Rhodes is one of the most unique of all the Greek islands. On the one hand, it has all the typical activities of any of the Greek islands. While here, you can enjoy the delicious Greek cuisine, shop in some of the best island shops, enjoy the nightlife, and sit at one of the island’s top beaches. This island does have a charm all its own, though. There is a rich history here, which gives the island an atmosphere that you can’t find in other places. It is also a fairly large island. In fact, it is the largest island on the Dodekanese island group. Here are some activities you won’t want to miss while here:

Village of Lindos

For many, visiting the Village of Lindos is the highlight of the trip. Many describe the place as “magical” because it is one of those villages that looks as if an artist dreamed it up. Pleasantly surprised, visitors realize that the photographs were real. Favorite parts of the village include the stunning views of the sea as well as the beaches. Be sure to leave plenty of time to take photographs while here. You’ll want to show people that the picture perfect quality of the village is real, not imagined.

Saint Paul’s Bay

If it’s excellent scenery that you’re after, though, you won’t want to miss Saint Paul’s Bay. The bay is surrounded by two small beaches, each of which afford stunning views. One of the best photo opportunities on Rhodes is located here. Make sure you include Saint Paul’s Church in your shots if you’re able. This is also a great place to go snorkeling and observe the way the water looks from a different vantage point.

Medieval City

One of the things that Rhodes is most known for is its rich Medieval history. The Knights of the Order of Saint John were based here until they began operating out of Malta. Much of their presence still remains in the Old Town, or Medieval City. Whether you take a tour of the area or walk around by yourself, it becomes clear that this is an island that has its share of secrets.

Palace of the Grand Master of Knights

Perhaps one of the most intriguing remnants from the Knights of the Order of Saint John is the Palace of the Grand Master of Knights. A large fortress, this looks a little bit out of place on a Greek island. Perhaps it would be better suited to England or another European city with Medieval roots? Nevertheless, it is here on Rhodes, and it serves as a reminder as to just how much history the island really has.

Acropolis of Lindos

Sure, the island does have ties to Medieval history. However, people have lived here for much longer than that! Nowhere is this more obvious than at the Acropolis of Lindos. Not only is the Acropolis itself beautiful, but it also has a stunning view!

While on Rhodes, you won’t want to miss visiting these essential places!

Old Agios Nikolaos fortress and lighthouse in Mandraki Harbour. Rhodes, Dodecanese, GreeceRhodes is an island that looks like it came from another time. In fact, it has a rich history that is a little bit different than some of the other islands in Greece. There was a time when the island housed the head of the Knights of Saint John and even though the knights are long gone, their buildings do remain. The end result is that the island has a very unique feel. However, the island also has a very rich, ancient history. There are museums on the island that cover the diverse history of the island. Here’s an overview of the ones you really must visit!

Archaeological Museum

If you want to learn about the island’s ancient past, the Archaeological Museum is the place to be! Construction on the museum began in the 1400’s and it was finally finished about 500 years after that. It’s located in the Rhodes Old Town and it features artifacts from the early days of the Greeks on the island. Mostly, the artifacts that were found in excavations throughout the island are being housed here.

Municipal Art Gallery

Not all museums need to focus on history! The Municipal Art Gallery, which is located in the Old Town just past the Freedom Gate, is one such place. There are plenty examples of beautiful art here and it focuses mainly on modern art. The museum has about 90 works that are available to the public to view, but they do own a total of almost 700 pieces, most of which are archived.

The Aquarium of Rhodes

If you want to learn all about the marine life in Greece, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the The Aquarium of Rhodes! It is located just outside of Rhodes Town in the Hydrobiological Station, and even though it isn’t a large aquarium, it does make for a nice outing. There are 28 total tanks in the aquarium that vary in size and each feature different aspects of marine life.

Museum of Ceramic Art

If you love ceramic art and pottery, you won’t want to miss the Museum of Ceramic Art, which is located in Afandou, Greece. What’s neat about this museum is that it gives you a chance to learn about the history of pottery in Greece and how it is being used today. Pottery was an important part of Ancient Greece and it served the practical purpose of storing things like wine and olive oil. They were also treated as art. There are many fine examples of pottery here, too.

