Mykonos is one of the most interesting islands in Greece for a variety of reasons. Even though it is most known for its nightlife, the island also has stunning beaches, a rich history, and plenty of things to do for the whole family! Whether you spend your days sunbathing, dine by the sea in a gorgeous cafe, or visit some of the archaeological sites, your time on Mykonos will be a vacation to remember.

Here are some things you should do while you are visiting the island of Mykonos, Greece:

Delos

There’s no better way to experience the rich history of the island than to visit the archaeological site at Delos. Although it’s a separate island, it is quite close to Mykonos, which makes it a great day trip. Delos has a rich mythological history, as this is where Apollo and Artemis were said to be born. While visiting the site, be sure to stop in on the Archaeological Museum of Delos, which houses many of the artifacts uncovered at the dig site.

Matoyianni Street

If you’re looking for an excellent place to shop during your time on the island, Matoyianni Street is it! One of the things that makes Greece great is its wealth of amazing shopping experiences. Streets such as this can be found all over the country, and this particular street is filled with plenty of traditional shopping experiences, souvenir shops, and plenty of boutiques to make even the most serious shoppers happy. Located in Chora, Magoyianni Street is something you won’t want to miss!

Elia Beach

Even if you are on the island to take in some of the famous bars and nightclubs, you still won’t want to miss Elia Beach. Gorgeous scenery, sun, and seaside bars – this beach has something for the whole family! A bit more subdued than some of the other beaches on the island, you can experience a typical beachside scene in a much tamer environment. You can easily spend the day here.

Rarity Gallery

If you love art, you won’t want to miss the Rarity Gallery, which is filled with one of the most beautiful art collections in all of Greece. The art is also fairly unusual, with many of the “art objects” looking like real people. Although there isn’t a lot of room, the proprietors of the shop are devoted to finding the most beautiful and interesting objects that they can find.

The Windmills (Kato Milli)

Whenever you look at a collection of photographs from Mykonos, windmills will inevitably be in some of the shots. These windmills were essential to the island, and they are also beautiful. The Windmills, or Kato Milli, are a fine example of the types of windmills that can be found on the island. These windmills are located in downtown Chora and will make for some excellent, memorable photographs. Try to take your shot at sunset, which will make your photographs even more unique!

As you will find out, there are a lot of things to do in Mykonos. However, no matter how much time you have, these things should be at the top of your list!

Are you thinking of visiting Mykonos during your next trip to Greece? If so, you won’t be disappointed. There’s so much to do here, you’ll never run out of things to do. Whether seeing the sites, enjoy the nightlife, or seeing the beach, you will always have something to do.

Here’s a look at the top beaches you can visit while on the island of Mykonos:

Megali Ammos Beach

For an uninhibited morning walk along the beach, look no further than Megali Ammos Beach, which means “large sand”. This beach has too much wind for umbrellas, and is pretty close to a the main road, but it is a short walk from downtown Mykonos and offers visitors a peaceful place to lounge on the sand or ponder the waves crashing into the shore.

Agios Lazaros Beach

A cozy beach nestled among many other beaches, Agios Lazaros Beach is close to Mykonos downtown and has many hotels and summer homes on its shore. Visitors to the island will live spending time at this calm seaside. Unlike some of the beaches, this is a bit off the beaten track and may not have some of the crowds the other places do.

Fokos Beach

A beach for the naturist and those fond of taking the path less traveled, Fokos Beach offers nothing in the way of tourist amenities (think umbrellas, chairs) but a single tavern offering local food and drink. To get here, find yourself on the northern coast of the island and arrange private transit. You will know that you are close if you come upon Marathi, an artificial lake.

Kapari Beach

This beach likes to play hard to get. Kapari Beach is one of few unorganized beaches of Mykonos but offers those visitors committed to swimming in its calm, clear waters and unforgettable time. Ask around for directions and bring your own beach-going supplies, you will need to come equipped for a day at this secluded beach.

Paradise Beach

As the name suggests, this is the kind of beach people dream about from their cubicles in the dead of winter. Super Paradise beach has rows and rows of beach chairs and umbrellas, and awaits the vacationer with drink in hand. This beach is especially popular with the LGBTQ community, but provides white sand beach and turquoise waters to all who wish to spend the day (or days) in paradise.

