One of the reasons why Santorini’s scenery is so legendary is because of the caldera. Thousands of years ago, the ancient volcano erupted and blew a hole in the center of the island. Now, the island is just a fraction of what it once was. Now, the island of Santorini consists of villages and cities stretched across the upper rim of the volcano, with a few beaches and coastal areas closer to the water on the bottom. Another great way to experience the views on Santorini is to take a boat tour. Sure, you can easily view the scenery of the caldera and the surrounding area form any point on the island itself. Since the caldera is so deep, however, you may be limited as to your choices for boat tours. Larger boats can’t approach the island because they are unable to drop anchor.

Go for a Hike

Another great way to experience the great views on the island is to take a hike on the coastal trail that stretches from Oia to Fira. In fact, if you are staying in Fira, going on this hike can offer you a great way to view the scenery in the nearby village of Oia. Many people choose to leave Fira and begin the hike so that they arrive in Oia around sunset. It is fairly well known that the best sunset experience on the island takes place on the village of Oia. No matter what time of day you take the hike, however, you will have some stunning glimpses at the scenery.

Explore the Villages

Each village on the island, especially the coastal ones, allows you the chance to glimpse the stunning views from a different perspective. Depending on how long you are on Santorini, you may want to visit as many of these places as possible. Villages that are especially known for the scenery include Oia, Imerovigli, and even Fira. Some of these villages sit above some of the best beaches so you’ll want to also trek down to the beaches while you’re making the rounds.
