Thessaloniki, Greece - December 24, 2015: People walking on the coast in Thessaloniki next to the white tower which once guarded the eastern end of the city's sea wallsWhen traveling to Greece, people often gloss over Thessaloniki in favor of other destinations, such as Athens. However, ask people what their favorite Greek travel destinations are and Thessaloniki often tops the list in favor of anywhere else.

The reason for this is that Thessaloniki has a charm all its own. It has a unique blend of thriving cosmopolitan life mixed with the easy, relaxed charm of a smaller place. In other words, when visiting this city, you get the best of both worlds.

Here’s an overview of some of the best things to do in Thessaloniki:

Archaeological Museum

One of the most impressive archaeological museums in all of Greece, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit, especially if you love learning about the ancient history of Greece. Artifacts from throughout the Greek state of Macedonia are housed here, including those that date back to prehistorical times. You’ll also enjoy viewing the impressive Derveni Crater, which is a large bronze vase ornately inscribed with various scenes from mythology. The museum also has Greece’s oldest surviving piece of ancient Papyrus.

White Tower

The White Tower of Thessaloniki is one of the most recognizable features in the city. Perfectly located by the sea, there are some amazing photo opportunities here. You’ll also want to pay the entrance fee so that you can enter and climb the tower because it gives you such an amazing view of the surrounding area. Your photos will still be great, however, even if you decide not to climb it because the views surrounding the tower are also incredible.

Monument of Alexander the Great

One of the most interesting things about Thessaloniki is that it is located in the state of Macedonia, which is rich in history and culture. Alexander the Great is perhaps its most famous inhabitant and in order to pay him tribute, there is a statue in the city dedicated to him. Although it takes only moments to gaze at it, seeing it is a reminder of the region’s colorful past. Not only is the statue well-made, but there are also some great views in the area near it.

Greek Agora and Roman Forum

Another great place to learn about Thessaloniki’s extensive history is by visiting the Greek Agora and Roman Forum. Although it is in ruins, enough of it is still intact to give visitors an overview of how grand it really was. It takes a bit of time to walk here but most visitors report that the trek is worth it. You can also opt to take a guided tour here if you want to really learn about the history.

Museum of the Byzantine Culture

This museum has on display anything that is part of the Byzantine culture that has survived in Macedonia. This is an impressive place to visit for history buffs and tourists alike. It features a permanent collection that offers in its inventory frescoes, metalworks, paintings, sculptures, mosaics, coins, pottery, and more.

Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda

The arch was built around 298 A.D. After the capture of the Persian capital of Ctesiphon by the Roman Emperor, Galerius, the structure was eventually dedicated to him. Various religious groups, such as Christians and Moslems, have used the Rotunda as a place of worship.

Thessaloniki is one of the biggest cities in Greece, just second behind Athens, the country’s capital city. It is also the home of on of the country’s biggest ports, and is second behind the the port of Piraeus. Just because it isn’t as big as Athens, however, this doesn’t mean that Thessaloniki isn’t worth visiting. In fact, it really does have a charm all its own.

One of the areas that captivates visitors and locals alike is the old town. It is located in the northern part of the city and has some old monasteries and churches. While in Thessalonik, there are a lot of great things to do. Sure, there are some great landmarks to explore, beaches to visit, and museums to spend time at. There is also some interesting shopping experience to enjoy. In fact, the Modiano Market has long been a top-rated attraction in Thessaloniki, Greece. While here, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit. Here’s more information about this unique market:

About Modiano Market

History lovers and admirers of fine architecture will also appreciate the market’s history and exquisite architectural design and can take many great pictures to share with their friends and family. The market is also located a short distance from the city’s train station and waterfront, which should give people even more reason to visit. Both locals and tourists often flock to the market to get great deals on fresh foods or grab a drink or bite to eat at one of the market’s tavernas or bars.

Thessaloniki is home to a thriving Sephardic Jewish population, and the synagogue known as Talmud Torah served as the main place for the city’s Jews to congregate for many years. In the summer of 1917, a massive fire raged across much of Thessaloniki and burned many of the city’s buildings, including the synagogue.