Houlakia Beach

Come for the pebbles and the cove, stay for the spectacular sunsets which are some of the best on the island. Houlakia Beach is not so much for the swimmer (it is a protected area) or the sunbather, but for the nature enthusiast who seeks every opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty and splendor of this earth.

Agios Stefanos Beach

A small beach that gets crowded in the summer, Agios Stefanos Beach offers many things to visitors. Protected from the winds because of its cove shape, travelers of all ages flock to this beach because of the plethora of activities. From water sports to taverns and hotels, this beach has it all. The beach is also popular because of its proximity to the main town of Mykonos.

There is a beach on Mykonos for every traveler. Each of them sharing the clear blue water, white sand, and rocky landscape signature to Mykonos and Greek islands at large. You can’t go wrong with any of these beaches!

It is true that Mykonos, Greece is definitely known for being a party island and once you experience them, it’s easy to se why. However, it’s mainly tourists who experience the nightlife. For those who live on the island, they see a much different side of that.

If you want to see what life is really like on Mykonos, it is important to get away from the parties and head to the villages. Here’s more information:

Mykonos Town

Sure, Mykonos Town is a major hub for tourists, which means that there are plenty of bars and nightclubs here. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to spend all your time in them! If you step away from the major attractions, you’ll see that Mykonos Town offers some great opportunities to observe what Greek village life is really like. Also known as Chora, this place is home to thousands of native inhabitants and also has some stunning scenery. In order to find the places where locals go, ask at your hotel for advice. Some of the best experiences, such as tavernas where locals gather, aren’t necessarily found in the guide books.

Ano Mera

Another great village to visit is Ano Mera, which is considerably smaller than Chora, or Mykonos Town. It is still the second largest village on the island, which means that there is still plenty to do while here. In other words, Ano Mera is quaint without being completely isolated. Since it is smaller than Mykonos Town, though, you won’t need to go far to witness the Greek people experiencing their everyday lives. This is also a great village to visit if you want to see certain sites, such as the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani. Ano Mera also overlooks the water and has some amazing scenery.

Glastros

Glastros is one of those villages that gets a lot of tourist activity since it is so close to the island’s airport and also to the main village. There are a lot of hotels, restaurants, and bars here, but it is still a great place to visit to witness the everyday life of the people living on Mykonos. Between all that, there still is plenty of time to visit the beaches. Many of the most popular ones are within close proximity to this village.

Drafaki

If you’re staying near Mykonos Town and want to get away from the touristy areas, Drafaki is a good place to be. Although it is considered a part of the main town, it actually stands on its own. There are some restaurants and hotels here, but for the most part, the people who live here are able to go on with their lives. Spend some time walking the streets, taking photos, and sitting in some of the cafes and restaurants to enjoy the day.

While on Mykonos, enjoying the parties isn’t all there is to do. These villages offer a great way to spend your time.

Mykonos is one of the most popular islands for tourism in all of Greece. People come here for all kinds of reasons, but mostly, they’re looking to relax and unwind in a beautiful setting. Mykonos is known for its beaches, nightlife, and multiple resorts and there really is something here for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a place to party, or you’re with your whole family, the island won’t disappoint.

While here, you will probably notice that the island has some unique things to experience. The scenery here is beautiful, but the thing that will make your vacation photographs even more interesting are the many windmills that are located throughout the island. Although there are windmills scattered throughout Greece, there are a lot concentrated to this island and you should definitely seek them out. Here’s more information:

Getting to Mykonos

Before you can visit with the island’s windmills, you need to first get to Mykonos. Because this is such a popular island, there is an airport here. You can also arrive here by sea. Besides the fact that Mykonos is also on several ferry routes, this is also a stop for cruise ships. The island is a popular port of call for yachts. Once you get to Mykonos and get settled in your hotel or resort, you can seek out the various windmills. They are located throughout the island, but there are a lot that are concentrated in the main town on Mykonos, referred to as Chora or Mykonos Town.

About the Windmills

Although the windmills do make for some beautiful photo opportunities, there was a time that they had a practical purpose. The windmills themselves have their origins in the 1500’s, but most of the ones that are still standing today were built much later. They were originally built by the Venetians, who occupied the island in the 16th Century A.D. Right now, there are a total of 16 windmills that are still standing today. Back then, the primary purpose for these windmills was to mill wheat that grew on the island. The wind power turned the mechanism that enabled them to work. Today, the windmills really aren’t in use, but they sure are pretty.

