If you want a great spot to take some really great photos in Corfu, look no further than Kanoni and Mouse Island! Kanoni’s views are unbeatable here, surrounded by the shimmering blue ocean and the impressive 17th-century church, Panagia Vlacherna. A 5 minute boat ride will take you to Mouse Island, tiny but filled with luscious green and an even more impressive history. It is said that the island was the ship of Ulysses.

Achillion Palace

This palace once captured the admiration of Austrian Empress Elizabeth, and now enthralls locals and tourists alike. Encircled by Greek legend Achilles statues, this beautiful structure has many wondrous sights to behold, both inside and out. Just below rests the stunning Corfu coast that adds additional beauty to the atmosphere.

Spianada Square

Spianada Square is a central sightseeing spot that can’t be missed. In the center lies a Venetian fountain representing the island’s influence from its territorial rulers over the years, including France, Britain, and Italy. Even more impressive, this square is believed to the largest in all of the Balkans.

Municipal Gallery

Art lovers will find an endless amount of sights to see and activities to partake in at the Municipal Gallery. The gallery’s collection mostly consists of 19th-century paintings and carvings and holds many seminars, workshops, and lectures for a more immersive experience. Located in Gastouri village, this palace once belonged to Empress Elizabeth of Austria. She loved Greece and was inspired by its mythology to create a palace that reflected its ancient heritage. As such, much of the artwork in the palace is dedicated to the mythological legends and gods. The palace was built in 1890 and its gorgeous grounds and landscaping will leave visitors wandering its halls and marveling at its artwork for hours. With the picturesque Corfu shoreline below, the view from up above leaves a most remarkable impression.

This museum also offers a number of conferences and symposiums every year to learn more about Greek folk history.

The palace features extraordinary colonial architecture that has been a treasured part of Corfu heritage. Over the ages, the palace eventually became one of the residences of the royal family of Greece. A notable royal, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born in the palace. He is the husband to Queen Elizabeth II of England. Additionally, the palace is a wondrous sight to behold with its lush gardens and elegant treasures. The palace is now utilized by the Municipality of Corfu and visitors are allowed throughout the year.

Byzantine Museum

This museum was originally constructed in the 15th century as a Byzantine Church and was transformed into a museum in 1984. It is located within the Church of Virgin Mary Antivouniotissa. To this day it holds some of the most revered items from the Byzantine period of history. The exhibits extol the historical significance of the many religious items on display. Sunset scene of Vlacherna monastery Kanoni Corfu GreeceLike most places in Greece, Corfu has a rich history that extends all the way back to Ancient Greece. It was even part of Odysseus’s epic journey. At the end of his epic travels, he landed on the island where the Phaecans lived. We now know that this island is modern day Corfu. Much later in its history, Corfu became the stomping ground of the international jet set, and it was one of the first Greek islands that began to welcome tourists. Now, the island is filled with things to do that enchant visitors and natives alike. Here are some of the highlights:

Kassiopi

If you’re looking for an enchanting, traditional village to spend some time in, Kassiopi is it! This village provides a much needed escape from the tourist’s life. It offers a great option for people who want to venture out and explore what Greek village life is all about. Winding streets, friendly Greeks, and quaint cafes are all part of the charm here. Come here for just a few hours or spend the entire day wandering the streets and soaking up the Greek sun. Since it’s a traditional fishing village, you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sea, as well. This village certainly won’t disappoint!

Sissi’s Palace

The island of Corfu has long attracted the international crowd who is looking to escape from it all. One of the most famous of all the visitors was Prince Elizabeth from Australia, who was affectionately named Sissi. Sissi’s Palace, which is located in Gastouri, is where she stayed while visiting the island. Today, you can spend time by taking a tour. It is worth it to do simply because it is such an important part of Corfu’s history. It’s also gorgeous!

