During peak tourist season, Zakynthos is filled with travelers in a frenzy to enjoy the island as quickly as possible. While it can be fun to see as many sites as you can during your stay, it’s all too easy to let the whole time go by with very little relaxation. The truth is that the island has stunningly beautiful. You just need to slow down long enough to actually enjoy what’s right in front of you. Here’s a list of some of the places you should visit while you’re on the island:

Visit the Shipwreck Beach

The island is filled with gorgeous beaches, and the Shipwreck Beach, known as Navagio Beach, stands out above the rest for its beautiful scenery and crystal clear waters. What’s especially noteworthy about this beach is that it is fairly isolated because you need to rent a boat to get here.

Go to Porto Limnionas Beach

Porto Limnionas Beach is a little bit more accessible than the Shipwreck Beach. However, you do still need to descend down some steps once you arrive at the bay so that you can enjoy the beach. Once you get here, however, it is extremely relaxing. The water here is especially clear and calm since the beach is located on the bay. This is also a great spot for snorkeling and is also a bit off the main drag. It’s the perfect place to spend some time if you’re looking to find a little bit of relaxation away from the main crowds!

Spend Time on Turtle Island

This is the perfect place to observe some turtles and if you’re lucky, you may even get to see where some babies!

Explore the Blue Caves

The Blue Caves are another beautiful site to visit while you’re spending time on Zakynthos. These caves are also fairly isolated, which means that it is much easier to see them by boat. If you are booking an excursion to a place like Shipwreck Beach, ask if they can take you to the Blue Caves, as well. Many people get to see these caves after heading back from Shipwreck Beach.

Go to the Tsilivi Waterpark

While there are certainly plenty of places to visit on Zakynthos that have natural beautiful, the Tsivili Waterpark, though a departure from that, is still worth visiting. In fact, this park is perfect for adults and families alike. Many visitors report that this was the perfect place to spend some time in the sun while also doing something different.

During peak tourist season, Zakynthos has a lot of visitors. However, because the beaches are fairly spread out, the crowds are evenly dispersed. That leaves behind a perfect mix of a bustling, friendly atmosphere with plenty of peace and quiet to enjoy the gorgeous natural beauty. Nowhere is this more evident than on the island’s gorgeous coastline. Here’s a list of some of the best beaches to visit while here:

Navagio Beach

Also known as Shipwreck Beach, Navagio Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island. This beach, which is located on the western side of the island, is named after a shipwrecked boat that sits on the sand. It is said that this ship was being used to illegally transport cigarettes before it got stuck here. Now, the shipwreck gives the beach a unique feature that makes it highly photographable. The beach itself is also the ideal spot for people to enjoy the sun, sands, and crystalline waters.

The cliffs that are located next to the beach also make for some great photo opportunities.

Gerakas Beach

If you’re looking for a place that is rich in natural beauty, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Gerakas Beach! This is a beach that people flock to who want to spend the day lounging in a rented sun bed while soaking up the sun. The sand is also soft and the waters are warm. Once you arrive here, it is easy to see why – it’s not only beautiful, but the sun, sand, and water are all ideal for lounging and spending the day in the sun.

Porto Vromi Beach

There are plenty of places throughout Greece that are great for couples, but the island of Zakynthos is one of the best. This island has a lot of coastline, and it is also a place that is stunningly beautiful, making it the perfect backdrop for romance. While here, you can easily find plenty of ways to enjoy the time you’re spending with your significant other. Here’s a look at some of the best places to visit for romance on Zakynthos:

Nothing says romance better than a secluded beach! There is an air of mystery at this beach that really adds to the sense of adventure. Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck beach, is a great place to visit and a must-see while in Zakynthos. The beach is characterized by its azure waters, the limestone cliffs that jut up against the coastline, and the shipwrecked boat that you can tour. Two primary beaches on the islet each offer a different experience. One beach is distinguished by its soft white sand while the other beach is littered with pebbles. On the sandy beach, you may even find the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles that frequent the area to lay their eggs. Because it is a breeding ground, the area is protected as part of the Zakynthos Marine Park. This protective status means that visitors are only allowed to stay within the closest five meters of the sandy shore so that they do not disrupt the breeding grounds of the turtles.