Where to View the Mykonos Windmills

It is interesting to note that the windmills are so common on the island that you can view them from many angles. Here’s an overview of your best places:

  • Mykonos Town. You can see them from nearly every vantage point in Mykonos Town. In general, all you need to do is walk around and you’re sure to see some of them. The ones located on the beach are iconic and make for a great photo opportunity, especially at sunset.
  • Harbor of Alefkandra. Another place where the windmills are especially visible is on the Harbor of Alefkandra. Be sure to snap a few pictures as you approach if you are headed to Mykonos by boat.

While on Mykonos, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit with some of the windmills and to also snap a few memorable photographs of them.

Mykonos is known for being an island rich with opportunities to enjoy a bustling nightlife scene. It is also known for its many gorgeous beaches. However, there is also another side of the island that is worth exploring – its ties to the Greek Orthodox Church. While here, you might consider visiting these churches:

Panagia Paraportiani

The church Panagia Paraportiani is made of one church built on top of four other churches alongside each other. The oldest church is dedicated to Saint Anargyros, close to the end of the 14th century. The other churches established in the 16th and 17th centuries are devoted to St. Efstathios, St. Anastasia, and St. Sozon. At the top rests the Church of the Virgin Mary in the shape of a dome.

Panagia Paraportiani sits by the sea and adjacent to what used to be a castle. The name “Paraportiani” stands for “Our Lady of the Side Gate” in the Greek form. In ancient times it was common practice to build a church next door to the castle gate.

Panagia Tourliani

The Panagia Tourliani Monestery is located in the village of Ano Mera. It was originally built in the 15th century and remodeled in the 17th century. To this day the Virgin Mary watches over the village and is honored every year in August with a celebration.

Inside the church is a series of beautiful screen paintings of the beloved saints and apostles from the bible. The screen has ornamental framing of gold, green, and red blossoms. The exterior is inspiring with its mission bells and defending tower.

Mykonos Catholic Church

The Mykonos Catholic Church of Panagia Roderio is a rare little gem found in Alefkandra Square just beyond Chora town. Built in the 16th century and revamped in the 17th century, this church holds a special painting representing the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus up above the holy table. Traditional masses are held for the townspeople and tourists.

Outside is a tranquil courtyard to rest and meditate. Inside is filled with time-honered catholic history. A visit to this tranquil sanctuary will leave you feeling at peace and whole again.

Paleokastro Monastery

Paleokastro Monastery was built in the 18th century on a hill overlooking Ano Mera, a lush green village in Mykonos. The old castle was used as an abby for nuns. Inside is an eleborate wall painting of the saints and Jesus framed in golden decoration. Nearby are the famous old windmills that sustained agriculture long ago.

There is a large, granite wedge outside of the monastery that is also worth viewing. It has intrigued people because they don’t quite know its purpose. However, it could be a shrine or ancient grave site.  The Paleokastro Monastery is a great illustration of Greek architecture.

The Greek people mostly identify as Greek Orthodox Christians, and taking the time to stop and view these churches gives you a feel for this side of the culture. However, there is a Catholic Church that is worth visiting on the list, as well, and that is also a piece of the island’s history and culture.

The island of Mykonos is one of the most popular islands in all of Greece. Travelers find their way here in vast numbers throughout the tourist season. Besides having its own airport, it is also a popular cruise port. The most authentic way to make your way here, however, is to take a ferry and is a system that is used by locals and tourists alike.

In fact, the ferry is inexpensive and easy, and many consider taking the ferry to be an authentic experience. Although many tourists tend to prefer flying into Mykonos, those who want to really experience the Greek culture find that they enjoy everything the ferry has to offer. Not only that, but this is how most of the locals tend to travel. Here’s more information about taking the ferry to Mykonos:

Ferry from Piraeus

The route you take to arrive at Mykonos depends entirely on where you originate from. For those flying into the international airport in Athens will find that the ferry is a convenient option for arriving at Mykonos. Consider spending a few days in the city before heading to the port of Piraeus to grab your ferry to Mykonos. Otherwise, the port is about a forty minute drive to the airport. If you have a ferry to catch after your plane lands, consider taking a taxi or a bus to the port. You have your choice of ferries and routes, but in general, it should take anywhere from three to six hours for the ferry to make its way to the island. Check Piraeus’s official website for more information.