Paleokastritsa Beach

You can’t visit a Greek island without spending some time at the beach! If you only have time to visit one beach, Paleokastritsa Beach is one that you won’t want to miss! This beach can get crowded and with good reason – it’s absolutely stunning. Corfu is one of those islands that is a popular stop for cruise ships and many people head to this beach. Don’t let them discourage you, though. There’s plenty of room for everyone!

Old Fortress Corfu

Another part of Corfu’s rich history can be observed at the Old Fortress, which is actually part of Corfu Town. According to visitors, this is one of the most beautiful access points in the city. A remnant from the Venetians, this fortress also boasts some of the best views in all of Corfu. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Paleokastritsa Monastery

There are plenty of monasteries located throughout Greece, and each of them has a charm that makes it worth visiting. The Paleokastritsa Monastery is no exception. This is also a popular excursion for cruises, which means that the inhabitants are friendly and welcoming of  visitors. You don’t need to be part of a cruise to access it, though. Anyone can visit during its opening hours!

While on the island of Corfu, consider visiting these essential places!

It’s easy to forget yourself while visiting any of the Greek islands, and Corfu is no exception. Popular with the international jet-set crowd, it’s easy to see why. This is the type of island where people flock to in order to relax, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so here. In particular, the island has many enjoyable beaches that are worthy of your time. If you find yourself on Corfu, you won’t want to miss at least some of these beaches:

Paleokastritsa

If you are looking for a resort community, Paleokastritsa is the place to be! During peak tourist season, this is where people tend to flock, and with good reason. It is completely gorgeous and has excellent views of the sea! When beachside enjoyment is high on your priority list, this is definitely the place to be. There are plenty of worthwhile properties here to base your stay on. There are also tons of restaurant, shopping opportunities, and nightlife options in the surrounding area that will make your stay here even more enjoyable.

Agios Gordios

Located 19 kilometers away from Corfu Town, this beach is an excellent alternative to Paleokastritsa because it doesn’t get as busy. It’s the ideal spot for those who don’t want a secluded beach but also don’t want to be overwhelmed by large crowds. This beach is a happy medium. It is a sandy beach that is surrounded by some pretty rock formations and is also family friendly.

However, it is also a popular beach that can draw hefty crowds during the peak tourist season.

Sidari Canal d Amour

In order to find a beach that isn’t as crowded as some of the others, you will need to travel further away from Corfu Town. Sidari Canal d Amour is one of the prettiest beaches in all of Corfu, but it takes a little bit more effort to get there. Located in the northern side of the island, it is well worth the trip because it is one of the most picturesque beaches on the island.

Issos

This beach is also located far away enough from Corfu Town to make it less crowded, which is especially good during peak season. Located in the southernmost part of the island, this is a great beach for people looking to relax as well as those who love outdoor sports, such as windsurfing. You can easily spend the day here relaxing in the golden sand and splashing in the gorgeous blue waters.

Some of these beaches do experience large crowds during the summer. If you would like to avoid the crowds, consider traveling to Greece in May, September, and October. The weather is still nice but the resort areas aren’t as crowded as they are in peak summer.

Corfu is one of those islands that captivates visitors. It has a long history of tourism, and was one of the first in Greece to actively invite guests to stay. As a result, there are many areas that have plenty of things to do that are geared towards these visitors. In fact, places like Paleokastritsa in Corfu are especially known for its beaches, resorts, and even the nightlife. Yet, there’s a lot more to Paleokastritsa that that. There are some great museums to visit here, as well. Here’s an overview of some of the best:

Paleokastritsa Monastery Museum

If you love museums, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the one at the Paleokastristsa Monastery. Here, you’ll be able to glimpse the religious history of the area and see artifacts such as rare icons that date from the Byzantine Era, holy relics, books, and more. While here, you also won’t want to miss the chance to visit the grounds and learn about the history of the monastery itself.