Museum of Bee and Honey

Honey is one of those foods that has been part of the Greek diet since ancient times. The Museum of Bee and Honey located in Pastida (about 5 kilometers from Rhodes Town) pays tribute to this delicious food. Mainly, it highlights the way honey is produced and is definitely worth the quick trip outside of the town.

These museums should definitely be on your itinerary while you visit Rhodes!

As the former headquarters of the Knights of Saint John, many of the old Medieval-looking structures are still standing. Yet, there’s so much more to the island than that! While you can certainly visit the old buildings that were part of the Knights’ complex, there’s still a lot to see beyond that. The villages, towns, and cities listed here all have plenty of options for how to spend your time while on the island!

Rhodes Town

It’s true that many of the old buildings that have been leftover by the Knights of Saint John are located in the Old Town section of Rhodes Town. If you only have time to visit one place on the island, Rhodes Town should top your list.

Lindos

Although Rhodes Town is one of the most recognizable places on the island, Lindos isn’t too far behind. In fact, many people prefer it here because it is much smaller and quainter. Rhodes is the largest Greek island of the Dodecanese group, and there are plenty of things for people to do while here. You can spend time at the beach, visit a museum, go shopping, and eat the delicious cuisine. However, it is also a great destination for history buffs. Here are some historical spots that you should see when visiting Rhodes:

Palace of the Grand Master

The Palace of the Grand Master is located in the Old Town of Rhodes. It is at the end of the Street of the Knights, but you cannot miss this impressive structure. Constructed during the 14th century, the Palace of the Grand Master was built to honor Helios, the Temple of Sun God. The palace features an arched gate, spherical towers, and mosaics.

The Palace of the Grand Master became a museum after Greece took over control of the site. Today, you can tour 24 rooms where you will see furniture from the 16th and 17th centuries. There are also art collections, beautiful frescoes, and marble statues.

Ancient Kamiros

Located on the northwest coast of Rhodes, 50 km from Rhodes Town, is Ancient Kamiros. Ancient Kamiros was founded by the Dorians and later inhabited by Achaeans. During the 5th century BC, Kamiros, Lindos, and Ialyssos formed a powerful city-state of Rhodes. Ancient Kamiros was damaged by two earthquakes, one in 226 BC and the other in 142 BC. You don’t need a guide to explore Ancient Kamiros, but if you have one, you will get additional information from a knowledgeable expert about this advanced civilization that was active 3,000 years ago.

Monolithos Palace

Monolithos Palace is located approximately 70 km from Rhodes Town in a small village called Monolithos. You can get to the palace by car or organized tour. There is a bus the runs between Rhodes Town and Monolithos, but it is not frequent. To reach the castle, you will climb a hill to the ruins. While there isn’t much left of Monolithos Palace to be seen, the outer walls are still intact, as well as a chapel. Needless to say the view from the site is well worth the trip to Monolithos Palace.

Filerimos Monastery

Filerimos Monastery was originally built during the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John. The Monastery was destroyed by the Turks and then restored during the 1920s. The monastery isn’t of Greek style architecture, but Gothic, which was popular at the time of its construction. Filerimos Monastery is surrounded by ancient ruins and cypress trees, making it a charming place to stroll and explore. You are allowed into certain areas of the church, specifically where you can worship and light a candle. There is also a gift shop and snack bar on site.

Acropolis of Lindos

The Acropolis of Lindos is located above the town of Lindos. To get to the site, you will climb steps, but it is well worth it. At the top you will be treated to a spectacular view of the sea and surrounding area. Spend time walking through the Acropolis and taking in the ancient ruins. There are many information boards that explain the history of the Acropolis.

You won’t want to miss the chance to visit these historical sites while in Rhodes, Greece.

