The Cave of Antiparos is located 8 km from Chora (Antiparos Town). The cave is also known as the Cave of Agios Ioannis Church. The Cave of Antiparos is 85 meters deep and the only vertical cave in Europe. It is also thought to be the oldest cave in Europe. It features the oldest stalactite in Europe at 45 million years old. The cave once served as a worship and refugee center.

The cave of Antiparos also has archaeological importance due to the engraved inscriptions that are found on the walls of the cave. Audio tours of the cave are available in both English and Greek. It’s a good idea to bring your own water as there are no shops near the cave and after the 411 step ascent. The area of the Cave of Antiparos, including the 411 cement steps, were renovated in 2009.

While you’re in the area, be sure to visit the Church of Agios Ioannis Spiliotis, which is located at the entrance of the Cave of Antiparos. The church is accessible through a hiking route that starts at the settlement of Agios Georgios.

Enjoy the Foods, Drinks, and Products of Antiparos

The local wine and unaged brandy called tsipouro will also thrill your taste buds. Local island specialties include wild rabbit stew, grilled octopus, and sweet ravioli. For breakfast and coffee, you can head to Margarita or Sifneiko Cafe in Chora. If you’re relaxing at Apantima Beach, you can stop by the Beach House for coffee. If you’re craving souvlaki, Oikogeniako in Hora is a good choice. You’ll find varied cuisine around the island of Antiparos, Greece.

Spend Time Outdoors in Antiparos

The moment you step off the ferry on Antiparos island in Greece, it is easy to believe that you entered another time and place. This island is profoundly serene, yet because it’s so close to the island of Paros, there still seems to be a healthy crowd of people coming and going from the island. One of the highlights of this island is to visit one of its many beaches, each having its own unique charm. Here’s an overview of the best beaches you can find on this island:

Glifa Beach

Glifa Beach is in a popular spot, especially during peak tourist season. However, since the island is a bit off the beaten track, it never seems to get too busy. It is located 6 kilometers from the main town, but there are also some area attractions, here. It is also the place to go if you want an “unspoiled” beach. Since it is in a fairly rural setting, this offers a great chance to enjoy a beach in a peaceful way. However, there are no facilities located directly at the beach so you’ll need to bring everything you’ll need for the outing. There are plenty of hotels and tavernas in the area, though, so you can easily find something to do afterwards.

Panagia Beach

If you want to visit a beach that has stunning views, you won’t want to miss Panagia Beach! Since it is only 1 kilometer from the main town, it is also one of the busiest beaches on the island since it is easily accessible. However, you do need to pass by two other beaches in order to get here, which means that the crowds aren’t bad as they could be. The water here is especially warm and is a great spot if you love to swim. There’s also a lot of shade here.

Psaralyki Beach

There are actually two beaches here, which means that guests have plenty of choices once they arrive. Since these beaches are only a ten-minute walk from the main town, they’re the busiest on the island. They’re also the most built up, with plenty of facilities to make life easier for beachgoers. There are sun beds and umbrellas here to rent as well as places nearby to eat. Although the party scene on this island isn’t dramatic, there are still some clubs on the beach. However, they aren’t so imposing as to be a turn off for families – this beach is actually great for everyone.

Vathis Volos Beach

This beach is about 12 kilometers from the main town, which means that it doesn’t get a lot of traffic. However, it is worth the trip since this beach is so picturesque! There are also a lot of tavernas here, and those who do make the trek do so because they know how clean and beautiful the waters are.

As you can see, Antiparos has some truly amazing beaches. If you’re staying on the island for an extended period, you’ll have plenty of time to visit all of them and then maybe even revisit your favorites! For those who love the outdoors, Antiparos is an ideal spot.

Antiparos island is one of those places that seems tucked out of the way. Located just slightly off the coast of Paros, Antiparos is a place where people go to escape the hustle and bustle of some of the other, busier places in Greece. The moment you step foot on this island, you get the sense that time has stood still, which is exactly what you may need in order to truly relax and unwind. Although it is a bit touristy at the main port, this doesn’t last as trek further into the island. As a result, there are some peaceful place to visit where you can explore the island’s natural beauty. The Cave of Antiparos is one of those places. Here’s more information:

Getting to Antiparos and the Cave

Since the island of Antiparos is so small, there are a limited number of ways to get there. There is no airport on the island, and there is also no direct way to access it from Greece’s main port of Athens. Ferris arrive at the island bound only from Paros, which is accessible through Greece’s main port, as well as other ports throughout the country. It takes about thirty minutes to arrive at Antiparos by ferry from the nearby island of Paros.