Corfu Aquarium

Another place that is worth a visit during your stay in Paleokastritsa is the Corfu Aquarium. Although this isn’t usually what people think of when they envision a museum, this is a popular place for visitors and locals alike. It is small but incredibly interesting since it does offer people a chance to learn about sea life that lives in the waters near the island. In order to get the most out of a visit here, it is a good idea to take one of the guided tours.

Byzantine Museum

Although the Byzantine Museum is located in Corfu Town, you don’t have long to go from Paleokastritsa in order to get there. By car, Paleokastritsa and Corfu Town are only about 45 minutes away from each other. This museum is worth the drive, however, since it features a nice collection of Byzantine art and also offers a nice overview of the history.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum is also located in Corfu Town, so if you’re staying in Paleokastritsa it will take you about 45 minutes to get there by car. However, this museum is worth a visit since it does give a nice overview of the archeological history of the island, as well as displaying some artifacts of the island’s archaeological sites. There are also some things on display that originated in other parts of Greece.

Casa Parlante

Are you looking for a unique way to experience history? If so, then the drive to Corfu Town will be worth it for you. This “living history” museums delivers historical facts in an interesting and engaging way. By using robotics and other interactive elements, it gives visitors a new way to learn the facts. History doesn’t need to be boring!

As you can see, Paleokastritsa itself doesn’t have too many museums to visit. If visiting the Aquarium and the museum at the monastery weren’t enough, luckily Corfu Town has some choices, and it won’t even take an hour to drive there!

Corfu is an island in the Ionian Sea off the northwest coast of Greece. It is defined by its resort-filled shoreline and picturesque mountains. Although its character is traditional, it also has a cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are plenty of things for people of all ages to see and do while here, including families. Here’s more information:

Corfu Museum of Asian Art

Home to a great collection of artifacts, Chinese ceramics, and jade carvings, this Museum has something for everyone. Indian, Japanese and Chinese sections all boast lovely historical displays, each of which tells its own story. The collections contain over 10,000 artifacts from the 11th Century BC to the early 19th Century. Artistic collections include bronze Indian sculptures, Chinese porcelain and Japanese printed pictures.

House of Lena

The House of Lena Museum in Mykonos is a furnished, middle-class Mykonian house built in the 19th-century. Named after Lena Skrivanou, the home’s last owner, it contains old mirrors, wood carvings, painted plates, tapestries, and rich, antique furnishings. Two courtyards and a dovecote are also part of the structure, and it is a popular landmark among visitors from throughout Greece and other areas of the world.

Gyzi Castle

The Castle of Gyzi is part of Ano Mera Village, and is situated on a hill high above the center of the island. The structure dates back to the 13th Century and some parts of the Castle are still preserved in their original state. In this area, one can also view ancient Mykonian ruins, including an old fortification wall, ancient cemetery and prehistoric market. The 18th Century Church of the Holy Savior is located near the castle as well, and excellent views of the island’s northern side can be enjoyed from any standpoint nearby.

Delos Archeo Museum

Built in 1904, the Archaeological Museum of Delos grew from five to nine large rooms in which fascinating displays are located. Here, one can view rare historical statues, prehistoric pottery creations, and items used in the everyday lives of those who lived in Greece centuries ago. Displays change from time to time in the museum, and something new is constantly being added to bring visitors back in the future.

Maritime Museum

Since 1985, the Aegean Maritime Museum of Mykonos has been a favorite among those vacationing in Greece. The museum’s objective is to study and present Greek nautical history. The museum’s exhibits include ancient tools, centuries-old maps and engravings, historic shipping documents, and ship models from the early Minoan era until the early 1900s. It also houses manuscripts and rare books, and its gardens exhibit marble pieces and other items thought to be cargo from ships that were lost at sea.

Regardless of the personal preferences of each traveler, Corfu Island has something for everyone, including families. When planning a trip to any of the landmarks outlined above, visitors should make sure they have adequate time to view everything each one has to offer. It is wise to allow at least a few hours to fully experience all of these attractions.

