The Greek island of Santorini has an enchanting air about it. The landscape is unlike other places in Greece because the island is shaped in such a unique way. Once you’re on the island, you quickly realize that the place looks the way it does because of its volcanic past. About the Lost Kingdom of Atlantis

Plato first referred to the Lost Kingdom of Atlantis in his works, Timaeus and Critias. In these works, he tells the tale of a naval power that he refers to as the “Atlanteans” that besieged the ancient city-state of Athens. Eventually, the Athenians repelled the attacks and the losing civilization is said to have plunged into the ocean.

Although Plato treats this event as an afterthought, it has left people throughout the centuries intrigued. People have even gone to search for this lost kingdom, only to come up with nothing tangible. One common theory, however, is that the the fabled Lost Kingdom of Atlantis is actually a romanticized version of the missing portion of Santorini.

The volcanic eruption that affected Santorini was so intense, it is said to have torn the island apart and caused it to sink to the bottom of the sea. Since this cataclysmic event is well documented, many speculate if this provided Plato with the inspiration he needed to develop his kingdom of Atlantis.