Once you arrive at the island, you will need to find your way to the cave once you visit. It’s about ten kilometers away from the main port. You can arrive there by rental car, taxi, or by bus. It is located on the main road that stretches from the port all the way up the coast.

Visiting the Cave of Antiparos

Since the cave is so close to the main port and from other parts of the island, it is an easy day trip from most places on Antiparos. One of the main draws of this cave is how beautiful it is. As soon as you descend into the cave, you’ll see plenty of stalactites and stalagmites, and some of the rock formations are illuminated by lights so that you can find your way into the cave, and also so that you can see the formations better. The cave descends down for around 400 steps and through several levels. As you observe the cave, be sure to view the rock formations as well as the graffiti. One particular graffiti etching actually dates fro the 1700’s!

It also has a rich history and the oldest stalactite is near the entrance and dates from around 45 million years ago.  It is thought that the cave was first officially explored in the late 1600’s by Marquis de Nouadel, an Ambassador from Constantinople who performed a church service at the top of the cave. There is also a small church located at the top of the cave now. It was traditionally thought of as a place where people hid, as the Macedonians did from Alexander the Great, and a place of worship that even predated Christianity.

When visiting the island of Antiparos, you’ll want to take the time to visit the Cave of Antiparos.

antiparosIf you’re looking for a secret island getaway, you can’t go wrong at Antiparos, which is located just off the coast of Paros, another Greek island. There’s a sleepy, secluded feel to this place and there are a few places on the island that seem to want to stay hidden. Adding to the allure is the size of the place – the island is failure small, but there’s enough rambling countryside once you leave the coast to make you feel as if you can get lost.

Antiparos is a place to go if you want to experience Greek life at its most traditional, while having a quiet holiday in the process. You can certainly see why Europe’s elite seems to flock here when they want to enjoy a quiet getaway. Aside from some of the typical experiences, such as eating Greek food and relaxing at the beach, there are also some other reasons why you should consider visiting Antiparos:

Go Diving or Snorkeling

Antiparos is one of the more popular diving locations in all of Greece. The Blue Island Divers in particular are well known amongst divers for delivering a great experience. Beginner and advanced divers alike will find something interesting to see in this island. Once of the highlights of most of the guided trips is to catch a glimpse at a ship wreck. The underground life off the coast of the island is truly unique and worth seeing. You can also go snorkeling if you don’t want to take a full dive trip.

Visit Saint George Beach

The island has several beaches, all of which are worth visiting. However, Saint George Beach stands apart from the rest. Many visitors report that this is the best beach to take in the sun and also swim. Not only is the water warm, but the beach boasts some of the best views of all the beaches on the island. Locals and tourists alike flock here to relax and escape from their daily lives. It also attracts families, couples, and groups of friends so there is definitely something here for everyone.

Take a Boat Ride

Another great thing to do on this Greek island is take a boat ride. There are several ways you can go about doing this. First of all, you can rent a boat and captain it yourself. However, in order to do this you need to prove that you’re qualified. You can also take a guided boat tour of the island that are organized by the locals. The landscape on the island is fairly unique and the only way to access some of it is by boat. If you’re lucky, you may also convince your boat tour to stop to let you take some pictures of the rocky coastline.

In a lot of ways, Antiparos can give you a typical Greek vacation. There are tavernas, a few night clubs, plenty of beaches, and unique shopping opportunities. Aside from that, however, the island delivers a charm all its own.

Agios Konstantinos Beach in Antiparos, Greece, is a beautiful place to visit and one of the great beaches in this area of Greece. If you are looking for an idyllic beach experience, this is great spot. In a country where beaches abound, Agios Konstantinos Beach stands out. Here’s more information about visiting this beach:

About Agios Konstantinos Beach

Agios Konstantinos is the next town over from Arachova, and it has a nice sandy beach that is great for swimming, snorkeling, and fishing. There are also many restaurants along the beach, so you never have to go hungry! If you want to visit Agios Konstantinos but don’t feel like driving there yourself, this area offers plenty of boat tours as well. It’s also worth mentioning that this beach is free, unlike other beaches in the area.

Agios Konstantinos Beach, also called Aspros Potamos Beach, is just a few minutes’ drives outside Arachova. It’s a sandy beach with crystal clear waters. There are plenty of restaurants and snack bars in the area if you get hungry or want to grab something cool to drink. The water here is shallow, so it isn’t recommended for swimming, but it’s great for snorkeling and fishing! Be sure to bring some snacks, so you don’t have to spend money on overpriced food at the restaurants along the beach.