Birth of a New Market

A few years after the fire, architect Eli Modiano, who came from one of the city’s most prominent Sephardic Jewish families, decided to build a market on the site of the old synagogue. The education that he received while studying architecture in France was put to good use when he designed the building that would house the new market. The location in the city center seemed to be an ideal location for the new attraction. Construction on the market began in 1922 and was completed a few years later. Since then, many people from all over the world have discovered the market and all the wonderful things that it has to offer.

Explore a Variety of Foods

Foodies can find a wide range of foods as they browse through the market’s vendor stalls. Some of the finest cuts of fresh meats are often sold here, and the bargain prices on many of the selections entice many shoppers to buy. Spices that are used in classic Greek dishes and other international cuisines can also be bought at the market. Ripe fruits and fresh vegetables attract even more shoppers who are looking for the best selections. Many visitors to the market have also given the desserts that are sold here positive reviews.

Grab a Bite to Eat at the Market

In addition to shopping, visitors who come to the market have the option of grabbing a bite to eat and a cocktail at one of the market’s tavernas or bars. Anyone who wants to enjoy some alfresco dining can take a seat at one of the open eateries and people watch as they enjoy a satisfying meal. After bargain-hunting around the market, shoppers can stop and have a drink to get into a more relaxed mood.

Modiano Market is a must-see attraction for anyone who plans to spend time in Thessaloniki. From its intriguing beginnings to its great opportunities for shopping, there are many reasons why Modiano Market has become one of the city’s most popular points of interest.

ThessalonikiAs Greece’s second largest city, there is certainly no shortage of things to do in Thessaloniki. In fact, it’s an ideal city for people of all ages! Thessaloniki is vibrant and youthful, is an excellent city for walking, and has enough museums and historical sites to satisfy any history buff.

Here’s an overview of some of the best museums that Thessaloniki has to offer:

White Tower and Museum

The White Tower is one of the most distinct landmarks in Thessaloniki. The tower is part of the old fortification that used to be present around the city. Although these fortifications are no longer being used in the way that they used to, they are still an important feature of the city. The White Tower wasn’t the first tower built on this spot. Fortifying the city is not a new concept and there are some towers that came before. This rich history is showcased at the White Tower Museum located on site.

Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

If you’re interested in the Ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedon, this is a great museum for your to visit. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki has an impressive collection of artifacts from prehistory and ancient times that come from Macedon and Ancient Greece as a whole. There are multiple floors here, so there is more than enough to keep you busy for a few hours.

Museum of Byzantine Culture

The Byzantine Empire was an important part of Greek history, and the Museum of Byzantine Culture provides the perfect backdrop to learn about it. This is one of those rare museums that is ideally suited to both beginners and those who have studied Byzantine history and culture for some time. As a result of that, this is a great museum for people of all ages. There are more than 3000 objects here, including mosaics, tomb paintings, and jewelry.

Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki has a rich Jewish heritage and history, and this beautiful museum is a nice tribute to that legacy. The museum is devoted to tracing the city’s Jewish history, beginning with the 15th Century up until the time when the Jewish population in Greece was decimated during the Holocaust. The museum itself is housed in the building that served as the headquarters of the old Jewish newspaper.

Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art

Sure, Greece does have an ancient history and past, but that’s not the only thing that is celebrated in this country. There is a modern culture, as well, and nothing displays that more clearly than the art that is created in present-day Greece. The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art showcases modern Greek artists and their works and brings them to an international audience.

Ataturk House

The Ataturk House is one of those historical sites that is also a museum. The founder of Modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal, also known as Ataturk, was born here in 1881. In order to visit this museum, you will need to bring your passport and another form of identification since it is part of the Turkish consulate. However, it is well worth the effort.

Cinema Museum

If you want a fun and informative museum to visit while in Thessaloniki, you should stop into the Cinema Museum, which is all about the culture and history of the cinema in Greece. Here, you will see items related to cinema, such as cameras and projectors, as well as information about popular Greek movies. They also have a large cinema archive here with over 2000 films in its library.

When it comes to visiting Thessaloniki, there are a variety of things to do in addition to visiting some of the great local museums. When you’re not visiting a nearby beach, eating in a restaurant, or walking the streets, visiting a museum is the perfect thing to do! Plus, it gives you the chance to learn about different aspects of Greek history and culture.