Blue Caves

On the West Coast of Zakynthos, you will find the unique Blue Caves. The blue caves can only be reached by water, however, it is not hard to find boats for rent so that you can get up close and personal with these natural wonders. Tour guides are available to answer questions and to help you to feed the animals. You can also pick olives from the groves of trees that dot the landscape of this pristine park.

Sarakina Italian Mansion

Offering the reputation of the last remaining house of Italian architecture, Sarakina Italian Mansion is believed to have been built in the early 19th century. The house is positioned at the top of a hill nestled into a densely forested area. This location only adds to its magic and beauty. Couples can gaze at the ruins of this historic mansion while imagining what life was like during this period of world history. Plans for a comprehensive restoration project will make this site even more enjoyable and educational to visit in the years to come.

grampas-wineryZakynthos is one of those islands where it’s all too easy to miss out on experiencing Greece’s traditional way of life. The resort crowd here can be rather intense, and even though the beaches on this island are some of the best in Greece, many visitors long to have more unique experiences. One of the best ways to do this is to get away from the resorts in order to enjoy some of the other things the island has to offer. Since Zakynthos is also known for its delicious wine, the wineries and vineyards are a great place to start. Here’s an overview of some of the best wineries the island has to offer:

Art & Wine Winery

The Art & Wine Winery is considered to be one of the favorites for visitors on the island. The  proprietors here are always willing to give a tour of the place, even when one hadn’t been scheduled. The grounds are very pretty and have some of the best scenery the island has to offer. Wine tastings here are usually free, which means that the owners are more than happy to share their product with their guests in order to help them decide whether or not they want to buy a bottle to take home. It’s more than just the hospitality, though, that gives this winery such high ratings – the wines themselves are always a hit.

Ampelostrates Horese Vineyard

One of the things that sets this winery apart is that when people visit, they have the distinct feeling that they stepped into the past. Located in Zante, this establishment has a family feel to it, and it offers a charming glimpse into everyday life. Besides the vineyard, there are also plenty of animals here to add to the tranquility. The wines are are also of the highest quality and the vineyard owners are always willing to give you a tasting and a tour!

Callinico Winery

Visitors at this winery report that the wines are excellent and that it is difficult to stop in without buying a few bottles to take home! This is one of those places where modern life merges with the ancient Greek art of producing wine. The tasting room is modernized and friendly, and the winery uses all the latest techniques and technology. However, this is also an ideal place to learn about the history of wine in Greece. Be sure to schedule a tour of the grounds if you have time!

Grampsos Winery

One of the things that visitors enjoy about the wines that can be found at Grampsas Winery is how nicely balanced they all are. The grounds are also pleasant and genteel, and it is fun to take a tour of the site. Tasting some of the wines is the way to go here because it is the best way to decide which to take home!

As you can see, there are plenty of wineries on the island of Zakynthos to enjoy. Since they all have their special charm, it can be hard to choose just one. The wines that these vineyards produce are delicious and can satisfy even the pickiest of wine drinkers.

The Greek island of Zakynthos is blessed with the natural beauty of olive groves, steep and rocky mountains, lush vegetation, cliffs that extend into the sea, and beaches that take your breath away. Zakynthos is also home to wonderous caves. The most well-known of these caves are the Blue Caves. Here’s what you should know about the Blue Caves in Zakynthos, Greece.

Getting to the Blue Caves of Zakynthos

Getting to the island of Zakynthos can by done by ferry from Killini, which takes about an hour or by plane from Athens who receives international flights.

As mentioned, the easiest way to reach the Blue Caves of Zakynthos is by boat tour. This is the perfect way to not only see the Blue Caves, but learn more about them from an expert guide and see surrounding areas as well.

About the Blue Caves of Zakynthos

The Blue Caves are one of Zakynthos, Greece’s most popular attraction. Located at the northwest coast of the island, these beautiful geological formations begin just after Agios Nikolaos and go to Skinari Cape. Their name comes from color of the water, which is created by light reflecting off of it. The series of geological formations have been created naturally by erosion. The limestone arches are just large enough to allow small boars to pass through.

The largest cave is called Kianon, named for cyan, has stalactites that hang from the top of the cave. Kianon is one of the caves that you can visit. The caves were discovered in 1897 by Antonio Komouto.

Tour the Blue Caves of Zakynthos

The best way to see the Blue Caves of Zakynthos is by a boat tour. The caves are only accessible by sea except for one spot between Agios Nikolaos and Skinari Cape. You can get there by car and then descend about 100 steps to a piece of coast where the caves are located. When you reach the bottom, there are some rocks. The rocks aren’t ideal for relaxing on, but the area is a good place to swim around and explore the caves.