Kassiopi is a lively, yet peaceful town that is located on the northern coast of Corfu, Greece. Stunning white beaches with cobalt waters border this village, and the rich history that dates back to Roman times make it a fascinating place to spend a vacation. Following are five great things to do while spending time in Kassiopi.

Kassiopi Tower

This historical site sits on a hill that overlooks the bay of Kassiopi and the channel between Corfu and the mainland. The Kassiopi Tower was built in Roman and Byzantine times as a lookout and has since been pillaged by the Ottomans and Venetians.

Despite its past, the stone remains still stand tall on the hillside and can be seen from the town below. The tower can be accessed by a short hike from Kassiopi, providing an elevated view of the harbor and an opportunity to walk around the ruins and surrounding olive trees.

Old Perithia

Old Perithia is an intriguing old ghost town built on Mount Pantokrator that lies inland from Kassiopi. The ancient village was built during Byzantine times and was once a bustling town that kept its inhabitants out of sight from passing pirates. It is one of the oldest permanently inhabited communities in Corfu.

The various stone structures remain as a testament to the past, and there are still a few beings that live amongst the crumbling buildings. Old Perithia can be easily reached by bus from Kassiopi, and visitors can spend the day exploring the old buildings and churches and visiting some of the few taverns that continue to operate near the main square.

Kalamionas Beach

This picturesque beach is a prime spot to kick back and relax in one of the many sunbeds and swim in the calm turquoise waters from the pebbly shore. Snorkeling and scuba diving allow visitors to enjoy the variety of fish and underwater creatures just off the coast. Kalamionas Beach lies within walking distance from the center of Kassiopi, and there are many hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops that are set right behind the beach.

Avlaki Beach

Avlaki Beach is a quiet slice of paradise a few kilometers outside of Kassiopi. White pebbly sands stretch down to the crystal waters that meet the Albanian mountains in the distance, and sun beds and parasols can be set up for a relaxing day enjoying these views. This beach offers many watersports, including sailing, boat trips, canoeing, and paddle boarding. There are a few taverns located near the beach that serve delicious local eats.

Bataria Beach

Located near the port of Kassiopi, this quaint beach is in close proximity to numerous bars, shops, taverns, and accommodations along the main road of the town. Despite its small size, this cove is an exquisite location to set up the beach gear for the day. The rocky perches at the corners of the beach offer a pristine spot to lay out a towel in the sun, and the water is clear, offering a view of many fish that can be seen near shore.

Kassiopi is a great place to spend time on the beautiful beaches of Corfu, and there are various activities that can be done near the water or around the town to ensure a fun-filled vacation in this wonderful destination. These five spots are some of the best of Kassiopi and are a must-see when in the area.

If you are planning a trip to the Greek island of Corfu, you will find no shortage of charm and beauty! This is especially true of all the villages there, and there are a lot to visit. We covered some of them in a previous article. While you could spend your entire visit on the island in resorts, here are some more villages you really should see while there:

Corfu Town

Corfu is not just the name of the island, it also the name of the picturesque city that stands as the capital of the island. The history of this city goes back thousands of years, and its old town is named on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city has also been called Castle City because of its two castles that date back to medieval times.

Among the many interesting sites in the city include:

  • Spianada Square
  • Ionian Academy
  • Town Hall
  • Ionian Parliament
  • Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George
  • Square of the Saint
  • Vlacherna Monastery

There are also many fine shops and restaurants throughout the city, and lots of gorgeous houses and other buildings.

Palaia Peritheia

What makes Palaia Peritheia so interesting is that it is actually a ghost town. Centuries ago, it was the richest village on the entire island, but today the only thing left is about 100 meticulously maintained houses and 8 churches. Walking through the cobblestone streets of this mountainside town is like walking through time. It is a great way to pass a lazy afternoon.