When you need a break from enjoying the sites from within the city, there are plenty of other things to do! Here is a list of some of the best day trips that you can do that are near the Thessaloniki, Greece area:

Kavala

Thessaloniki isn’t the only city in the region that is worth a visit. Although Kavala isn’t nearly as big, it is an historical place, which makes the bus ride from Thessaloniki worthwhile. It was built in the 6th Century B.C. and remains as one of the major port cities in Greece. You can easily spend the day here wandering the streets, shopping, and taking in the history. To get the most of it, you might want to take a tour once you arrive.

Meteora

View of Rousano monastery at Meteora.Meteora is one of the unique places in all of Greece to visit. Here, you will be able to see the unique monasteries, which are perched directly on top of the cliffs. However, in order to do this as a day trip from Thessaloniki, you need to be willing to spend several hours on the bus.

Buses regularly leave Thessaloniki to Trikala on a daily basis and from there, you will need to take another bus to Kalambaka, which is at the base of Meteora. If you don’t want to spend that much time on the bus, consider spending the night in Trikala before you continue your journey to Kalambaka and Meteora the next day.

Vergina

If you love to look at Ancient Greek archaeological sites, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Vergina. Located just 90 kilometers from Thessaloniki, Vergina is the home to the Archaeological Site of Aigai, where the ancient Kings of Macedon were said to have been buried. It is thought that this site contains the tomb of Phillip II of Macedon, who was the father of Alexander the Great. You won’t want to miss the chance to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Pella

Another must-see day trip from Thessaloniki is in Pella. This small town is roughly a 1.5 hour bus ride from the city, but the trip is worth it so that you can see the Edessa Waterfalls. These gorgeous falls are considered amongst the most beautiful in all of Greece. Spend some time hiking through the area, and don’t forget to snap some pictures on the bridge. Don’t forget to spend some time gazing at the pools at the base of the falls, as well. Pella is also an ancient city and there is an archaeological site here that is also worth checking out before you head back to Thessaloniki.

Mount Olympus

If you’re interested in Greek mythology, you’ll want to make the time to visit Mount Olympus. Located about 100 kilometers from Thessaloniki, this historical site is an easy day trip. You can either take the bus or hire a taxi driver to take you there. Besides gazing at it and snapping a few pictures, this also makes a nice hike. Just make sure you are prepared with the right footwear, plenty of water, and some food.

These day trips from Thessaloniki are an excellent way to spend time outside of the city!

One of the things travelers love most about Thessaloniki, Greece is a stroll along the beach promenade where the inner side leads to its storied neighborhoods. There’s Aristotle Square, a favorite stop for coffee, Ladadika, for exciting nightlife, and Old Town with narrow streets and stone houses. The Egnatia Quarter is the centre of this city and is located by the sea, which means it has some excellent views as well as plenty to do. Here’s more information:

Roman Market

The Roman Market, known as the Roman Agora in ancient times, was the heart of the city. People came here for everything from shopping to governing beginning in the 3rd century B.C. until the early Byzantine period in the 5th century A.D. It was constructed around a rectangular square with three sides containing two lofts.

The southern loft had seating at a double vaulting and a semi-basement. The eastern loft of the transept had a building display that functioned as a conservatory. Earthquakes or enemy invasions destroyed the structures after being deserted during the Byzantine Period. Much of the complex has been unearthed and visitors can explore the ancient ruins and attend cultural functions.

Arch of Galerius

One of the most fascinating ancient structures in Thessaloniki is the Arch of Galerius. The monument was ordered to be built by the Roman Emperor Galerius as an arch that a road could pass through to connect to his palace. Its main purpose was to celebrate victory over the Sassanid Persians. Featuring roman monumental architecture from the 4th century A.D., each pillar had crafted marble panels that are decorative as well as narrative. Representations of ancient events and the imperial family can be easily recognized.

Church of Agios Demetrius

This structure was erected to honor the patron saint and Roman soldier Dimitrios who was killed around 306 AD after Emperor Galerius, a known persecutor of Christians,  ordered it.  Dimitrios was secretly baptized as a Christian which, at that time, was gravely forbidden. An underground crypt at the martyrdom site contains a silver reliquary with Dimitrios’ relics inside. The church was restored after the Great Fire of 1917 in keeping with the original architecture. Interesting features retained include the 7th-century Byzantine mosaics which adorn the pillars on each side of the entrance to the apse.