Tourist port of Rhodes islandAs the largest of all the islands in the Dodacanese islands group, there’s certainly no shortage of things to do on Rhodes. However, if you’re traveling with your whole family, including your children, it stands to reason that you’ll want to concentrate on the activities that the whole family will enjoy. Here’s an overview of some things to do that everyone in your family will love no matter how young they are:

Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes

If the members in your family love learning about marine life, the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes, also referred to as the Rhodes Aquarium, is worth a visit! There are exhibits here that will appeal to visitors of all ages, and it is the best way to catch a glimpse of the marine life in the waters surrounding Rhodes and throughout the rest of Greece. Although this aquarium is on the small side, there’s still plenty here to hold people’s interest.

Rhodes Old Town

Visiting the Old Town in the main city in Rhodes is something that also appeals to all ages. Children especially love it because of the air of mystery it provides. In order to help spark their imagination, learn a little about the Medieval history of the island so that you can explain it to them as you walk through the streets. They’ll enjoy imagining what the island was like back then. It also might be worth it to take a guided tour as a family so that you can all learn a bit more about the area.

Visit One of the Beaches

Besides having a rich history, Rhodes is also known for its beaches. However, some are better for families than others. Vlicha Beach is an especially convenient choice if you’re staying near the main town in Rhodes. Faliraki Beach is also great for families because there are plenty of services here and the water is calm and fairly shallow. Tsambika Beach has several nearby restaurants and also some services to enjoy. No matter which beach you visit, however, your whole family will surely have a great time.

Falikraki Water Park

If you happen to be at the Faliraki Beach, you might want to stop in on the water park for a change of pace! Although this water park is fairly small, there’s still enough here to entertain the whole family. There are several attractions here for the whole family, including tame water slides as well as those that will give more of an adrenal rush.

Valley of the Butterflies

Petaloudes, also referred to as the Valley of the Butterflies, is one of the more enchanting places on the island. If you happen to visit the island in between the months of June and September, you’ll absolutely want to spend some time here. The place is absolutely covered with butterflies, and this is definitely a site that the whole family will enjoy. Be sure to take the time to learn about the butterflies and the surrounding area so that you can also turn it into an educational experience.

If visiting Rhodes with your family, including children, you won’t want to miss these activities!

The island of Rhodes is one of the most unique places that you can visit in Greece. Part of the reason for this is because the history is so unique. While it does have remnants of an ancient past, there was also a strong Medieval presence here, since the Knight’s of Saint John were headquartered here during the Medieval Era of Europe.

Besides that, it is also a physically beautiful island, and this beauty extends beyond the beaches. Although some of the best beaches in Greece can be found here, there are other sites to see that are just as spectacular. Here’s a look at some of the best natural places to visit in Greece:

Butterfly Valley

This unique spot near the village of Theologos is just as magical as its name suggests. With its river, waterfalls, and lush vegetation, the valley is a great spot to visit at any time of the year. It’s during the spring and fall, however, that the butterfly migration really brings the area to life.

Having developed as caterpillars by the Mediterranean during the rainy season, the quadripunctaria poda butterflies emerge from their cocoons and descend on the valley in May every year. Their color and vibrancy among the already-gorgeous landscape is truly a sight to behold.

Kalithea Springs

These springs have been acclaimed for their therapeutic properties since the times of the Ancient Greeks. People descended on the area to enjoy the water’s supposed benefits on such disparate ailments as arthritis and diabetes. In the early twentieth century, the Italian government conducted studies and constructed spa facilities.

Unfortunately, these once-beautiful buildings slowly fell into disrepair. In 2007, local authorities took it upon themselves to refurbish the crumbling infrastructure. These efforts culminated in a full restoration, producing the current attraction that tourists reliably enjoy.

Rodini Park

Located in the middle of the city of Rhodes, Rodini Park offers ethereal natural beauty in an urban environment. Once inside the park, you’ll completely forget about the city streets outside. With its meandering river, picturesque bridges, and wandering peacocks, the park seems straight out of an impressionist painting. It also boats a fascinating history, with Julius Cesar said to have been a one-time visitor.

Seven Springs

If tranquility and romance are what brought you to Greece, then you can’t pass up this beautiful site that’s often referred to as “Epta Piges.” Situated between Colymbia and Archipolis, the springs are surrounded by lush, green woodlands. With the tinkle of the water and the pure forest air, you’re likely to imagine mythical woodland creatures dancing about in the undergrowth.

