Parga is one of those places in Greece that seems too scenic to be real. With its ancient castle perched above the water overlooking the view, Parga is one of those idyllic beachside towns that leaves guests feeling peaceful and filled with wonder. Located on the northern Greek coast, this is a popular escape for visitors without being too packed with tourism. Here’s a list of some of the top things you can do while here:

Visit the Archeron River

Although the town is most known for its proximity to the ocean, there’s more to explore here than its beaches. The Archeron River is certainly worth a visit because not only are the views amazing here, but it’s a serene place to spend the day. Hike along the riverbank, dip a toe in the cool water, and enjoy a picnic lunch by the water. You won’t want to miss this! The river also has a rich history, since its very flow is tied into the Nekromanteion and the Greek myths described it as flowing straight into Hades.

Soak Up the Sun at the Beach

Of course, you won’t want to travel to Parga without visiting the beach! In fact, the beaches here are incredibly scenic, so when you’re not relaxing, it’s worth it to take it all in. Valtos Beach and Lichnos Beach are two of the best beaches in the area. If you’re visiting the area for an extended period of time, you’ll have plenty of time to visit both!

View Aphrodite’s Cave

Another thing that you should do while visiting Parga is visit Aphrodite’s Cave. In order to get here, you need to take a short boat ride, but the effort is well worth it. The cave is beautiful and a worthwhile place to spend the day. If possible, visit the cave by taking a boat tour so that you can learn about the history and lore surrounding the cave as you go. You will also have a chance to take some of the best photos of the cave from the boat.

Tour the Venetian Castle

Perched on a hill overlooking the sea, the Venetian Castle is rich with history. Whether you walk around the grounds, snap a few photos of the view, or tour the inside of the castle, this is definitely an experience that is worth having while you’re here. The walk up to the castle is equally as memorable. Give yourself plenty of time to stop in browse all the shops you’ll find along the way.

Visit the Nekromanteion

The Nekromanteion represents an interesting part of the history and culture of the people of Parga. Located near the town, this archaeological site is where the Oracle of Ephyra lived thousands of  years ago. If you decide to visit here, be sure to take one of the tours. The guide will not only explain to you the details of the building itself, but also entertain you with stories and lore surrounding the oracle. In Greek, nekromanteion means, “oracle of death”, and the nearby Archeron River was said to be the path into Hades inGreek mythology.

While visit Parga, you won’t want to miss doing these fun activities!

As far as beach towns goes, Parga stands apart from some of the others that can be found in Greece. The landscape here is partially responsible since there is a large hill with homes and businesses nestled against it that stands against the shore. There is also a large castle on top of this hill that seems to keep watch over the waters surrounding it.

Just as Parga has been enchanting its visitors through the ages, Valtos Beach is a major attraction. While there are certainly other beaches in the area, Valtos is constantly listed as one of the top must-see beaches in all of Greece. Here’s a glimpse at what it takes to visit Valtos Beach in Parga:

Getting to Valtos Beach

Valtos Beach is located in Parga, which is on the mainland in Northern Greece. In fact, this is a convenient place to go if you are already visiting Parga. It’s just a short walk that is located at the Venetian Castle that is perched over Parga. No matter if you’re staying in Parga or just passing through, you’ll definitely want to spend some time at this beach, even if you only have an hour or so. The easiest way to get to Parga is to fly into the nearby Ioannina and there are flights that arrive at this regional airport from Athens on a daily basis. Other than that, you could always fly into the Athens Airport and either rent a car or take a bus. However, it’s over a six hour drive from the airport to Parga depending on the traffic. To get to the beach you can either walk, drive your car, take a taxi, or take water taxi from Parga.

What to Do at Valtos Beach

Although Valtos Beach is one of the most popular beaches in all of Greece, it is also three kilometers long. This means that no matter how busy it is, there will always be enough space for everyone to have a good time. When planning your beach day, you’ll want to decide where in the beach you want to spend your time so that you can find the correct parking lot, or have transportation drop you off in the right spot. Once you arrive at the beach, you can lounge on one of the sun beds, take a relaxing walk, snorkel, or even do some scuba diving.

