Andros is one of those Greek islands that merge tradition with modern life. Part of the Cyclades, the island is characterized by its typical Mediterranean climate, gorgeous beaches, and a diverse range of things to do. In fact, it’s the second largest island in the Cyclades, which means that it offers the perfect escape. Here’s a list of some of the things you can do while here:

Go Hiking

One of the things that sets this island apart is its beautiful scenery, most of which is best explored by foot. In fact, the island is called a “walker’s paradise” by people who visit. The terrain is fairly mountainous, with footpaths stretching from one end of the island to the other. In the past, people and donkeys to help them get from one place to the next used these paths. Today, they offer guests an alternative way to explore the island’s gorgeous terrain. If you don’t want to venture into the mountains, there are plenty of walking opportunities near the coast! Check out the Village Path for some of the best walking.

Enjoy the Beach

Like any Greek island, there is no shortage of gorgeous beaches on Andros. In fact, if you spend most of your time on the island you’ll be in good company – they are the main reason why tourists from all over the world flock here. Vitali Beach, for example, is perfect for those who want to relax and unwind in relative seclusion. Since it is off the beaten path, the views are outstanding. Another great choice is Achla Beach, which is also scenic and fairly remote. Not all the beaches here are remote, though. Agios Petros Beach has a great crowd but is also very scenic.

Learn About Art

There is a thriving culture of artists on Andros. While here, you can enjoy some of this history by visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Sculpture. Both museums give a nice overview of art and how it relates to the island. Each year, artists from all over the world come here because the scenery and the Greek way of life inspire them. Each of these museums houses important pieces that offer people a chance to explore these various art forms.

Pursue Outdoor Sports

Do you like to stay active while outside? Besides hiking, there is a wealth of things to do here and for most of these activities; you can rent the equipment on the island. For those who love to explore sea life, snorkeling and scuba diving are great options. If you love to sail, kayak, and even canoe, you’ll also find that Andros is perfect for that. If you don’t want to do these sports but still want to be out exploring the terrain, you can always rent an all-terrain vehicle to help you explore some of the remote corners of the island.

While on the island, you’ll notice that there is something here for everyone!

Andros is one of those islands in Greece that offers a peaceful escape. It is tucked off the beaten path, but it is also the second biggest island in the Cyclades island group, which means that there is plenty of space to spread out. When you visit here, it is easy to see why those who do come here tend to stay for a while. It is a great island for walking, relaxing, and enjoying the sun. You can do all of these things at each of the island’s many beaches. Here’s an overview of the beaches you absolutely need to visit during your stay:

Chrissi Ammos Beach

If you want to spend some time at the most beautiful beach on the island, you won’t want to miss the chance to relax at Chrissi Ammos Beach. It is near Gavrio, the main port town on the island, and also another village named Batsi. In fact, the beach is located right off the island’s major road so it’s a convenient beach from many locations. If you’re staying near the port, you’ll definitely want to spend some time here. The name means, “golden sand” in Greece, and it is a reflection of how gorgeous the beach itself is. This is also an organized beach and there are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas to rent. There are also some facilities on the beach, which will add to your comfort.

Batsi Beach

This is one of the most popular tourist beaches on the island since it is located at the popular beachside resort of Batsi. It is also one of the most organized beaches, which means that there are plenty of facilities here for people to enjoy. Like many of the beaches on the island, it’s also stunningly beautiful. If you’re staying in or near Batsi, you won’t want to miss the chance to soak up the sun at this beach!

Achla Beach

This beach is fairly close from the village of Chora, which means that if you are staying in this area, you’ll definitely want to spend plenty of time here. Like Chrissi Ammos Beach, Achla is gorgeous. However, unlike Chrissi Ammos, Achla Beach is fairly secluded, giving visitors a truly restful experience. However, this peace does come at a slight price. There are no facilities here, which means that people will have to bring their own things. The beach itself is also hard to reach, which means that you will need to stay close by and also have your own transportation if you’re going to spend time here.