Walking paths take visitors through the wooded gorge, past the springs, and around the man-made lake (created by the Italians to provide irrigation for Colymbia). The water from the springs is also cool and delicious, and first-time visitors would be well-advised to give it a taste.

Kritinia Castle

Also called Kastellos, this impressive structure rises above the tiny village of Kritinia. It was constructed in 1472 to provide protection against Ottoman maritime invaders. The building is now best classified as “ruins,” and yet it still proves an impressive monument to behold. Its massive stone wall rises stoically from the green countryside, while the parapets seem to climb the small hill at their base. As far as photo opportunities go, it doesn’t get much better in all the island of Rhodes.

While in Rhodes, you won’t want tom its the chance to visit these gorgeous places!

Rhodes is a popular stop for Greek island hoppers, and many travelers only spend a few hours here if it’s a port that is part of a cruise or other boat trip. The problem is, there’s so much to do on this island that it can be hard to figure out how to spend your limited time. You can take in the history, spend time at the beach, or find some other way to spend your time. It all depends on what your interests are. Here are some ideas for things that you can do that are fairly convenient to the cruise port on the island:

Visit the Palace of the Grandmasters

Although like much of Greece Rhodes has an ancient past, it’s the medieval history that is the most intriguing. At one point, the island was the official headquarters of the Knights of Saint John and the palace is where this activity was centralized. Even if you aren’t a history buff, you should really take some time to explore the Palace of the Grandmaster and the other landmarks that are near it, such as the old hospital. If you have plenty of time and this interests you, consider taking a tour so that you can get the whole experience.

Explore Old Town

The Old Town of the main city in Rhodes is very close to where most of the ships will drop people off. Rather than pass through this historic section of the island, you might want to stay put and spend most of your time here! Most of the historical sites in this part of Rhodes are contained here, including the Palace of the Grandmasters. There’s also the historic street leading up to the palace, called the Street of the Knights, and also an Ancient Olympic Stadium. Make sure you spend some time browsing in the shops and taking it all in before you head back to your ship.

Lounge on the Beach

Even if you aren’t able to spend a lot of time at the beach, you should at least stop in for a few minutes. If you’re a beach lover you might want to spend even more time here. Beaches such as Elli Beach are within walking distance of where you’ll be. Casino Beach and Akti Miaouli is another beach that is located in Rhodes Town that is worth visiting. If you really love the beach another option is to take a taxi to one of the beaches outside of Rhodes Town. Good options for you include Faliraki Beach and Tsambika Beach.

There are a lot of options for what you can do while visiting Rhodes. Even if you have a limited time, you can still do most of the above things if you want to get a taste of all of it. Consider taking a tour to visit the historical landmarks, that way you might still have time for other activities, such as the beach.

Beautiful Greek island,Rhodes is one of the most enchanting islands in all of Greece, not only because of its rich history, but also because of its charming landscape. Whether gazing at an old fortress, hiking through the beautiful terrain, or lounging on the beach, Rhodes is an island that can really help you get away from it all. Despite that, most visitors feel as if they simply can’t see everything they want. That’s why it’s so important to have a plan that involves some of the most unique things to do on the island! Here’s a roundup of what you should make time for while here:

Valley of Butterflies

When visiting Greece, butterflies aren’t things that necessarily come to mind. However, the Valley of Butterflies on Rhodes is an experience that you won’t want to miss! It’s located to the southeast of Theologos, one of the island’s villages. Not only is this area stunningly beautiful, but it comes to life in August when the butterflies are here. As such, if you definitely want to see these butterflies, be sure to travel to Rhodes during this month.

Lalysos

Although Rhodes is most known for being the head of the Knight’s of Saint John, the history of the island is much older than that! Nowhere is this more obvious than in Lalysos, one of the oldest places on the island. The ruins here date back to the 3rd millennium B.C. and other places nearby date back to Byzantine times. This place isn’t just reserved for history buffs either. Everyone will enjoy taking in the ruins and learning a little about the ancient past of Rhodes.