Ferry from Rafina

It’s true that there are plenty of ferries that leave the large and bustling port of Piraeus. However, if you are originating your journey to Mykonos from the Athens airport, Piraeus isn’t your most convenient choice. The port of Rafina is even closer to the airport than Piraeus is and there are regular ferries that head to Mykonos from here. You’ll want to check the ferry schedules on the Rafina port website to make sure that on is convenient enough for your travel needs.

Take a Ferry to Mykonos from Other Ports

If you are already in another part of Greece, such as the nearby island of Santorini, you won’t need to go all the way back to Athens to catch a ferry to Mykonos. There are regular ferries that connect Mykonos to other islands. While it may not be easy to get to Mykonos from islands that aren’t necessarily close, you could manage to find a route that will ultimately lead you here. You just might need to change ferries depending on where you originate from. Visit the Mykonos port website for more information about routes.

The ferry is a relaxing choice for those who find traveling by boat relaxing. On board, you can enjoy the views, eat a meal, and even grab a drink at the bar. You’ll be in Mykonos before you know it!

There are several reasons why you might visit Mykonos. Although most people come to the island and stay for at least a few days, this isn’t always possible. For example, some may find their way here because it was a cruise stop. If you find that you only have a short time on the island, it can feel stressful. How do you know what you should be spending your time on? Here are some ideas for what you can do if you only have a day to spend:

Visit Mykonos Town

Most cruise ships drop people off at Mykonos Town, which is actually the biggest city on the island. This is where all activity is centralized on the island, you can easily find something to do. This is a touristy place that has plenty of souvenir ships, landmarks, restaurants, and even some nearby beaches. You can easily spend the whole day wandering the streets.

You will also have time to get away from the central area and explore more of the town. As you get away from the port, you will start to see the way the people of the island actually lives. You’ll also want to make sure you visit the Little Venice area and also that you have a chance to take some amazing photographs. You won’t want to miss the chance to visit the windmills, either.

Go to the Beach

Of course, no trip to Mykonos would be complete without a trip to the beach. This island has some of the best beaches in Europe. If you want a quieter beach, head to a place like Psarou. If you’re looking for a party, a beach like Super Paradise might be a better choice.

Getting to the beaches from the town is fairly simple. There’s a boat that departs from Old Mykonos port and goes by the beaches on the south part of the island. You can also take one of the buses from Fabrica Square.

You can rent a chair or umbrella, and there are plenty of places to find snacks and drinks. Some of the beaches can get pretty crowded, but if you’re only staying for a few hours, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Rent a Bicycle

One of the best ways to see all around the island is to rent a bike and make your own itinerary. There are bike rentals located all around the island in the town and at both of the ports. This is a great option because many of the little streets are closed to cars anyway. A bike gives you the freedom to move around without being so restricted by pedestrian streets. You can be free to see most of the island comfortably and not worry about catching buses or being on someone else’s itinerary.

Whatever you choose to do, Mykonos offers options for what you want to see. You can find something for the family, take romantic excursions, nightlife and food. Despite its tourist popularity, Mykonos has managed to retain its old-world charm. You might find yourself making plans to come back for a much longer visit.

Mykonos island in GreeceThese days, most people seem to visit Mykonos to experience its iconic parties and sit at one of its top beaches. Although these activities are certainly part of the experience, that really isn’t all that it’s about. History buffs will find that this island has a unique character not found elsewhere in Greece. Inhabited for around 3000 years, there certainly is plenty of history to experience! Here’s a list of some of the places you should visit to experience the history of this island:

Venetian Windmills

The windmills on Mykonos are one of the island’s most prominent features. Even though some of them are fairly modern, there are some beautiful examples that trace back to Venetian occupation, which began around 1390 AD. For some beautiful examples, head to Chora and look towards the coast. Most of these coastal windmills were Venetian-built.

Greek Orthodox Churches

Another big part of the history of Mykonos is centered on the island’s Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries. Even though it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many there are on the island, each church has its own character and points to a different historical time period. If you don’t have a lot of time to explore the island’s churches, be sure not to miss the Panagia Paraportiani, which is the island’s most famous church. Built in between the 15th and 17th centuries AD, it shows just how important religion is to the island’s inhabitants.

