Patmos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea perhaps best known as the location where the disciple John received the visions that resulted in the writing of the Bible’s Book of Revelations. The scenic and beautiful island comprises about 13 square miles and is among the northernmost of the Dodecanese island group.

Greek mythological legend has it that the island of Patmos was created through the divine action of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. The island’s original name was Letois, after Leto, the mother of Artemis who was the daughter of the Titans, Coeus and Phoebe.

Patmos is a tourist magnet for many reasons. It also sports some of the most fascinating museums on the Greek islands. Two of the best are:

Patmos Ecclesiastical Museum

Located in the Monastery of St. John in the principal city of Patmos, Chora, this facility houses items from the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Era. It also features priestly vestments, rare manuscripts and historic items that have been used to celebrate mass over the centuries.

A primary attraction of the Patmos Ecclesiastical Museum is the icon of St. Nicholas. This painting dates from the 11th Century and features an image of the saint who is making a blessing sign with his right hand as he holds a book in his left hand.

This museum also holds paper documents of priceless and enormous historic significance. These include a manuscript containing the foundation of the monastery along with the golden bull of emperor Alexios I Komnenos. He was the emperor of Byzantine from 1081 to 1118.

Folklore Museum

This is a small private museum maintained in the mansion of the Simantiri Family in the capital city of Chora. The mansion is of elegant architecture created in 1625 by the Turkish craftsmen of Izmir.

The collection housed here features items from the 14th up to the 19th century. That includes Russian icons, wooden furniture, various paintings, old photographs and authentic family heirlooms originating from Odessa. It’s a small museum but it provides a vivid window into the lifestyles of extremely wealthy people as they lived here two centuries ago.

Nikolaidi Mansion Museum

The small island of Patmos has other museums as well. One that is worth a visit is the Nikolaidi Mansion. This is a two-story building of gothic design originally built in the 17th Century. It was destroyed in a 1956 earthquake but has been exquisitely restored. In this remarkable construction, one can view the “ampataros.” This is a sophisticated storage space and room partition of extraordinary wooden craftsmanship.

Cave of the Apocalypse

Finally, one cannot consider the island of Patmos without acknowledging one of its most famous landmarks – the Cave of the Apocalypse. It is said that the Apostle John wrote the book of Revelations from the New Testament in the Bible in this very cave. The short hike up to the cave is worth the trip in order to see this landmark and there is a small museum at the site.

Located halfway up a mountain, the cave is situated along a road between Chora and Skala. This grotto has been declared World Heritage Site. Visitors can enter the space which contains wooden chairs, tables and various items of iconic significance.

While on the island of Patmos, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit these museums!

The island of Patmos may be a small island, but there is no shortage of things to do while here. Patmos is an important site to Christians because many believe it to be the site where Saint John wrote Revelations. It is also known for having some of the best beaches in Greece. It is also a great place for history buffs and those looking to relax and unwind on a Greek island. There are also some great villages to visit!

Here is a look at some of the best villages you should spend time at while in Patmos:

Chora

The capital of Patmos is Chora. This village is built around the Monastery of Saint John, which workers constructed during the 12th century. Standing at the top of this hillside community, many experts believe that the skull of Jesus’ disciple Thomas is at this UNESCO World Heritage site that is an active monastery. Take a stroll through this village to see the Aegean-style, whitewashed homes, the flat-roofed mansions and the narrow alleyways. You will find yourself often pausing to enjoy the beautiful gardens. There are many other places you will want to visit, including the Castle of Agios Ioannis, which workers constructed during Byzantine times and other historic churches.

Skala

Located in the middle of Patmos, Skala is the main trading area of the island, and it has been that way since many wealthy families moved to this village during the 15th century. Since Patmos does not have an airport, this is the first destination many people see of the island because of its large port. Most people can easily walk from this village to the Cave of the Apocalypse, where Apostle John may have received his revelation through a crack in this cave’s top. Take a stroll through this village and visit its boutiques before heading to a local café.