Vlychada Beach

Vlychada Beach is also known as being a place that has incredible beauty. It also has soft sand, brilliant blue water, and direct access to the famous Greek sunshine. The landscape here is also pretty dramatic and that also adds to the beauty of the place. There are no facilities here and the only people who really come here are those who are looking for a quiet and solitary beach day.

While visiting the island of Andros, you will want to spend plenty of time at each of these beaches!

Andros, Greece is one of the Cycladic islands that stands out thanks to its greenery, beautiful mountains, beaches, and rural villages. Chora is known for its narrow alleys and breathtaking mansions. Andros Island is rich in history from the archaeological sites, castles, and towers to the mythology and museums. Anyone who loves history will want to visit and explore the monasteries of Andros, Greece.

Monastery of Panagia Panachrandou

The Monastery of Panagia Panachrandou sits on the mountain slopes of Gerakones. The monastery was built in 963 by Emporer Nikiforos Fokas. The Monastery of Panagia Panachrandou is a fortified Byzantine monastery that is considered one of the finest in Andros. Inside the monastery you will see the beautiful chapel that is of Byzantine design including a dome and a library. The location of the monastery offers amazing panoramic views of the surrounding area. The area is also the perfect place to hike.

Monastery of Agia Irini

The Monastery of Agia Irini is a Byzantine women’s monastery that is located a short distance from the village of Apikia. The monastery was built by two monks beginning in 1780. The monastery was abandoned in 1843. In 2006, Eleftherios Polemis purchased the 13-acre estate, which included the ruined monastery.

For ten years, Polemis and his family restored the buildings of the monastery with care and respect to the original structure. They managed to preserve the temple in the process. During a visit to the Monastery of Agia Irini you can view the temple that is made of slate that has crosses and arches and crosses inside. The floor of the monastery features a bicepalous eagle. There is also a marble icon that dates to 1806. The monastery also has a museum that is worth a visit.

Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi

The Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi is also known as the Monastery of Agia. This is one of the oldest monasteries in the Cyclades, though the exact date of its construction is unknown. It is believed to have been built by order of Empress Theodora in 842.

This monastery is located near the harbor of Batsi. In 1928, the monastery was turned into a convent. The Byzantine-style monastery features gorgeous carved icons and wall paintings from Byzantine times. There is a collection of prehistoric tools displayed at the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi as well as utensils and vestments.

Church of Panagia Theoskepasti

The Church of Panagia Theoskepasti was built on top of a cave in the quarter of Paraporti in Chora, just a few meters from Kairi Square. According to legend, one dark night the locals saw a light moving toward the coast from the sea. The light was said to be the icon of Virgin Mary that went to the cave on its own.

The locals moved the icon to the Church of Agios Athanasios, but the next morning the icon was mysteriously back in the cave. This is why the site above the cave was chosen for the Church of Panagia Theoskepasti.

The monasteries and churches of Andros, Greece are worth a visit.

Faneromeni (also known as Faneromenis Castle) Castle is one of the amazing sites that you visit while in Andros:

About Faneromenis Castle in Andros

Faneromenis Castle, also known as The Old Lady’s Castle or Pano Kastro, is located close to Kochylou on Andros Island. The castle was built by the Venetians during the Middle Ages to keep pirates from attacking the island. Not only could Faneromenis Castle defend against pirates, but it offered an expansive view of the sea, which allowed pirates attempting to approach to be seen. There is a legend that says there were tunnels that led from Faneromenis Castle to the coast of Melissa.

The nearby village of Kochylou was built on a slope and is distinctive due to the tiled roofs of the houses. It looks quite different to the surrounding villages. Kochylou offers a beautiful panoramic view that is worth visiting the village for. The twisting stone paths and idyllic springs of the village add to its charm. Enjoy coffee at one of the local coffee shops when you’re ready for a relaxing, quiet moment.