Delos Island

For a real glimpse at the history of the island, head to Delos Island, which is only about 2 km away from Mykonos. The reason why this island is important to Mykonos’s history is that it was actually inhabited well before Mykonos was. At the time, Mykonos was treated more as a supply center than a place where people desired to live. Delos was famous for its ties to ancient mythology. Apollo was said to have been born here. There’s an impressive archaeological site on Delos to explore, as well.

Agricultural Museum of Mykonos

If you want a nice overview of the ancient history of Mykonos, it’s a good idea to visit the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, which has an impressive collection of ancient artifacts. Here, you can see how the ancient people lived through the art and relics that they left behind. This is a great place to explore the history of the island.

Gioras Wood Medieval Mykonian Bakery

What better way to explore the history and culture than through its food? Mykonos has many historical gems related to food, such as the Gioras Wood Medieval Mykonian Bakery, which is actually the oldest bakery on the island. However, don’t just buy treats here – make sure you ask the proprietors for a little history lesson. They’ll be more than happy to give you explanation about their shop and about the various baked goods they have available.

As you can see, there are plenty of places worth visiting on Mykonos that will satisfy any history buff!

The Greek island of Mykonos is known as being one of the most popular places to visit in all of Greece. One of the things that sets it apart is that it is a great place to visit for those who want to enjoy all that Greece has to offer, while getting some excellent nightlife. Visiting the beach is a popular activity, and for people who come to the island, they may want to enjoy a party while lounging in the sun. Panormos Beach is one of the places on the island where you can do that. Here’s more information about this beach, which is also family-friendly:

About Panormos Beach

You will have to head to the north side of the island in order to find Panormos Beach, and this means it is slightly tucked away form the tourist crowd but not so far away that you can’t find a good vibe. It’s 4.3 miles from Mykonos Town, 4.4 miles from the airport, and 4.6 miles from New Port. Since the beach is located on an inlet bay, it’s more protected from the wind than other beaches on the island.

This beach has a fairly relaxed vibe and it is family friendly. There is also a DJ at the bar in the afternoons during peak tourist season. However, you can easily avoid this by carving out your own corner of the beach away from the bar, or by visiting the beach in the morning and afternoon before the DJ arrives. You can also rent an umbrella and sun bed here, but you need to arrive early in the day so that you can grab one before they run out.

There are areas of the beach without sun beds and umbrellas if you would prefer a more natural beach experience. And there is a clothing-optional section of the beach to the far right. Either way, there are no motorized sports so your peace will not be disturbed, while still allowing you to enjoy the beautiful views.

What to Do at Panormos Beach

One of the most popular beach activities here is Kadima. If you’re not familiar with this beach sport, it’s when each person holds a small wooden paddle and hits a blue rubber ball back to the other person. There is also a volleyball net here, which is used from time to time. Other activities include snorkeling and building sand castles. This isn’t a big beach on activities, which is actually a plus if you want to relax. Many people like to simply wade in the water. This is easy to do because there are no waves, the water is warm, and the sand is easy on your feet.

If you want to eat at a delicious Greek restaurant, you can dine at Principote. The atmosphere is outstanding thanks to the views and spaciousness, the service is right on the money, and the food is often raved about. If you choose to dine here, it’s recommended that you try any of the fresh fish dishes, risotto, and pasta dishes on the menu.

As you can see, you can easily spend the day at Panormos Beach. While visiting Mykonos, you’ll want to carve out some time so that you can head here.

Little Venice, MykonosMykonos built its reputation on supporting the party lifestyle and attracting the jet-set crowd. As a playground to the wealthy, this island has made a name for itself. While it’s true that some of the best parties and clubs do happen on this island, that’s not all there is. In fact, more and more travelers are visiting the island in search of something else – a chance to relax and experience the Greek culture. Here are some of the best things to do on the island that don’t have anything to do with its nightlife:

Visit the Ancient Site of Delos

Delos is one of the most wellknown archaeological sites in all of Greece. In fact, this is more than just a simple dig site – it’s an experience! This is your opportunity to get a feel for what life was like back in ancient times. Walk along the narrow streets and imagine what it was like to walk through the streets back then. Enjoy the amazing views while learning about the site’s rich history. It’s easy to see why people refer to it as the Greek Pompeii!