Seven Springs

If you love natural beauty, you won’t want to miss the Seven Springs. If you are staying near the main city in Rhodes, you will need to drive about 30 kilometers before you get here. However, the effort is well worth it. This is a beautiful spot filled with rustic wooden bridges, pine trees, and plenty of opportunities to picnic in a natural setting. You can easily spend the day here walking around, taking pictures, and relaxing in the sun. If you don’t want to pack your lunch, consider stopping at the taverna. However, it often closes down in the slow winter months.

Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes

Do you love learning about marine life? If so, you won’t want to miss the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes. This aquarium is one of those unique experience that you can’t necessarily get elsewhere in Greece. However, if you do find yourself on this island, you won’t want to miss it. This is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of what life is really like underwater around the island! People of all ages love it here, and you will get even more out of it if you spend time while on the island either snorkeling or scuba diving.

When on Rhodes, you are sure to want to do all the typical things, such as eat delicious Greek food, visit the beaches, and take in the history. However, that is not all there is to do. These unique experiences should top high on your list!

Rhodes is one of those unique islands where there is no shortage of things to do. It has a rich history so there are plenty of landmarks to see, and is also filled with some of Greece’s best beaches. Despite that, you could feel as if you want to do something a little different with your time. Depending on how long your trip to Rhodes is, you might feel as if you want to venture out beyond Rhodes and see something else without packing your bags and settling somewhere else.

Rhodes is the largest of the islands in the Dodecanese island group, which means that there are some islands that are close enough to it in order to be enjoyable day trips. These islands are a perfect way to satisfy your urge to travel without relocated. Here’s more information:

Symi

Symi is an easy ferry ride from the island of Rhodes since the two islands are so close to one another. Once you end up at the ferry port, it should only take about 1 hour and 45 minutes of travel time on the ferry in order to get to Symi. Once there, you will likely dock in Ano Symi, which is a gorgeous port town worth exploring. The scenery on this island is enchanted, and you can easily spend the whole day here finding new things to discover. Before you go back to Rhodes, you’ll want to spend time at the harbor in Yialos and also in a town called Horio, which is perched above Yialos.

Kastellorizo

Another great island to visit Kastellorizo, which is also called Megisti, is definitely worth the trip from Rhodes. The Greek name for the island, Megisti, is literally translated to mean, “the biggest.” This is an interesting point because Kastellorizo is actually the smallest in area of the all the islands in the Dodecanese islands. There aren’t many travelers here so when you do visit, you’ll notice that it is fairly quiet. Locals live their daily, traditional lives to the fullest, which means this is an excellent place to go if you are looking for a bit of an escape from the busy tourist culture that you’ll find on Rhodes. The port here is especially worth exploring since it is so so colorful and welcoming. Head to Mandraki Harbor on Rhodes if you want to visit here, but pay careful attention to the schedule so that you can make it back to Rhodes on time. It takes about 2.5 hours by boat to get to Kastellorizo from Rhodes.

Chalki

Chalki, also referred as Halki, is another island that is worth visiting. The ferry ride from Rhodes only takes about an hour and this makes it especially appealing. This is one of those places that has maintained its traditional vibe. It is a fairly small island and there aren’t a lot of tourists who make their way here. Spend your time exploring the villages and coastline. While you’re at it, be sure to sit at a nice cafe, taverna, or restaurant and enjoy a traditional meal before you head back.

While on Rhodes, you won’t want to miss the chance to take one of these easy island day trips!

The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes is a medieval castle located on the island of Rhodes in Greece. Also known as the Kastello, the area was once a citadel and the headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller. The palace is distinguished as being one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece, making it an important part of the country’s history. It is known for being the location of the former seat of the Knights of Saint John. Here’s more information:

About the Palace of the Grand Master

The Palace of the Grand Master was built in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John. The original structure was constructed in honor of the Temple of Sun God, also known as Helios. The palace was once home to 158 rooms, a testament to the grandeur displayed during this period. The castle is distinguished by its arched gate that welcomes visitors and its unique spherical towers.