Before you arrive at the beach, you’ll ant to make sure that you are prepared. Make sure you wear good beach shoes. The beach isn’t made up of sand but rather small pebbles that can be tiring on the feet. However, as long as you wear your sandals, you’ll have a great time at this beach. The water is a beautiful, crystal blue that stays warm during the peak tourist season. For that reason, it is an excellent beach for swimming. The landscape is also amazing because the beach is surrounded by lush greenery. Don’t forget your camera!

While in Parga, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Valtos Beach!

Parga town and the castle in GreeceParga is one of those idyllic seaside villages that seem to have jumped off the pages of the storybooks. Located in Northern Greece, Parga is known just as much for its beautiful scenery as it is its rich history. What’s even better is that the village is perched right on the sea, and visitors and locals alike enjoy the waters while they’re here.

Standing over Parga is something that isn’t necessarily unique to Greece, but it’s special nonetheless. Even though the Venetian Castle of Parga is one of many such castles scattered throughout Greece, it’s hard to go anywhere in the town without being aware of its presence. You truly don’t want to miss the chance to take a tour of this castle, or at least walk around and take it all in and maybe read a few of the informational plaques. Here’s more information about visiting this historical site:

History of the Venetian Castle of Parga

When gazing at the way the castle is sitting on top of the hill, overlooking the water, it is clear that there has to be a story behind it. For those who see it, it is a reminder at just how long the history of the region really is. The castle was built in the 11th Century A.D. by the people of Parga as a way to help protect them from the Ottoman Empire. In the 13th Century A.D., as the Ottoman Empire gained even more control over the surrounding areas near Parga, the people decided to make the castle even stronger. In 1537, the Ottoman admiral, Barbarossa, destroyed the castle. In 1572, the castle was reconstructed by the Venetians and shortly after that, it was demolished again. The Venetians rebuilt it one more time after that and this time, the castle was stronger than ever. It is still standing today, exactly as it was. The Venetians’ fourth attempt at building a strong, fortified castle was finally successful.

Visiting the Venetian Castle of Parga

If you happen to be staying in Parga or in one of the other nearby places, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the fortress. You can either take a tour of the grounds once you arrive, take a tour of the city and make sure that it stops at the castle, and also give yourself a guided a tour based on the resources they have available to you. To get the most out of it, however, you’ll want to take a tour.

What to Look Out for When You Visit

When you visit here, you will have the chance to view some unique things. One of the things that makes this such a beautiful place to see is that it is an outstanding example of the Venetian fortress-architecture of the time. There are a total of eight towers located outside of the fortress as well as two cisterns for water storage. The castle also has some unique features, such as the Lion of Venice, which is perched at the entrance, depictions of two-headed eagles, two emblems of Ali Pasha, and a secret passageway that leads to the sea.

You won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Venetian Castle of Parga during your stay in this region!

Parga is a town located in the northwestern part of the Epirus Region in Greece, and it is also one of the most popular travel destinations in the entire country.

The town of Parga is largely known for being a resort town, famous for its beautiful scenery. The beaches in Parga are about as close as you can get to the stereotypical idea of what paradise is Pargasupposed to look like. In no particular order, the most popular beaches in Parga are Piso Kryoneri, Ai Giannakis, Lichnos, Valtos, Kryoneri, and Sarakiniko.

If you’re looking to take a boat trip, go with Marco Polo. This all-day cruise brings you out to Antipaxos before exploring the blue caves in Paxos, which is an island off the coast of Parga. With this all-day cruise, you’ll be able to jump off the boat, and go swimming during the trip, and they’ll even take you shopping in Gaios, which is a small town on the island of Paxos. The trip includes a nice little lunch before you head back to Parga. The crew is outstanding, providing an incredibly fun environment with their upbeat moods and excellent music selection. And if you’re lucky, you’ll even see some dolphins swimming alongside of the boat and jumping out of the water! The Marco Polo crew knows that this is a huge crowd-pleaser, and they do their best to make sure that their passengers get to see this, although it’s not something they can guarantee.