Relax on the Beach

Sure, there are plenty of beaches that have seaside clubs and bars, but they aren’t all like that! Some of the beaches are known for being relaxing and family friendly. It’s possible to avoid the crowds – just stay away from the beaches that are known for their clubs and bars. Beaches such as Elias, Kalafatis, and Paraga Beaches are all good choices. Super Paradise is also a good choice. It’s popular, but has fewer clubs and restaurants and Paradise Beaches.

Take a Boat Ride

There’s also a long history of boating on Mykonos. Whether you want to go sailing, fishing, or take a boat tour, this is the island for you! Besides, what could be more relaxing than exploring the island from its coastal perspective? If you truly have an adventurous streak you can do something a little more physical, such as kayaking. You can also hire a guide to take you around the island in his boat. Sometimes, these individual tours can give you a much more personalized experience.

Eat Traditional Foods

Mykonos is a great island to experience the traditional cuisine on Greece. Whether you visit one of the many restaurants or tavernas, shop for your own ingredients in the markets, or visit a traditional farm, Mykonos has something for you. You can also have the chance to take a traditional cooking class, if you desire. Just remember that no matter what you decide to do, it isn’t really the recipes themselves that matter. It’s the philosophy. Greek cooking is all about fresh ingredients and what’s available locally. As long as it’s fresh, it’s considered excellent Greek food!

Chances are pretty good that while you are on Mykonos, you won’t ignore the clubs all together. However, that’s not all the island has to offer! It’s a beautiful place filled with rich cultural experiences. You just need to go out and find them.

Town of Mykonos as seen from the old harbor. Image shows charateristi architecture of the old town. When many people think of Mykonos, they look at at it solely as an island for those who want to experience the nightlife and parties. While that is certainly the case, the island is known for much more than that! Although nearby Santorini seems to get much of the glory when it comes to sunsets, Mykonos is one of those islands that shouldn’t be ignored. The sunset here on Mykonos is also spectacular. Here are some of the best places on the island to enjoy the sunset:

Little Venice

If you’re in the Little Venice area of Mykonos at sunset, you really can’t go wrong. This is regarded as one of the best places on the island to watch the sun dip over the horizon. Widely regarded as one of the most romantic places on the island, Little Venice is also perfectly located so that there are multiple locations here to gaze at the setting sun. Spend some time wandering the streets so you can find the perfect spot and you won’t be disappointed!

Beaches

When it comes to watching the sunset, few places are as good as the beaches that are on the western side of the island! Agios Iannis is one of those beaches and even though it is fairly small, you will be treated to a spectacular display as the light changes with the setting sun. You can also try viewing the sunset at Kapori Beach. Both of these beaches are gorgeous but not as popular as some of the other resort beaches on the island.

Mykonos Town Harbor

Another prime location for watching the sunset on Mykonos is at the harbor in Mykonos Town. Get here a few hours in advance so that you can scope out the best location! There are even some cafes and tavernas that overlook the harbor, but you’ll need to get to them well in advance of the sunset so that you can be sure to have a prime spot.

Windmills

Mykonos has plenty of windmills sprinkled throughout the island, but you won’t want to miss the ones that are in a prime location for sunset! Checkout the windmills at the harbor of Alefkandra and also the windmills that are located on the hills of Chora. If you’re lucky, you can capture the sunset just as it’s illuminating these unique landmarks.

Castle Panigirakis

Castle Panigirakis has long been regarded as one of the best places to watch the sunset on all of Mykonos! Visitors flock to this site not just for the sunset, but also for their special events, such as destination weddings. This is actually a hotel that overlooks Mykonos Town and has one of the best views of the setting sun on the whole island. If you decide to stay here, be sure to request a room that faces the legendary sunset so that you can enjoy it every night!

While on Mykonos, you won’t want to miss viewing the sunset at these spectacular places!

Mykonos Island,Cyclades,Greece.Even though Mykonos has a reputation for being a party island, there’s so much more to it than that! The reality is that you can easily escape the party life. Sun soaked beaches, peaceful views, and the traditional culture on Mykonos still make this island ideal for those looking for a slow-paced Greek vacation. There are also plenty of cultural and educational activities to enjoy on Mykonos, too. Here’s a list of the essential things you can do on Mykonos that don’t involve staying up all night in a beachside club.