The structure was nearly destroyed in 1858 when explosive detonated from a hidden location in the basement of the church of Saint John. The palace was restored during the beginning of the 20th century by a group of Italians who were occupying the Dodecanese islands. In 1947, the Dodecanese Islands were transferred back to Greece as part of the Paris Peace Treaties, giving the nation control of the palace once again.

What to Do at the Palace of the Grand Master

Once Greece gained control of the palace and its grounds, the site was converted to a museum. Millions of tourists have visited this site, learning about the rich history of this corner of the world and its people. With so many amazing things to see at the palace, it is easy to fill a few hours touring this site. 24 rooms of the palace are still open to touring.

Within the rooms, you will find furniture collections from the 16th and 17h centuries as well as impressive art collections. The most popular rooms to visit include the Grand Reception Hall, the Waiting Room, the awe-inspiring ballroom, and the luxurious Music Room. Be sure to check out the stunning frescoes, the marble statues, and the famous Medusa Mosaic.

How to Get to the Palace of the Grand Master

In order to tour this historical palace, you need to first get to the island of Rhodes. As the largest island in the Dodecanese, there are multiple travel options available to visitors. Rhodes International Airport offers many direct flights to and from Athens, making this a convenient travel option. After a short 50-minute flight, you can take a taxi cab to reach Rhodes Town, located approximately 16 kilometers from the airport.

Many visitors also choose to take ferries from Athens or other island locations. Once you arrive in the Old Town of Rhodes, it is easy to find the imposing palace. You will find the Palace of the Grand Master at the end of the Street of the Knights.

Visiting this grandiose palace is a true bucket list item. Do not miss your chance to tour this historical fortress and castle while on the island of Rhodes.

Rhodes is one of the most unique islands in all of Greece. On the one hand, it is every bit the picture of a typical Greek island with its gorgeous sun soaked beaches, rugged hills, and lush vegetation. On the other, it is a great example of an island with a unique past. The former seat of the Knights of Saint John, Rhodes has a clear tie to the Medieval period of Europe. However, the city is much older than at, as evidenced at places like the acropolis in the village of Lindos. While on the island, you should definitely make it a point to visit the Acropolis of Lindos. Here’s more information:

Getting to Rhodes

Since Rhodes is a popular island, you have a few choices as to how you could get there. There is a regional airport on the island, which means that it is possible to catch a flight from Athens as well as elsewhere in Greece. There are also flights that come from cities outside of Greece. You’ll certainly have more flight options if you travel to Rhodes during the peak season, but traveling off peak is nice, as well, if you desire peace and quiet. It is also possible to take a ferry to the island. Rhodes is also a popular stop for many cruise itineraries that focus on Greece and the Mediterranean.

About the Acropolis of Lindos

Although the Knights of Saint John had a strong presence here, the island of Rhodes, which is the largest island in the Dodecanese, has been inhabited for a lot longer than that. The site of the Acropolis itself has its roots in multiple parts of the island’s history, including the Ancient Greeks, Byzantines, Knights of Saint John, Turkish, and more. There are parts of the site that date from around 300 B.C., as is the case with the prominent Doric temple that the area is known for. Otherwise, there is evidence on the Acropolis of all parts of the island’s history and past.

Visiting the Acropolis of Lindos

Perched above the peaceful town of Lindos, the Acropolis has a gorgeous view of the surrounding area and of the sea. To get here, you’ll want to climb the steps from the village. Although it can be strenuous, the work you’ll take to get to the top is worth it. Don’t forget to bring your camera because you’ll want to take plenty of pictures! People who visit here say that walking through the Acropolis is like stepping through time. Whether you go during peak season or not it doesn’t matter, there is a rich history here and you can’t help but feel it. If you want to get even more out of this ancient site, consider taking a tour so that you can learn a bit more about its history.

While visiting the island of Rhodes, you’ll want to make time to visit the Acropolis of Lindos, which showcases the rich and varied history of the island itself.