Kambos

This village consists of two parts. The larger part is Pano Kambos, and it is home to the Church of the Annunciation that was constructed in 1937. On the same square as this church, you will find delicious taverns and internet cafes. Stroll through the countryside to see olive groves and orchards while breathing in the scent of pine trees. End your day by people watching at the beach where the party goes on until 3 AM. If you still have energy, then head to one of the nearby restaurants for a hearty traditional Greek breakfast.

Grikos

If you love photography, make your way to Petra as the sun comes over the horizon to capture unbelievable shots of this sandy strip that ends at a huge rock. Various watersports are available, so plan on spending the day playing at this location. You may also want to spend time exploring this traditional fishing community at the top of Grikos Bay. Consider visiting Saint Nicholas of Evdimos, one of the oldest churches on the island and has a beautiful Saint Nicholas of Evdimos from Asia Minor.

There are unique reasons to visit each of these villages on Patmos. Set your dates and get started planning your adventure today.

Patmos is a great Greek island to visit and people come form all over the world to catch a glimpse of it. It is most known for its rich religious history and its unique medieval villages and monastery. However, the island is also an incredible spot to experience all the natural beauty of the Dodecanese island chain. Patmos has a number of excellent outdoor opportunities for active and adventurous travelers. Here are some outdoor activities you can do while here:

Scuba Diving

Patmos is a scuba diving destination, providing a great access point to the beautiful and biodiverse marine ecosystems of the Aegean Sea. This region is especially known for its crystal clear turquoise waters and diverse ocean wildlife, making it an excellent spot for beginners and experienced divers alike. The waters are home to dolphins, seahorses, seals, and turtles, which are all active during the summer months.

Just north of Patmos, the Arki Island Complex Wildlife Refuge is a popular diving spot for those who want to experience the incredible biodiversity of the region. This permanent wildlife reserve encompasses 14 islands and islets and protects rare and endangered species. Divers can also explore coral reefs and Posidonia meadows, or fields of ancient seagrass that sustain life in the Mediterranean. Patmos is home to dive centers that can provide trained scuba instructors, rental scuba equipment, chartered boat tours, and opportunities for certification.

Hiking

Most of Patmos’ villages and sites of historical interest are linked by a network of well-maintained trails. The island’s highest peak, Profitas Ilias, sits over 800 feet above sea level, and the naturally hilly geography and dramatic, rocky coastline allow for scenic views and varied terrain on Patmos’ trails. One popular trail connects the town of Chora to the ancient monastery atop Profitas Ilias, spanning just under a mile of historic paths.

Other trails can take hikers to secluded beaches, historic chapels, or the famous Cave of the Apocalypse. Trails in Patmos range from 1 mile in length to just over 6 miles, offering different levels of exertion. Many ancient roads crossing the island have also been restored through the “Paths of Culture” project, creating a network of lightly used and deeply historical trails that connect major landmarks around the island.

Sailing

For those interested in sailing, Patmos is a stellar spot: Skala, the island’s main harbor, handles boat traffic of all kinds, from cruises to yachts to small sailboats. In addition to the large harbor, however, the island’s coastline boasts a number of inlets, bays, and coves where small boats can anchor. Popular spots include Kambos Bay, which offers a beach and several tavernas, or Stavros Bay, a swimming spot on the island’s southwest side. The town of Skala is home to several boat charter companies for those interested in a daylong sailboat cruise with local guides.

Patmos draws travelers who want to experience the Christian pilgrimage sites or wander the medieval alleyways, but it’s also an excellent spot for outdoorsy types and adventure seekers. Whether on land or on water, outdoor sports in Patmos offer an incredible variety of opportunities to take in the island’s beautiful natural scenery up close.

Patmos is one of those islands where time seems to stand still. Although it has been 2000 years since Saint John wrote his book of Revelations here, the island is still just as serene now as it was back then. Not only that, but it is the home of some of the prettiest scenery of all the Greek islands. While here, it is absolutely essential to visit the Monastery of Saint John and also the Cave of the Apocalypse, which is located nearby. Here are some details:

Making the Journey to the Monastery of Saint John

Once in the village of Chora on Patmos, it is fairly easy to find the Monastery of Saint John. Perched on a hill, this large, 11th century monastery looks a lot like a fortress, and in fact, it did serve the dual purpose of also protecting the island from pirates back when it was built.  However, to get the full impact, you’ll want to take the journey on foot. The path to the monastery can be found in the village itself.