Watch the Sunset

Mykonos is one of the best places in all of Greece to watch the sunset. Head on over to Little Venice, an area restaurant that boasts amazing sunset views. Enjoy a glass of Greek wine and a meal while watching the sky light up with brilliant colors! If you’re not quite ready to settle down for your evening meal, head on over to one of the beaches for an amazing photo opportunity. To make the shot even more memorable, make sure you take a few with one of the island’s unique windmills.

Relax On the Beach

You don’t need to visit one of the island’s hectic beaches to enjoy the crystalline Aegean! If you want to avoid the party scene, avoid Paradise and Super Paradise beaches. Even though these are family oriented, they’re also quite busy during the peak season. For a much more sedate time by the ocean, head to Ftelia, Panormos, and Agios Sostis beaches instead. They’re much quieter than some of the other beaches on the island.

Enjoy Outdoor Sports

You don’t need to sit on the beach to fully enjoy it! If you’re the type that likes adventure, Mykonos has several great options for outdoor sports. You can rent a canoe or kayak and explore the island from its gentle seawaters. Go snorkeling so that you can catch a glimpse at the under water sea life. For something more intense, consider going scuba diving. If you do, be sure to dive near the Peloponisos wreck, which will make your experience even more memorable.

There are also several opportunities to hike throughout the island. If you want to enjoy the outdoors without doing anything strenuous, consider going for a walk through the streets. Even meandering through the island’s shops can help you get some exercise while also shopping for souvenirs!

Go Wine Tasting

Did you know that Mykonos is actually known for its wines? The island has an ideal climate for growing several varieties of wine grapes, and the wines are considered amongst Greece’s best. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to sample some of these world-class wines! Popular varietals include Greece’s native Assyrtico as well as plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Ask around for recommendations about which vineyards to visit, and be sure to order the house wine whenever you dine out, especially if the wine was made locally. You could also join an organized wine tour and they often include both wine and food.

Warm waters, golden sun, and soft sand are all part of the beach experience here. Since Mykonos also has a reputation for attracting a party crowd, you can also find that kind of scene at the beaches, as well.

However, there are so many beaches here on the island, there is certainly something here for everyone. Whether you’re a family looking for a gentle beach day, a young group of travelers looking for a party, or someone who just wants to lounge on the beach in relative solitude, there is a beach here for you.

Here are some of our favorite beaches to visit on the Greek island of Mykonos:

Ftelia

If you’re looking for a beach that you can access easily from Mykonos Town, it doesn’t get more convenient than Ftelia! Because the beach is located right where most of the cruise ships dock, it can also be pretty crowded, especially during peak tourist season. If you love the bustle of activity, however, this is the perfect place for you! The beach attracts both families and those who want to party, which means that the crowd is pretty diverse. This beach is characterized by its beautiful, golden sand and crystal clear waters.

Kalo Livadi

Kalo Livadi is a fairly long beach, which means that there is plenty of room for everyone, no matter how intense the crowds are. This beach is most known for its lively, party atmosphere, though, so if you want a quieter spot this isn’t the beach for you. At the same time, this beach is also family friendly, especially early on in the day before the party goers come out to play. The water here is clean and fairly shallow, which means that parents with young children will take enjoyment here. It is also fairly noisy here so it isn’t the beach for you if you want seclusion.

Agia Anna

Agia Anna Beach is much quieter than some of the other beaches on the island, so this is a good choice if you want to get away from the tourist crowds. It is about six kilometers away from Chora, so if you didn’t rent a car, you’ll want to take a bus or taxi to get there. This beach is located near a slightly larger beach called Paraga Beach, which works in your favor if you want to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Panormos

Panormos is another one of those beaches that is absolutely perfect for those who are looking for some peace and quiet. Like Agia Anna, it is also located about six kilometers away from Chora. This means that it is close enough to the island’s main hub to be easy to access, but not so close that it attracts unmanageable crowds. Even though it is a bit tucked away, however, it is still lively enough to be enjoyable.

While on the island of Mykonos, you won’t want to miss these spectacular beaches!
