The Greek island of Zakynthos boasts culture, tradition, and history. From the castles and monuments to the villages and monasteries, the history of the island is clear. Of all the churches and monasteries in Zakynthos, Greece, you should be sure to visit the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon.

About the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon

Also known as the Monastery of Agios Georgios Gremnon or Vrahon, the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon is located at the northwestern side of the island of Zakynthos, above Navagio Beach. In fact, the monastery site offers a wonderful view of Navagio Beach and the Ionian Sea. The Monastery was founded in 1535 and throughout the years a number of ecclesiastical men would live there.

One of these men was Agios Gerasimos, the protector of Kefalonia. The stone watch tower was originally constructed to protect the area from pirate attacks. The monastery once held a library, which is now kept in the Marcian Library of Venice. The library of the monastery included the Nannian Codes. The original murals of the monastery were destroyed during different wars. One of these murals included one painted by Loukas Romanos in 1606.

Stop by the visitor’s center to learn more about the important residents of the Monastery that include Pahomios Roussanos and Agios Gerasimos. Two monks live at the monastery today, but visitors are more than welcome to explore the external areas of the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon. When you enter the courtyard, you will see where the monks live to the left as well as a middle tower and the small church to the right. The circular tower was built to defend the monastery from attacks.

While visiting the monastery, take the time to explore Navagio Beach, which was originally known as Agios Georgios. In October of 1980, a ship ran aground at the beach and remains there today. There are rumours that the ship was smuggling, but there has been no evidence to support this. The ship was abandoned at the beach and remains a popular attraction. The beach is also famously known as Shipwreck Beach. The site was also featured in the Korean Drama “Descendants of the Sun.”

To visit the Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon, you must first get to Zakynthos. You can do this by catching a ferry from Killini, a port town on the western side of the Peloponnese or by plane. The island of Zakynthos has an airport and receives flights from Athens, which takes about 45 minutes.

The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon is located on the northwestern side of the island of Zakynthos, just above Navagio Beach. You can get there by taking the bus, which makes stops all around the island, taxi, or rental car.