The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are a popular place for scuba divers. If you want to scuba dive, it’s recommended you be experienced and go with experienced guides. A wonderful time to visit the Blue Caves is in the morning when the light is most abundant. If you can’t visit then, don’t worry, you will experience the amazing colors any time of day. During the late afternoon, the sea is a more reddish color thanks to the setting sun.

The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are usually part of any boat tour around Zakynthos. As one of the island’s most popular sites, the Blue Caves attract many visitors. Some of the boat tours also include Shipwreck Beach, which is another well-known attraction in Zakynthos. Shipwreck Beach is also known as Navagio Beach and Smugglers Cove. The beach is aptly named for the abandoned ship that still rests that.

When visiting Zakynthos, don’t miss out on the breathtaking Blue Caves.

Zakynthos is one of those islands that is particularly known for its natural beauty, which means that once you arrive here, you’ll surely want to find some ways to enjoy it! Whether you wander over to the western side of the island to observe its thick forests or prefer to enjoy its beauty from the comfort of a lounge chair on the beach, there is something on this island for everyone. Here are some ideas on how you can enjoy nature on the beautiful island of Zakynthos:

Spend Some Time at the Beach

There are several beaches located here that are considered amongst the most beautiful in all of Greece! Many of them, such as Navagio Beach, have some distinct features. Not only is the water a gorgeous, crystalline blue, but there is also a shipwreck here that makes for some unique photo opportunities. Porto Limnionas Beach is also worth a visit, especially since it is filled with natural rock features, some of which surround pools of warm seawater. No matter which beach you decide to visit, however, you will be treated with a unique aspect of Zakynthos’ stunning scenery. Other beaches include Kalamaki Beach, Gerakis Beach, and the Xygia Sulfur Beach.

Visit Some of the Island’s Caves

Another thing that Zakynthos is known for are its caves. There are several throughout the island, but not all of them are easily accessible for visitors. Consider visiting the Blue Caves, which jut on top of the water and also make for a great photo opportunity. You can also rent a kayak or canoe and paddle right up to the caves from the shore. Since many of the island’s caves are located at the shore, you can also charter a boat or take a tour that will bring you around to some of the island’s best caves and alcoves. Besides the Blue Caves, you should also find a way to visit the Keri Caves, which have an even more stunning view than the Blue Caves do.

Take an Excursion to Marathonissi

Marathonissi, or Turtle Island, is a small island located off the coast of Zakynthos that is particularly known for attracting turtles to its shores. You can easily book a boat excursion here from some of the islands. Be sure to bring your camera because aside from looking out for turtles, there are also some stunning views from the island. During your excursion, you will also have the chance to go for a swim in the warm waters.

Visit Cameo Island

Are you looking for a small island that affords stunning views of the whole area? Cameo Island is one of those small islands that is easily accessible from Zakynthos. It’s small, but you don’t need to rent a boat to get here. You can trek to it by using the small wooden bridge that connects it to the mainland. Take a few pictures of the surrounding area and explore the rocks before you head home. Cameo Island also makes for a nice swimming hole.

When on the Greek island of Zakynthos, you won’t want to miss the chance to enjoy nature doing these activities!

The Olive Press Museum showcases a unique and fascinating part of the history and culture on the island. This is one of the only places on the globe where the olive trees have doubled in the last few years. The quality of the soil and the climate of the island enable the production of extremely high-quality olive oil. Here’s more information:

About the Olive Press Museum

The Olive Press Museum is also a traditional family business. The business began in 1850 with a traditional animal movement press. As time passed, the family began using a metal press, then eventually a hydraulic press. Every expert knows all olive oils are far from being equal. The secret is in both the olives and the processing. Some of the dopia olive trees on the island are more than 2000 years old.

The museum has a lot to see, including a 1500-year-old olive tree and the tools and machinery used to make incredible olive oils and soaps. The machine-run stone mill is definitely worth seeing. By 2008 the technology evolved for the creation of an eco-driven process using new technology. The family practices the highest quality of certified organic methods or integrated management in their production. The entrance to this fantastic museum is free.

