Chora Castle in Kythira, Greece, has been one of the most strategic points of the southern Aegean since the late 12th. The castle is called the “Eye of the Greek Seas” because it oversees the Cetan, Ionian and Aegean seas. The restoration projects of Chora Castle prove it’s still essential to the island. Visiting and exploring Chora Castle is a great way to spend the day.

Access to Castle

Chora Castle in Kythira, Greece, is open daily and easily accessible through an asphalt road that ends at the entrance. After arriving, you’ll follow a stone-cobbled path around the courtyard and to the castle. You can see a fantastic view of Kapsali, Crete and Chytra from the southeast side of the castle. The recent restoration and promotion of the castle show its place in history.

History of Castle

Chora Castle in Kythira, Greece, started construction in the late 12th century, and its first phase finished in the early 13th century. Different military leaders wanted the castle for its strategic location, but the final construction was in 1503 under the Venetians. There was a Foreman until 1502, but the Venetians put an administrative center in its place. The wall with the Venetian emblem and coats of arms was near the tunnel from the entrance. You can’t make them out anymore since the French destroyed them in 1797. Before the conquerors went to the castle, 200 people were living there.

Layout of Castle

Near the entrance to Chora Castle, you can see the tunnel where the coat of arms was. Left of the entrance is the prison, and further up the right side is the Venetian reservoir, showing off its beautiful architecture. Near the center of the castle are a few dilapidated two-storey houses. After a 30-minute walk from the old homes, you’ll arrive at the gunpowder magazine. Next to the magazine is the oldest of the four churches in the castle, the church of Pantokratoras. The castle headquarters is near the front of a church, and the churches hold many old murals.

The biggest church in the castle is Panagia Myrtidiotissa, which finished construction in 1580. The church of “Panaghia Orfani” is next to it and holds the heirlooms of Mirtidiotissa.

Outside the Castle

Chora Castle in Kythira, Greece, has a courtyard between the inner and outer walls on the north side. The courtyard holds more houses and churches. The cannons outside the castle are from different eras of construction, including the English, the Russo-Turkish and the Venetian periods. An icon displayed in the church has two miracles written at the bottom. Pirates threatened the ship carrying metal for the icon’s dress, and lightning struck the castle near the gunpowder magazine but missed. The miracle-working icon was at the church for nearly two centuries.

There is much to see when visiting Chora Castle in Kythira, Greece. Much of the castle is still accessible and has many buildings and murals available. The castle is the monument with the most characteristics on the island due to its long history and multiple construction phases.

Greek’s Sifnos towers were financed by the wealth extracted from various mines scattered around the island. The first towers were located close to the gold, silver or iron mines, but the network later expanded. Eventually, they would cover both cultivated lands as well as the country’s hillsides. Here’s more information about them:

Brief History of Sifnos Towers

The ancient islanders were a resourceful people who managed to defend their territory against waves of invaders. There are a total of 57 island-wide towers, which were constructed sometime between the 6th and 3rd century B.C. The Samian war between Samos and Athens prompted the construction of the Sifnos towers sometime during the medieval period.

Key Attributes of the Towers

Many of the towers are now in ruins with the remnants consisting mainly of two floors and some interior walls. They still display both residential and defensive elements. The designs reflect the creativity of the locals in adapting to the need to guard against maritime hostilities. Prominent features include robust walls, arrow slits, and rooftop battlements.

The towers provided critical shelter during pirate raids; they also facilitated communication across different parts of the island. Their strategic placement ensured a robust defense against attacks from multiple entry points.

  • Structural defenses. Since sea attacks were inevitable, islanders developed an innovative warning system. During an attack, a fire would be lit on the nearest tower’s rooftop; this signaled the next tower to ignite. The chain reaction would alert the islanders to the incoming danger.
  • Symbolic legacy. These robust structures endured the test of time, and they continue to serve a symbolic purpose in the modern era. They enabled the populace to adapt to hostile conditions, maintain a fortified defense and leave a cultural legacy to the future.