What to Do at Agios Konstantinos Beach

One of the most popular things to do at Agios Konstantinos Beach is go fishing. You can buy a fishing rod from one of the vendors along the beach and fish in the crystal blue waters for your dinner! It’s also nice to sit back and relax with a cocktail from one of the restaurants, sip on some cool watermelon juice that you’ll find throughout Greece during the summertime, or grab a bite to eat after a day of swimming.

If you go snorkeling, make sure not to disturb any sea life because it’s bad for them and you! Although Agios Konstantinos offers calm waters, there are jellyfish, so be careful and other kinds of nasties such as stonefish and cone shells which you can learn about at Marmari Beach in Greece.

Another thing to check out when you visit the area is the lighthouse. There are views of Athens and other nearby towns from this point, and it’s a beautiful sight! The hiking trails in the area aren’t too strenuous, and they end up right near the lighthouse, so if you’re into that kind of activity, you should consider taking on this challenge.

It’s also possible to climb down some rocks right next to Agios Konstantinos, where there are fish and corals, so be careful not to touch them or disturb animals while snorkeling. If you don’t want to hike all the way down there, you’ll still get a great view from above! Agios Konstantinos Beach is one of the best beaches in Arachova, Greece. It has beautiful waters and plenty of restaurants so you won’t go hungry.

Getting to Agios Konstantinos Beach

If you’re driving from Arachova, follow the signs to Delphi and then Parnassos once you reach the national road. Keep going until it ends, and there is a big intersection where a gas station is located across from a mini-market. You’ll see a small sign here for Agios Konstantinos, so follow that route, and you’ll end up at the beach.

If you aren’t driving, some buses run from Arachova to Agios Konstantinos. It’s best to ask your hostel/hotel about the schedule of the bus because it varies depending on the time of year. You can also visit Delphi by bus or train, and then there are more regular routes to Agios Konstantinos for you to take advantage of.

Agios Konstantinos Beach is a great place to visit if you’re in the Arachova area or if you want to go out of your way for a nice beach day. It’s best to visit this beach when it isn’t too busy because the restaurants can get crowded and there aren’t any bathrooms nearby, so you’ll have to use the bushes! Also, be sure to visit between May and September because that’s when the water is warmest. If you decide to stop by during another time of year, remember to bring a jacket just in case.

About the Historical and Folklore Museum of Antiparos

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Antiparos arose from a collaboration between the family of a man named Alexandros Konogiorgos and the Municipality of Antiparos. The family of Alexandros Konogiorgos supplied the initial cash of artifacts, which the Municipality of Antiparos generously housed in a specially tailored building that visitors describe as “spacious and elegant.” The Municipality was also responsible for commissioning the signage, and it oversees all operations at the museum. This site opened in 2016.

Some of the cultural objects donated to the Historical and Folklore Museum of Antiparos were from the ANTHEMIO museum. Kiraki Ragousi was the founder of the ANTHEMIO museum, an institution that he lovingly and painstakingly developed.

Some of the items you can find there include:

Getting to the Historical and Folklore Museum of Antiparos

The location of the museum lies in the old settlement of Antiparos. The castle of Antiparos comprises almost the entirety of this original historic settlement. Built by lord Lorentano, it is a single residential complex organized around a square courtyard. There once stood a large tower at the center, but now only the tower’s base remains. Residents later added more buildings to the castle’s perimeter, which now constitute the main village of Antiparos, also called Kastro.

The museum is located along the main walkway of this settlement, about 400 meters from the promenade by the coast. You can reach it on foot, walking the narrow stone streets through the old castle and courtyard.

Exploring Antiparos While Here

For such a geographically small area, there is so much to do and explore on Antiparos. You may spend time getting to know the local people around the village or at the port. Another popular destination is the Cave of Agios Ioannis. It boasts some of the oldest known stalactites and stalagmites in the world. Perhaps more attractive are the numerous beaches you may go swimming in or windsurfing near. You may even be interested in seeing the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Apollo on nearby Despotiko.

Nevertheless, do take some time out of one afternoon to wander up the old stone streets and absorb a little bit of the history of this beautiful, relic-strewn land. Enter the modest but stately Historical and Folklore Museum and allow it to give you proper context for your travels. The museum, after all, captures the essence of culture, history, and life in Antiparos and surrounding areas.