Lefkimi

Lefkimi is the second largest city on Corfu, and it is noted for its charming canal that cuts through the eastern part of the city. It also boasts excellent beaches as well as plenty of restaurants and shops and beautiful churches. You can easily spend a day there while passing through its narrow alleys and its squares, and you can further visit the surrounding vineyards and olive tree orchards.

Skripero

Those looking for a perfect view of the sea should head over to this little village not far from Corfu city. The village also has its own amphitheater and lots of beautiful Venetian houses to gaze at. It is further close to Ano Korakiana, which is a town noted for its abundance of pretty churches. All this makes the area a great afternoon excursion while staying in Corfu city.

Strinilas

If you find yourself in need of getting away from the heat, Strinilas is a good place to go. Located on top of the tallest mountain on the island, this village offers plenty of cool air and impressive views of both Corfu city and the northeastern coast of the island. There is also a well-known winery in the town, and you can taste its wonderful Moscato wine at various taverns in the area.

No visit to Corfu is complete without visiting all the wonderful villages the island has to offer! They have excellent views, great views, beaches and plenty to do during your stay!

Paleokastritsa is no different. During peak season, the town can get busy – but this somehow doesn’t take away from its romantic charm. If you are headed to Paleokastritsa, you certainly won’t want to miss the beaches! Here’s a look at the area’s best choices:

Agios Spyridon

One thing that sets Agios Spyridon Beach apart from other beaches in Greece is that it is completely made up of sand, whereas a lot of other beaches have small, smooth pebbles on their banks instead of sand. This is also considered to be one of the most popular beaches in the area because in addition to it being sandy, it’s also gorgeous and family-friendly. It’s also easily accessible by car, taxi, and other forms of transportation and there is a huge parking lot that can accommodate a lot of vehicles. Guests of the beach can also spend their time not only bathing in the sun, but by eating at one of the beachside restaurants or enjoying a cocktail or two.

Agia Triada

Although there is some sand here, it doesn’t make up more than half of the beach. Despite that, it is a convenient beach with a healthy strip of sand that is the most easily accessible to Paleokastritsa. If you want a convenient place to lay out in the sun for a few hours before doing other things, this beach is idea. It’s also very scenic and is surrounded by greenery.

Ampelaki Beach

Are you looking for a great beach to spend a few hours, but that doesn’t get as busy as some of the more popular beaches? Since about 70% of Ampelaki Beach is covered with sand, this helps control the crowds somewhat. The rest of the beach is made up of those small, smooth pebbles that are found in other beaches throughout Greece. However, the fact that the beach is nestled between rocks makes it a pleasant escape that’s certainly worth visiting!

Platakia

If you prefer sandy beaches, you might want to avoid this one, as most of it is covered with pebbles. However, if you would rather spend time lounging in a sun bed on a beach that has ample shade and is fairly quiet, Platakia Beach is the place for you! Because some of the other area beaches are made up of sand, many people pass this one by, which means that the crowds are kept to a minimum even during peak season.

Lagrotta

Despite the fact that 100% of this beach is covered in rocks, this is one of the most famous oceanside spots to visit in Paleokastritsa! It is ideal for those who have an adventurous side since it takes a bit to descent the steps to get to the ocean. People flock here for a unique swimming experience and to jump off the rocks.

These Paleokastritsa beaches are certainly worth a visit!

Corfu, Greece - August 31, 2014: Sunbathers relax on Sidari beach on the Greek island of Corfu. While visiting Corfu, you will learn that the island is largest enough that you can have the type of Greek island vacation you really desire. Whether you want to spend time at a resort or would like to find something a little more isolated, there are options on the island to satisfy you. Sidari is one of those places that is a definite favorite amongst travelers, and the beaches here are amongst the island’s best. Here’s an overview of some of the best beaches in Sidari:

Canal D’Amour

If you only have time to visit one beach during your stay in Sidari, you won’t want to miss the Canal d’Amour! However, this beautiful, natural location is more than just a beach. It is filled with picturesque rock formations and it is possible to go off the beaten path a little bit to explore the natural beauty. This is a great spot to take photographs, as well, and there are some bars and restaurants nearby that overlook the canal so that you can enjoy the scenery from afar. During peak tourist season, this attraction does get busy. If you know you want to visit this spot, consider visiting Corfu in some of the off-season months, such as May, September, and October.