Famous Towers of Sifnos

  • Aspros Pyrgos. The northeastern portion of the island is home to the most famous tower, which is the White Tower. It was built sometime during the Roman era; its overall condition is relatively good compared to most other towers.
  • Pyrgos Mavros. This is also called the Black Tower. It was constructed inside the relatively large village of Exambella. Its most defining feature is the distinctive octagonal shape, which sets it apart from traditional square or rectangular designs.
  • Panagia Poulati. This tower combines defensive designs with ecclesiastical accents. The bell tower doubles as a watchtower to fortify the island’s defenses against sea attacks, for example. The position of this structure was strategic; its hilltop location significantly improved the visibility of the guards.

The Sifnos towers exhibit the qualities of a people who were accustomed to defending their island against attackers from the Aegean Sea. Although each structure displays unique features, they all serve as sentinels to protect islanders from maritime invasions.

While most of them served as watchtowers, some also sheltered women and children during the raids. They could also hold significant amounts of agricultural products, supplies, and water reservoirs. The ruins of these towers continue to serve as symbols of the inhabitants’ resilience across the centuries.

Visiting Greece offers an opportunity to explore unique and breathtaking landmarks. Surrounded by natural beauty, these sites will add to your trip to the country. If you are in the areas were these landmarks are, you should make it a point to visit them. Here’s more information about them:

Parthenon

The Parthenon is a temple that is visible from many areas throughout Athens. The Parthenon’s construction was completed 438 BC and it was dedicated to the goddess Athena. The temple was built using limestone as the foundation and marble for the temple itself. Close to the Parthenon, there are two other interesting sites: The Temple of Athena Nike and the Erectheion. The Parthenon is open to visitors every day.

Knossos Palace

Located on the island of Crete, Knossos Palace is a site of historical importance. Excavations of the palace were started in 1878, but it was Sir Arthur Evan’s excavations during the early 1900s that would reveal much of Knossos Palace that can be seen today. If you take a guided tour of the palace, you will gain valuable information from a knowledgeable guide.

Meteora Monasteries

The six monasteries of the Meteora in northwestern Thessaly are a must-see when visiting the area. The rock pinnacles that house these monasteries are as tall as 984 feet. The Meteora Monasteries can be accessed via stairs, paths, and stone bridges. The lowest rock of the group houses the Ayia Barbara monastery, which was the only nunnery of the complex. The Megalo Meteoro monastery is located at the highest point and is the most popular of the six.

Delphi

The archeological site of Delphi is a memorable landmark on Mount Parnassas, just outside of Athens. The buildings of Delphi include the sanctuary where the oracle lived; the Temple of Apollo; a stadium; and a theatre. The Heraklion Archeological Museum of Delphi houses artifacts that were found at the important landmark. At the museum, you will get a deeper look into life at Delphi.

Palace of the Grandmaster

On the island of Rhodes in Greece is a medieval castle known as the Palace of the Grandmaster. This is a unique landmark in that it is one of the few in Greece that features Gothic architecture. The palace was built during the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John. The Palace of the Grandmaster features an arched gate to welcome guests and impressive spherical towers. The palace now serves as a museum where visitors can come to learn about the history of the site, as well as the island and its people.

Temple of Poseidon

Located at Cape Sunion is the Temple of Poseidon. Built during the 5th century, the Temple of Poseidon is a marble shrine to worship Poseidon, the king of the sea. 16 of the original 32 marble Doric columns still remain today. Lord Byron, the British poet, once carved his name into one of these columns. Visiting this temple also offers a view of Serifos, Kea, and Kythnos as well as the sea. The sunset from the temple is also worth seeing.

While in Greece, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit these landmarks!

Meat Gyro

pronounced yee-roh. A gyro is a classic Greek dish that is wildly popular here in the US. The primary ingredient is lamb or beef that has been roasted on a vertical spit (imagine flipping a rotisserie chicken vertically). As the outermost layer cooks it is shaved off, exposing the uncooked meat to the heat source. A gyro is commonly served in a pita wrap with fresh tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce.

The name “gyro” comes from the Greek word γύρος (‘turn’), as the meat slowly turns on the spit. Along with Middle Eastern shawarma and Mexican tacos al pastor, gyros are derived from the Turkish doner kebab. Much of modern Grecian culture and cuisine has been heavily influenced by the Turkish world, as the Ottoman Empire ruled Greece for hundreds of year.

