It was even part of Odysseus’s epic journey. At the end of his epic travels, he landed on the island where the Phaecans lived. We now know that this island is modern day Corfu. Much later in its history, Corfu became the stomping ground of the international jet set, and it was one of the first Greek islands that began to welcome tourists. Now, the island is filled with things to do that enchant visitors and natives alike. Here are some of the highlights:

Kassiopi

If you’re looking for an enchanting, traditional village to spend some time in, Kassiopi is it! This village provides a much needed escape from the tourist’s life. It offers a great option for people who want to venture out and explore what Greek village life is all about. Winding streets, friendly Greeks, and quaint cafes are all part of the charm here. Come here for just a few hours or spend the entire day wandering the streets and soaking up the Greek sun. Since it’s a traditional fishing village, you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sea, as well. This village certainly won’t disappoint!

Sissi’s Palace

The island of Corfu has long attracted the international crowd who is looking to escape from it all. One of the most famous of all the visitors was Prince Elizabeth from Australia, who was affectionately named Sissi. Sissi’s Palace, which is located in Gastouri, is where she stayed while visiting the island. Today, you can spend time by taking a tour. It is worth it to do simply because it is such an important part of Corfu’s history. It’s also gorgeous!

Paleokastritsa Beach

You can’t visit a Greek island without spending some time at the beach! If you only have time to visit one beach, Paleokastritsa Beach is one that you won’t want to miss! This beach can get crowded and with good reason – it’s absolutely stunning. Corfu is one of those islands that is a popular stop for cruise ships and many people head to this beach. Don’t let them discourage you, though. There’s plenty of room for everyone!

Old Fortress Corfu

Another part of Corfu’s rich history can be observed at the Old Fortress, which is actually part of Corfu Town. According to visitors, this is one of the most beautiful access points in the city. A remnant from the Venetians, this fortress also boasts some of the best views in all of Corfu. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Paleokastritsa Monastery

There are plenty of monasteries located throughout Greece, and each of them has a charm that makes it worth visiting. The Paleokastritsa Monastery is no exception. This is also a popular excursion for cruises, which means that the inhabitants are friendly and welcoming of  visitors. You don’t need to be part of a cruise to access it, though. Anyone can visit during its opening hours!

While on the island of Corfu, consider visiting these essential places!