One of the most popular attractions in Parga is the Paragaea Parga Old Olive-Oil Factory. Here, you will take a guided tour that is highly informative, explaining the history of olives, the history of how olive oil is made, and the tour will also educate you on the history of Parga. At the conclusion of the tour, visitors will get the opportunity to sample some bread and olive oil that was made locally. If you like it, you have the option to purchase some at the gift shop.

But back to that beautiful scenery we were talking about before. One of the best examples of Parga’s beautiful scenery is the Acheron River. My explanation won’t do it justice, as it’s one of those things that you just have to see for yourself, but I’ll do my best. Here, you can go river rafting, canoeing, sailing and more! Just about the only thing I wouldn’t advise you to do in this river is to go swimming. First and foremost, there are snakes in the water, and that’s everybody’s nightmare, but also because the water is really, really cold. There are also other activities to do while you’re at the river, like zip lining across the river and horseback riding. It’s also worth noting that the wildlife that you’ll see here is incredible!

While all of this may sound amazing, you could argue that I haven’t even shared the best location for seeing the most incredible views of Parga yet. If you’re up for the task, as it takes some mild hiking up stone paths and some stairs, you will find the best views of Parga at the castle of Erimokastro – Venizianische Burg. You’ll thank me later for telling you to wear the appropriate footwear for the trek.

So you want to travel to Greece, huh? Let me tell you why Parga would be an excellent choice, and why so many others have chosen Parga as their travel destination every single year.

When you’re thinking about vacationing in Greece, one of the biggest factors that travelers take into account are the beaches. Greece is known for having some of the most amazingly beautiful beaches in the entire world. In Parga, there are three beaches that are each a little piece of heaven.

Krioneri Beach: The main beach in Parga is Krioneri Beach, which has incredibly blue water that is as warm as it is beautiful. This is an extremely popular beach for swimming — more specifically for snorkeling because of how clear the water is. Folks come from all over to snorkel at Krioneri Beach, because it’s almost like swimming in a giant swimming pool with plenty of sea life. Don’t worry about bringing the necessary snorkeling equipment with you to Parga. Save that extra space in your travel bag for a nice pair of shoes, because there are shops that line the beach that sell snorkels, water goggles, floatation devices and all kinds of fishing equipment. They also have tables, sunbeds and umbrellas that you can rent for the day at reasonable prices.

Lichnos Beach: If you have yet to book your hotel, there are plenty of hotels right near Lichnos Beach. This is one of the most active beaches, due to all of the water sports that beachgoers partake in here. From waterskiing, jet skiing, wind surfing, you name it, and it’s happening at Lichnos Beach. There are plenty of rental services in the area if you and your guests want to get in on the action. If you are interested, you can even look up some companies that offer lessons for customers of all experience levels. It’s also quite a popular location for people to go fishing, as well. Lichnos Beach has a great reputation for being very clean, and has a fantastic setting, as mountains and trees surround it.

Valtos Beach: While Lichnos Beach is almost like a slightly oversized cove, and Krioneri Beach is widely regarded as the go-to beach in Parga, it is Valtos Beach that is the arguably the most beautiful beach of the trio. Valtos Beach perfectly embodies what paradise is supposed to both look and feel like. Located behind the Venetian Castle of Parga is where you will find this tropical paradise. With its golden sands and crystal clear water, it will not take you long to notice why tourists and locals alike have fallen in love with this beach. The beach is in a lively area of Parga, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants in close proximity. Simply put, this beach has absolutely everything that you need. Waterskiing, paragliding, windsurfing, canoes, snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing — you certainly have plenty of options to choose from here. Valtos Beach is easily accessible by car, boat or on foot, and it makes for a perfect day during your stay in Parga.