Visiting the Cave of the Apocalypse

One reason why you’ll want to take the journey to the monastery on foot is that it will give you the chance to visit the historic Cave of the Apocalypse. It has been said that this is the very cave where Saint John lived while he wrote the book of Revelations in the Holy Bible and also where he had the visions that led to penning this historic document. Today, the cave is open to visitors and is marked by a mosaic that depicts various scenes concerning Saint John.

Arriving at the Monastery of Saint John

It is important to note that this is still a working monastery and as a result of that, only a small portion of the complex is open to visitors. The goal is to make sure that the area doesn’t get overrun by tourism and remains a quiet place of solitude for its visitors. Be sure to visit the small chapel with the beautiful, painted frescoes as well as the museum devoted to Byzantine art. You’ll also want to watch out for the signed edict that authorized the construction of the monastery in 1088 B.C.  You should also adhere to the dress code out of respect. In general, women should keep their legs covered and where a long dress, if possible. It is considered unseemly for women to bare their legs while on the premises.

In order to get the most out of your visit here, you may also want to take a guided tour. Although it can be fun to peruse the grounds at your leisure, a tour will also give you the chance to learn a bit about the history of the monastery as well as of the Cave of the Apocalypse.

While on Patmos, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian as well as the historic Cave of the Apocalypse, both of which are important to the island’s history.

Even though Patmos is a small island, there are certainly plenty of things to do! The island not only has a significant historical impact, but it’s also filled with a lot of natural beauty. In particular, some of the most memorable beaches in Greece are located here. Because of those two things, Patmos is one of those islands that people constantly flock to. It’s also a stop on many popular Greek and Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Here’s a list of some of the best things that Patmos has to offer:

Skala

Skala is the main town on Patmos island and is where most of the hotels, shops, and nightlife is concentrated. There are also plenty of gorgeous beaches nearby. If you’re staying on the island for an extended period of time, it is a good idea to stay in or near Skala because there is a lot to do here! If you arrive to Patmos by boat, chances are pretty good that this is where your Patmos journey will begin, too.

Monastery of Saint John

This Medieval Era monastery looms over the town Skala like a fortress. Patmos is known as being the island where Saint John penned the Book of Revelations in the Bible and it therefore has important religious significance to Christians. Historically, the monastery is a fortress of sorts. Even though it houses monks, it was also built to discourage pirates from wreaking havoc on the island in the Medieval time period. Today, it also helps prevent tourism from completely controlling the island. It is for this reason that, despite the island’s popularity, it continues to be a quiet sanctuary for visitors. Don’t miss the Chapel of the Theotokos, which has an impressive collection of frescoes from the 12th Century.

Cave of the Apocalypse

When Dormitian exiled Saint John from Rome, the emperor at the time, it is well known that he fled to the island of Patmos where he eventually wrote the Book of Revelations, the last book of the Bible. Since this is the book that talks about the biblical apocalypse, this cave, which is believed to have been his home on the island, has been dubbed the “Cave of the Apocalypse.” Because of its biblical and historical significance, people come from all over the world to visit it and pay their respects.

Argenti Museum

Philip Argenti, the 20th Century historian from Chios, had an impressive and eccentric collection of artifacts from around the island of Patmos. He was an aristocrat, as well, and the museum is also a reflection of his wealth. Besides housing various folk objects and artifacts from Patmos, there is also an impressive replica of a popular painting that depicts the Massacre of Chios. The original painting can be found in the Louvre museum in Paris. This is a great place to get an overview of the culture and folk history of the island.

Besides visiting these attractions, Patmos is a typical Greek island that has a delicious local cuisine, gorgeous weather, and pristine beaches. It’s definitely a great place to relax!