Rhodes, Greece is known for its history, but it has so much to offer in natural wonders. Some of these come in the form of animals including the deer Dama-Dama. Here’s what you should know about the deer Dama-Dama on the island of Rhodes. Here’s more information about these deer:

Getting Around on Rhodes Island

You can get to the island of Rhodes in Greece by plane or by ferry. The airport of Rhodes is located in the region of Paradisi and 16 km from Rhodes Town. The ferries to Rhodes come from Piraeus a few times a week. This ferry trip is quite long though, at 16 – 18 hours. There are also Rhodes that come from the other islands of the Dodecanese. Once on the island of Rhodes you can get around by rented car, motorcycle, bicycle, and taxi. The best way to see the deer Dama-Dama is by foot.

About Deer Dama-Dama on Rhodes

The deep Dama-Dama is a unique species that has lived only in Rhodes, Greece for centuries. They are medium-sized deer that have especially beautiful coloring. Their color can vary depending on the age of the deer and the time of the year. They have a white stomach and random white patches around their body that are thought to help them camouflage. Bucks have symmetrical antlers that are quite impressive. The adult bucks tend to live alone, but can be seen in groups of up to four. Newborn Dama-Dama live in larger herds.

It is thought the deer Dama-Dama was brought to Rhodes, Greece by the Crusaders during Medieval times. Others say the deer have been there since ancient times. During antiquity, Rhodes was known as Elafioussa, which means “with a lot of deer.” There are two deer statues that stand in Mandraki Harbor, which proves that Dama-Dama deer has been an important part of Rhodes, Greece for a long time. There are anywhere from 100 – 150 Dama-Dama deer in Rhodes and the municipality has taken responsibility for about 70 of the deer. Some of the other Dama-Dama deer have been relocated to different areas of Greece, specifically to national reserve parks and zoos.

Glimpse the Deer Dama-Dama

The Deer Dama-Dama can mainly be seen inland on Rhodes, near Lindos, Archangelos, and Afandou. You will be most likely to see the Dama-Dama deer in the forests close to water springs. Spending a fair amount of time outdoors while in Rhodes, Greece, you are likely to catch a peek of the Dama-Dama deer.

If you enjoy hiking, the island of Rhodes is home to some trails where you are likely to come across the Dama-Dama deer. One of these hiking routes goes from Salakos to the Monastery of Prophet Elias. A more difficult hiking route, it begins from a steep face of rock above Salakos Village. The route is about 650 meters long and crosses dense vegetation that includes as many as 115 different species including the Dama-Dama deer. The area is protected under Natura 2000.

While visiting the Greek island of Rhodes, you will find many things to enjoy. The natural beauty is something that you will definitely notice while here. Whole observing the natural beauty, you might catch a glimpse of these unique deer!

Greece is known and admired for its ancient sites. There is such a rich history here, it is nice that some of it remains for people to enjoy and from which to learn. Rhodes Island is no different. The site of Ancient Kamiros is an attraction you won’t want to miss.

About Ancient Kamiros on Rhodes Island

Ancient Kamiros is on the northwest coast of the island of Rhodes. It is about 50 km from Rhodes Town. During ancient times, Kamiros was a powerful town, along with Ialyssos and Lindos. During the 5th century BC, these three formed the powerful city-state of Rhodes. Ancient Kamiros was founded by the Dorians during prehistoric times. It would later be inhabited by Achaeans. Two separate earthquake would severely damage the town, one in 226 BC and one in 142 BC. The town was abandoned after the second quake hit. Items found at the site date back to the 8th century BC.

There were three levels to Ancient Kamiros. At the top of the hill was the Acropolis where the temple of the goddess Athena Kameiras was found. During the 6th century BC, a reservoir was built to serve the needs of the 400 families that lived in the area. A Stoa with two rooms and Doric columns was built around the reservoir. The Acropolis consisted of parallel streets and homes. The lower level of Ancient Kamiros is where the Doric temple dedicated to Apollo could be found as well as the Agora, where issues, mainly political, would be discussed.

In the 1850s and 1860s, Ancient Kamiros was first excavated. At this time, the Acropolis was discovered. In 1928, the Italian Archaeological School would also excavate and restore findings until the end of the Second World War. It was at this time that Italian rule over the Dodecanese ended.
