 30 minutes, so you’ll enjoy a lot of scenery along the way.

These are just a few of the many beaches you will find on the island of Anafi. Whichever you decide to spend time at, you won’t be disappointed.

AnafiotikaAnafiotika is a lovely, quirky hidden neighborhood within the Plaka neighborhood of Athens, located beneath the northern slopes of the Acropolis. It’s one of the oldest settlements in Athens and is a nice escape from the busy city streets.

Anafiotika was built and colonized in the 19th century by tradesmen from the Cycladic island of Anafi. They were brought to Athens after the War of Independence to build King Otto’s palace. Because they missed home so much, they decided to re-create it and called this new neighborhood Anafiotika or “little Anafi”. Homes are all whitewashed, island-style and dome-topped within a maze of tiny passageways. The island craftsmen ignored the decree declaring the area an archaeological zone and built their homes anyway. They took advantage of an Ottoman law that stated that if you could put up a structure between sunset and sunrise, the property was yours and the authorities could not tear it down.

Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the narrow paths of Anafiotika that are lined with flowers. The typical Cycladic village atmosphere makes it seem as if the big city is far away. Whitewashed houses with pots of basil on the windowsills and wandering cats are common sights to be seen. It’s a transplanted Cycladic world where posters of the sandy beaches of Anafi can be found hanging throughout the tiny village. Beautiful geraniums and marigolds can be found on the balconies and rooftops of these buildings providing a serenity that can’t be found in modern day Athens.

Two 17th century churches bound Anafiotika. Agios Georgios tou Petrou can be found to the east. It has a tiny courtyard filled with flowers. Agios Symeon can be found to the west. It contains a copy of a miraculous icon originally brought from Anafi. Residents of Anafiotika in typical Cycladic style rebuilt both of these churches in the 19th century.

Many descendants of the original Anafi islanders still live in Anafiotika where today, only 45 houses remain in the area. However, it is slowly becoming a place for wealthy locals that are looking to own a cottage with an island feel in the big city.

Anafiotika is a popular destination for tourists and serves as a nice escape from the busy city streets of Athens, but it hasn’t lost its charm to tourism yet. Very few restaurants or souvenir shops can be found in this tiny neighborhood. The neighborhood is at its busiest during high tourist season. If you would prefer to have more space as you explore, it’s best to visit during the winter or early spring. Comfortable shoes are a must while wandering the streets of Anafiotika. The terrain is very uneven and can sometimes be slippery depending on weather conditions. Anafiotika is perfect for people looking to have an adventure and get lost in the scenery, since the streets don’t have names making maps or planning ahead somewhat useless.