In Greece and Cyprus, the gyro meat is typically pork or chicken. Veal gyros are referred to as “doner” (ντονέρ). Typically the pita bread is plain and thick, but some Grecian restaurants use pita pockets and the filling is stuffed inside the pita.

Gyros were introduced to the United States in Chicago in the late 1960s. Several Greek-Americans have claimed responsibility for brining the gyro to the US, but it was Tom Pappas of Gyros Inc. who would go on to develop the modern commercial recipe for gyros in the United States. Here in the US, most gyros are made from a combination of lamb and beef.

According to Trip Advisor, Obelix Restaurant in Fira on the island of Santorini is home to the best gyros in Greece. Being the best in anything is a huge honor, but to be home to the best gyro in the land of gyros—no trip to Santorini could be complete without stopping for lunch at Obelix. Here is what some of the reviewers had to say:

Obelix was, by far, the best food I had on my trip to Greece (Santorini & Crete). The sandwiches were so good that my family and I ate there 4 days in a row for lunch.

By far the very best Gyros that we ever had!!! Don’t hesitate, just buy it! It’s amazing and fresh and very tasty ☺ Early morning or late night, always the best!!!

We had a LOT of gyros in Greece and this was definitely the best place we went to. The value is amazing – you get a delicious, LARGE gyro for 2-3 euros.

Now we know that claiming Obelix has the best gyros in Greece is sure to cause a lot of contention. Everyone is sure to claim that they have the best gyros in the country. So if you have been to Greece before where was the best place for gyros on your trip? Where is the best place in Boston for those that crave a gyro but can’t just hope on a plane?

Greek mythology is filled with some fascinating stories. Although we look at them as legends and interesting tales today, at the time, they were actually considered to be part of the religious practices of the Ancient Greeks. Not only that, but there are some sites here that directly relate to some of the stories.

While in Greece, you will want to visit some of these top mythological destinations:

Delos

Delos is an enchanting place that you won’t want to miss. The island is uninhabited, but there are sites to see here that are worth a visit. The Archaeological Site here is legendary, and there are also some wonderful beaches to explore. In the Greek mythos and legends, Delos is the island where the twins, Apollo and Artemis, were born. They were the children of Zeus, the King of the Gods, and Leto, his lover.

Crete

Home of several legendary Greek mythological sites, this island is one that enthusiasts won’t want to miss. The Palace of the Knossos is located here. This is the site where the legend of the Minotaur was told. Be sure to visit the Minotaur’s Labyrinth while here! You can also seek out the Cave of Zeus here. This is the fabled location where Zeus was born and raised, in order to hide him from his father, Cronus. Once he came of age, he confronted his father, freed his siblings, and became the King of the Gods.

Epirus

Home of the fabled Archeron River, Epirus is a must-see for those who love Greek mythology! Located near Parga, this river was referred to as the “River of Woe” because the river was said to lead to Hades. This is where the souls of those who passed away in Ancient Greece were said to have traveled in order to enter the Underworld.

Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus is the highest peak in Greece, and it is a familiar fixture in the country’s landscape. It was also the fabled home of the Greek gods and goddesses! After Zeus and his siblings defeated Cronus and the rest of the Titans, the new rulers moved to this mountaintop to watch over the Greek people. Today, there is no evidence that the gods and goddesses lived here, but it makes for a wonderful place to hike!

Milos

Few islands are as enchanting as Milos. Filled with wonderful sites to see, as well as glorious beaches, there is a mystical quality to the whole place. It was also the fabled birthplace of the Aphrodite, the goddess of love. As the story goes, she was born directly from the foamy waters surrounding the island.

Delphi

Many of the Greek myths and legends include a visit to the Oracle of Delphi. Did you know that this is actually a real place? In Ancient Greece, people would regularly pilgrimage to the oracle to gain wisdom. The same is true of the characters in some of the stories.

Santorini

The very appearance of the island of Santorini suggests that it is possibly a mythical place. The island is shaped like a the letter u, and there is evidence of a catastrophic volcanic eruption taking place here. In fact, the island is shaped the way it is because the eruption caused part of the island to sink to the bottom of the sea. One of the theories is that this is the real location of the mythical Kingdom of Atlantis.

Greece is filled with history, and it is also the home of some of the favorite stories found in history. You won’t want to miss the chance to visit these sites while here.