The island of Andros sits on the gorgeous Aegean Sea, beckoning people to visit. Because of its location, there is a nautical history associated with this island. The Nautical Museum on Andros, which is housed in a gorgeous mansion, celebrates this history. The surrounding area of the museum is the optimal place to take in the striking seaside and neoclassical mansions that can be seen all across the island. Here’s more information about this place:

About the Nautical Museum on Andros

The Nautical Museum opened in 1972 with the purpose of preserving important artifacts in relation to Andros’ naval history. Over its long and complex timeline, inhabitants of Andros often worked as seamen, fisherman and sea traders. The history of Andros dates back to Classical times, with its residents experiencing rulings under many different countries and various leaders.

In the 11th and 12th centuries, Andros became well-known for its sea trade and experienced quick and successful growth. From that time on until modern day, the island faced both numerous challenges and successes in both its sea trade and society overall. Fortunately, many imperative artifacts relating to the island’s history were saved and can be found at the Nautical Museum.

What to Do at the Nautical Museum on Andros

The museum itself consists of two rooms that are stockpiled with a variety of objects. These range from models of old and new ship vessels, naval diaries, naval costumes, and shipping documents, among other artifacts. The museum provides an explanation of the importance of the objects, and provides insight into the history of the surrounding area. Right outside the museum is the famed statue of the ‘Unknown Soldier,’ which serves as a homage to all of the soldiers who lost their lives at sea. Additionally, with the proximity of the museum to the Aegean Sea, the area is perfect for a photo-op!

Getting to the Nautical Museum on Andros

Andros is accessible via ferry, with the closest port being the port of Rafina in nearby Attica. The Rafina port is also just a short thirty minute bus trip from the Athens International Airport. Ferry trips from Rafina take about 2 hours in total and arrive at Gavrio Port in Andros. Once on the island, there are a few different options for getting to the museum. The bus service on the island, KTEL Andros, connects visitors from Gavrio port to other cities on the island, including where the museum is located in Chora. Additionally, there are taxis and cars and motorbikes for hire in the port area.

The Nautical Museum on Andros is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about the island’s rich history, and a great place to get a beautiful view of the stunning sea. Just a two hour ferry ride from Attica and reachable by the bus system of the island, it’s easily accessible and a great way to keep the island’s naval spirit alive and well. You won’t want to miss the chance to visit this place!

The Greek island of Andros is an ideal destination if you’re traveling with kids. The beautiful island is home to beaches with surrounding greenery, cultural events, and laid back villages. Andros is the second largest island in the Cyclades group. Known as “the rock” due to its rocky coastline, the island of Andros also boasts waterfalls, springs, castles, and ancient monuments

Your family will have a wonderful time when visiting Andros. Here are some things you can all do while here:

Visit the Beaches

The island of Andros has some excellent beaches that are family friendly and the perfect place to relax or indulge in your love of the water and water sports. St. Peter’s Beach is a large beach that holds the blue flag. The sand and shallow turquoise waters make the beach a lovely environment for families. There is even a beach club and surf school at the beach. The beach club features service, a bar that plays music, chair, a lifeguard on site, and water sports.

The Kolona Beach Club is another family friendly location you’ll want to check out. Located in Batsi, the blue flag beach is smaller, but the perfect place to relax if you want to avoid crowds. You will find drinks and snacks available. Other family friendly beaches in Andros include: Fellos, Agia Marina, Ahla, and Agia Kyprianos.

Play at the Playground

If you have younger children, you’ll know that playgrounds are a great place for them to run off their energy. When you first arrive at the port of Gavrio in Andros, your kids (and you!) will be thankful for the playground that is found just a few minutes walk away. Also nearby are taverns, restaurants, toy stores, and candy stores. The playground is located in a square that has trees and sand. There is also a café, so you can sit and relax with a drink and watch the kids playing.

Visit the Springs

While young children might not yet appreciate the history and the natural springs found in Mesaria and Menites, they will get a kick out of the fountains shaped like lion heads. The Springs of Dionysus in Menites Village is a spot your family should definitely stop to see. The lion head statues have mineral water flowing from them. It is said this water has therapeutic properties. During antiquity this water would be used only for rituals and not general use. If your family enjoys hiking, you’ll find the area is perfect for that activity as well.