Take a Guided Tour

The museum is located near Lithakia, in Pantokratoras village. You can take a guided tour to see the step by step process for producing olive oil. The production began during the eighteenth century with a woodenpress and continued to the modern centrifuge machinery of today. The temperature for the Artisteon manufacturing process is always below 27 degrees Celcius. You can even dip home-baked bread into the amazing Zakynthian olive oil. You will love the divine taste of the new varieties including garlic oil and lemon oil. Not only is the tour entertaining, but you will also have a lot of fun.

Stop By the Shop

Make sure to stop by the shop to purchase some of your favorite olive oils. The extra virgin olive oil is a favorite. This oil is of extraordinary quality, cold-pressed and derived right from local olives. The organic extra virgin olive oil comes from local organic crown olives. You can choose from the lemon-flavoured olive oil containing fresh lemons and olives, perfect for grilled fish and salads, garlic-flavoured olive oil for biscuits, marinating meat, green salads and cakes or the orange-flavoured olive oil with the divine flavour of bitter oranges. Every olive oil is a reflection of the robust, fruity flavour and deep green color of Zakynthian olives. There is even sensational olive soap available.

The museum has something to offer for adults and children alike. The process of making so many different kinds of olive oil is fascinating. If you have never seen an olive tree, you are in for an unexpected treat. The unique and robust flavor of the Zakynthos olive oil is absolutely delicious and the trees are beyond description. You’ll want to visit this charming museum while in Zakynthos!

This beautiful islet is not inhabited by people, preserving its unspoiled natural characteristics. The island is known for its pine, green oak, and olive forests, creating a lush canopy of greenery to contrast with the shoreline and turquoise waters. Marathonisi Islet boasts two distinct beaches. One beach is distinguished by its soft white sand while the other shoreline features a pebble beach. Visitors will also delight in exploring the two sea caves perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

This endangered species of turtles travel to Marathonisi Islet in the summer to reproduce. Because of the fragile nature of these turtles, visitors to the islet are not allowed to roam the island.

When visiting Marathonisi, you are required to remain on the first five meters of the beach area so that the breeding process of the Caretta Caretta turtles is not disrupted. Zakynthos, Greece is an island that is hard to ignore. It is home to beauty that includes crystalline waters, the pine-covered mountains, the caves, and captivating sunsets. Zakynthos also boasts history in the form of shipwrecks, castles and fortresses, monasteries, and monuments. A special piece of Zakynthos that you should explore is the Venetian Bridge.

About the Venetian Bridge in Zakynthos

The now ruined Venetian Bridge in Zakynthos, Greece is located in the small harbor of Argassi, just 10 meters from the seashore. It stands today, half in the sea and hand on the sand. The bridge has three arches, each of which is 13 meters long. The bridge is made of tufa. Tufa is a type of limestone that is formed through natural springs. It contains a lot of holes, and nooks and crannies. The construction of the bridge can be compared to that of a Venetian watchtower. Also known as Argassi Bridge, it was built in 1805, according to the plaque that is found above the center arch. The bridge is slowly being eroded away by the sea.

What to Do at the Venetian Bridge

The Venetian Bridge is a fascinating piece of history to see. It also makes a wonderful place to take photographs. Imagine the changing colors behind it as the sun sets. If you’re a photographer or just love taking creative photographs of your family, this is the ideal spot. Walk along what’s left of the bridge and explore each arch.

The Venetian Bridge is found at Argassi Beach, which is just 5 km from the capital of Zakynthos. Argassi Zante beach is long with golden sand. The beach also has water sports facilities. Paragliding, sea-skiing, and sea-biking can all be done at Argassi Beach. There are showers, umbrellas, and sun beds available at the beach. Taverns, shops, and bars can all be found in the area.

While you’re in Argassi, you might want to see the Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa. This is the oldest monastery on the island. It was built during the first half of the 15th century in the shape of a cross. The road to get to the monastery isn’t the smoothest, but it’s worth the trip to see it and the view. The monastery was built on the site of a temple of Armetis. Inside the monastery there are paintings of saints and an icon of Panagia Skopiotissa.

If you are travelling from Zakynthos Town to Argassi, you can rent a car, bike, or bicycle. You can also take a take if you prefer, but if you rent a car, you can sightsee at your own pace and it won’t cost as much in the long run.

If you are visiting the island of Zakynthos, you will want to check out the Venetian Bridge in Argassi. It might not look like much to see, but it is a fascinating piece of history.
