Written by in , Comments Off on Why Visit Ano Mera Village in Mykonos

The island of Mykonos is one of the more popular travel destinations in Greece, especially amongst those who are looking for a party. Although that’s the island’s reputation, there’s more to Mykonos than that. There are plenty of places to spend time at, and not all of them embrace the party crowd. In fact, villages like Ano Mera are known for being filled with locals enjoying their every day lives. For those who visit the island, it can offer a nice break from the jet-set crowd. Here’s more information about visiting this village:

Why Visit Ano Mera

Ano Mera is actually the second biggest town on the island, with Mykonos Town being the largest. With that being said, Ano Mera maintains a small town feel. Even though tourists do make their way here, this isn’t one of those places that is completely overrun by them. In fact, this is a fairly quiet place that will offer visitors to the island a place to relax and enjoy the island beyond all the parties. There are some hotels here, as well as cafes, restaurants, and even some shops to explore. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Getting to Ano Mera

Ano Mera is located nearly at the center of the island so it doesn’t have direct beach access. However, it is only about a thirty minute drive from Mykonos Town so you can easily access the parties, main beaches, and top historical sties while staying there. If you opt to stay in Mykonos Town, Ano Mera is fairly accessibly through public transportation, taxi, or in your own rental car. No matter if you choose to stay in Ano Mera or visit it just for a day or two, you won’t regret the time you spend here.

What to Do in Ano Mera

As mentioned above, Ano Mera provides visitors with a quiet place to escape to. Although tourists do find their way here, it is a different type of crows than the ones that want to experience all the parties. There are also plenty of landmarks near Ano Mera that are also worth visiting. Here’s a look:

  • Gyzi Castle. This castle sits perched above the village. You can access it by walking but the climb is worth it. There are ruins here of things like the old local market, the castle itself, and even an old cemetery.
  • Paleokastro Monastery. This monastery is also worth visiting and is located close to Ano Mera. Be sure to observe the rules of proper behavior when visiting.
  • Panagia Tourliani. This is another nearby monastery that is also a good place to visit. There are some great views here.

Besides that, you can easily spend your time walking the streets, eating great meals, and in general enjoying a taste of the local life of the island. This is a great place to really see how the islanders live and go about their days.

The Greek island of Mykonos has a lot to offer and there is definitely more to it than the parties that the place is known for. Ano Mera is a great village to visit because it offers you an escape from all that.