Go Hiking

If your children are old enough to hike, this is something you’ll enjoy doing when visiting the island of Andros. The island has many great trails, which are well-organized. There is a network of over 300 km of footpaths that extend all over the island. There is a 100 km route called the Andros Route, which has been certified by the European Ramblers Association for being a quality trail. The island of Andros is the first and only island in Europe to hold this certification.

The island of Andros is perfect for families as there is something for everyone.

Greece is one of those places that has attracted visitors for centuries. Besides its gorgeous weather and amazing natural setting, there are so many destinations to visit it can be overwhelming. Islands like Andros are absolutely worth a visit because they are filled with this rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Andros doesn’t see the same crowds some of the other islands do, however, which means that visiting here can make for a relaxing vacation.

One of the best things to do here is experience the culture and history through its museums. Here’s more information about the best museums you should visit while here:

Goulandris Museum of Modern Art

The Goulandris Museum of Modern Art, which was founded in 1979, is located on the Eastern side of Andros. It was built initially to showcase the sculptures of the great M. Tombros, a native of Andros. It is constantly receiving and exhibiting international works of art. Thanks partially to a collaboration with the National Gallery of Athens, it has had displays of the works of such well-known artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Cartier-Bresson, František Kypka, Wassily Kandinsky, Balthus, Paul Klee, and Henri Matisse, as well as special exhibits of the works of Greek artists Galanis and Bouzianis.

Nautical Museum

Our second suggestion is the Nautical Museum, which is in Chora not far from the Goulandris Museum and overlooks the Aegean Sea. It is adjacent to the square of the Unknown Soldier, and contains many nautical artifacts spanning much of Greece’s history. These include model ships, diaries, documents, and nautical outfits. Founded in 1972, this is an excellent place to learn about how the sea has affected and molded much of local culture and life throughout the centuries.

Cyclades Olive Museum

Of particular interest to food connoisseurs is the privately owned Cyclades Olive Museum in Ano Pitrofos, which houses an old animal-powered olive mill. It is a good place to visit if you want to understand traditional techniques for producing oil in Andros. The mill, which ran until 1967, was built before 1857, and has many architectural features characteristic of the area. The owner, guide, and restorer of the museum is civil engineer and local native Dimitris Chelmis. A video of the mill as it used to run is available for viewing at the museum.

Kydonieos Institute

The Kydonieos Institute is also located in Chora, and is more than just a museum. In addition to hosting Ploes every summer, which is an exhibition founded by Petros and Marika Kidonieos Foundation of exceptional post-war Greek Art, it also serves as a type of cultural center for the island. It hosts free children’s and adults’ pottery classes from time to time, as well as plays, literature groups, and concerts. Its goal is to ensure that Greek culture survives and thrives in the island of Andros.

While visiting the Greek island of Andros, you should consider visiting at least some of these museums. There wills surely be something here for everyone!

Vitali Beach in Andros, Greece, is a stunning white sand beach with crystal clear water. The island of Andros has many lovely beaches to explore, and Vitali is one of the most popular for its sheer beauty and tranquility. The Greek Islands are a perfect destination for a relaxing holiday break away from it all or an interesting family getaway. A visit to Vitali will certainly be memorable. Here’s more information about this beach:

About Vitali Beach

Vitali Beach is a lovely stretch of beach on the east side of Andros Island. It’s one of many beaches that can be found on this island, and it’s surrounded by lush vegetation, making it an even more attractive destination for visitors. The crystal clear water is great for swimming and snorkeling as well as sunbathing on the soft sand. The beach is wide and can accommodate hundreds of people at once without feeling crowded. Vitali is especially popular with families who enjoy their holidays in the sun by the sea.

Other attractions to see during your visit to Andros Island are the waterways, which are perfect for cycling or motorboat tours. The main town on the island is Gavrio, where you will find many shops selling local produce as well as cafes and bars if you want to spend time at one spot rather than exploring all day long.