Sidari Beach

Sidari Beach is the perfect spot for you if you’re craving a traditional beach. Easily accessed from Sidari, this is an easy beach to spend the day at. The water here is extremely shallow, too, which makes it an ideal choice for families. There are services nearby, as well, such as restaurants and bars, as well as some chairs to rent. Many of the chairs are free to use if you are a patron of one of the restaurants. There are also some opportunities to enjoy water sports here, such as water skiing, snorkeling, and banana boat rentals.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach, also referred to as Logas Beach, is another option for a beach when you’re staying in Sidari. Although the beach is actually located in the village of Peroulades, it can be easily accessed from Sidari. It’s well worth the trip, as well, because this is one of the best swimming spots in the area. Since it isn’t located directly in Sidari, this means that it won’t be as crowded as Sidari Beach or the Canal d’Amour.

Apotripiti Beach

Another great beach to spend the day at is also located in Peroulades. Apotripiti Beach is a gorgeous, peaceful beach that is about 300 meters long, which means that there is plenty of space to accommodate a large number of people. This is a perfect spot for those who are looking to find a beach that is a little more peaceful than some of the beaches that are closer to Sidari. Despite the fact that it is fairly peaceful, it is still possible to rent sun beds and umbrellas.

While in Sidari on the island of Corfu, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit these gorgeous beaches!

Corfu is a Greek island that possesses beauty and history. The island is home to a number of castles that will impress you and take you back in time. One of the most important castles on the island of Corfu is Angelokastro Castle. Here’s what you should know about Angelokastro Castle.

About Angelokastro Castle

Thought to date back to the 13th century, Angelokastro Castle is located at the highest point of Corfu near Krini. Angelokastro Castle is known for the domed gate at its entrance. The castle was built to help protect the residents from the Venetians and pirates from Africa. It is believed that an ancient emperor was looking for a high rock to build a fortress where any pirates approaching could be seen. During his search, he came across Angelokastro Castle.

Angelokastro Castle, also known as Angel Castle, was part of the defensive triangle that included Kassiopi and Gardiki. It is thought to be one of the most important Byzantine castles in Greece. The most significant remains of the castle are the chambers and the church. The church at Angelokastro Castle is dedicated to angels Michael and Gabriel. The church was constructed in a cave.

Visit Angelokastro Castle

The climb to Angelokastro Castle is worth exploring what’s left of the important site as well as enjoying the view. The climb can be steep, so don’t rush. You will want to head up in the morning to avoid the midday sun and heat. There may also be fewer people the earlier you go as well. You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring the remains of the castle and take in the view of the sea and surrounding landscape.

At the entrance, before you begin your climb up to the site of the castle, you will find a restaurant and local produce for sale. You can find some unique flavoured and delicious jams. It’s important to note that Angelokastro Castle is closed on Wednesdays. There is a small admission fee, but parking is free if you drive.

You can also take this opportunity to explore the old village of Krini. The village features old traditional houses and a tiny, charming square that serves as a roundabout. There is one taverna in the village of Krini. Nearby is the village of Makrades where there are more places to eat. Near Makrades is the start of a donkey path. This cobbled footpath follows the clifftop leading to Agios Georgios.

Getting to the island of Corfu can be done by plane or by ferry. The airport of Corfu is located near Corfu Town. Ferries to Corfu come from Patra and Igoumenitsa, but flying is the quicker and more convenient option especially if you’re coming from Athens, Thessaloniki, or travelling internationally during the summer months. Once on the island of Corfu, renting a car offers the most flexible way to explore, but you can also take a taxi or bus.