What to Do at Vitali Beach

There is plenty to do at Vitali Beach and it’s a popular destination for those who love staying active. If you’re into water sports, then you’ll find pedalos and kayaks for rent on the beach. Snorkeling equipment can also be rented so that you can explore the sea and watch all the colorful fish. There are plenty of opportunities to relax as well if your ideal holiday involves more lounging than running around! For example, Vitali has sun loungers where you can nap under an umbrella or have lunch with a view of the sea.

You can also enjoy a boat tour of the local waterways and see the island from another perspective. Renting a bike is another way to explore the area, and there is plenty of beautiful scenery to take in as you go! Other sporting activities include hiking in the local hills. Vitali is also a great place to see the sunset and capture some stunning shots of the bright colors reflected on the water.

How to Get to Vitali Beach

The best way to get to Vitali Beach is by hiring a car, especially if you’re staying on Andros for more than just one day. It’s not always easy using public transport when travelling around the Greek Islands so we recommend renting a vehicle so that you can travel wherever you like at your own pace. You’ll find many car rental companies at the airport, and it’s an easy and straightforward process getting hold of one upon arrival. If you prefer public transport, then buses do run between Gavrio and the airport, taking about half an hour to get from one destination to another. However, there is no service from Vitali Beach so a taxi or a private car will be necessary for your onward journey.

Vitali Beach is a beautiful place to visit, and it’s a great choice for a relaxing holiday. The white sand, blue sea, and lush vegetation make this one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. You can enjoy many activities as well as simply sitting back and watching the boats go by. With its convenience from the airport and the town, you’re sure to have a holiday to remember at Andros Island!

The Greek island of Andros is rich in history. Archaeological excavations have revealed settlements, relics, dwellings, temples, and more. If you want to get a more in-depth look at this historical past, you should consider visiting the Castle Ruins. They offer a nice glimpse into what Andros used to be like when the castles were standing. Here’s more information:

About the Castle Ruins

Also known as the Castle of Andros, the castle ruins were once one of the most important castles in the Aegean. It is known as the Lower Castle in order to distinguish it from another important castle on Andros. The castle ruins are located at the eastern side of the island on a small peninsula and inlet. When built, the castle had the benefit of being protected on three sides by water.

After the island of Andros was captured in 1207 by the Venetians, they built three important castles: the Lower Castle; the Upper, also known as Phaneromeni; and the Fort of Makrotantalo, also known as Ostodosia. Marino Dandolo, the builder of the castles, first constructed his personal mansion that sat at the edge of the peninsula.

After the island of Andros was conquered by the Ottoman Navy in 1566, the Lower Castle was used less often and remained in good condition until World War II when the port of Andros was bombed and the castle took a lot of the damage.

Tour the Castle Ruins on Andros

The castle ruins, or The Lower Castle, is a popular attraction on Andros. The view from the area is spectacular as you will see water on three sides. The peninsula where the castle ruins are located is ideal for taking in the surroundings. Don’t forget your camera! Though the castle is now in ruins, it’s not difficult to get a sense of its importance when it stood intact. A small part of the wall that surrounded the settlement can still be seen today.

Also surviving today are two towers. One tower is large and rectangular. This tower is located near the center of the site. The second tower is smaller and sits at the northeast corner. Both towers included a cistern and at least one floor that was suitable as living quarters. These towers were likely constructed during the early part of the 13th century.

The islet is connected to the peninsula via a round-arched stone bridge. The isle fort and the Lower Castle are both contemporary, which was a common medieval practice.

Getting to the Castle Ruins

You can get to the island of Andros by ferry from Athens. There is no airport on Andros, but you can fly into Athens and take the ferry from the port of Rafina to Andros. The trip takes just two hours, which will pass quickly as you admire the passing Greek scenery. If you fly into Mykonos, you can also catch a ferry from there that will take you to Andros.

Once on Andros, getting to the castle ruins is most conveniently done by rental car or taxi. You can also walk to the castle ruins from Kairi Square. The castle is located at the waterfront of Chora.