Archaeological Museum

One of Greece’s largest and most loved museums, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki displays artifacts from several periods including Pre-historic, Archaic, Hellenistic, Classical, and Roman. Opened in 1962, the building was designed by architect Patroklos Karantinos and celebrated the liberation of Thessaloniki. Sculptures displayed were excavated from Thessaloniki and the Macedonia region. Artifacts in the museum come from excavations conducted since 1912 as well as other hand-in antiquities.

Thessaloniki is both an ancient and modern city at once. A stroll through the Egnatia neighborhood captures the imagination and takes visitors to places in time with ruins and restorations that have been lovingly preserved to reveal the ancient past.

Thessaloniki is Greece’s second largest city, but it is often overshadowed by Athens so visitors don’t often make their way here. However, it is absolutely worth visiting because the cit is worth visiting for a variety of reasons, including its history, beauty, and a cuisine that stands apart as one of the best in Greece. Another reason why you should come here is because the nightlife is amongst the best in Greece. Here’s a look at the best clubs and bars to visit during your stay in Thessaloniki:

The Hoppy Pub

Popular amongst travelers and locals alike, the Hoppy Pub, which is highly-rated establishment, is truly a gem that is worth finding. If you love beer, you’ll have an even bigger reason to come here since they are known for their beer selection. Most people don’t realize that there is actually a thriving beer culture in Greece, and this pub is one of the many ways to enjoy it. Even if you don’t spend the whole night here, it is in a convenient location since it is just a short walk from the White Tower historical landmark and is worth a visit for at least a few hours. They are especially known for their extensive craft beer selection.

Dentro Sto Bar

Dentro Sto Bar is another place that celebrates the beer culture in Greece, and this time the establishment is modeled after a traditional German beer garden. However, visitors report that it is so much more than that! Visitors usually report that they are impressed with the beer selection, especially the beers that are on draft. Although it is modeled after a German establishment, however, the feel of it is still distinctly Greek. You’re sure to have a great time while here!

Arabella Cruise Bar

If you’re looking for something a little more unique, you should consider heading to the Arabella Cruise Bar, also referred to as the Arabella Floating Bar, for your night out. What makes this place so special is that you will actually be able to enjoy your night out while in the water. This ship, which is decked out in a pirate’s theme, cruises around the bay while those on the ship take in the views while also having a few drinks. It’s creative and definitely worth doing, especially if you love boats.

Thermaikos Cafe Bar

The Thermaikos Cafe Bar is a great place to visit, especially if you want to have a few drinks while eating some delicious food. The decor is cozy and intimate, and this is a hot spot not just for tourists but for locals as well. You can easily come in here at any time of the day and find a lively crowd. It isn’t just a spot for evening – you can enjoy yourself all day.

It is true that Thessaloniki has a reputation as being one of the best places in Greece for nightlife. There are a lot of clubs and bars here, and no matter which you choose you are sure to have a great time.

Thessaloniki is one of those cities that has enchanted people for centuries. As a result of this, it has a diverse history. At once an historical city and a place where the youth of Greece seem to convene, this city is always changing. However, the historical parts of the city are so important, they shouldn’t be ignored. Here’s a look at the top historical sites you should visit when you travel to this city:

Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

If you want to spend some time learning a lot about the city’s past, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. There are many artifacts on display here that were excavated not only in the city, but also in Macedon as a whole. It officially opened in 1962 but fell in disrepair after some time had passed. It has since been renovated and restored and is open to visitors again. During the restoration process, many of the exhibits were also restructured. Visitors report that the museum itself is interesting and well organized.

White Tower

The White Tower is not only an historical landmark, but it is also one of the things that has come to symbolize Thessaloniki. The tower dates back to the 1500’s when Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent had it built. It stands perched over the waterfront and enabled the citizens to keep watch over the sea and the surrounding areas. At the time, Thessaloniki was fortified and it, along with one other tower, was part of this fortification.

Arch of Galerius

This is another of those historical sites that has become a symbol of Thessaloniki. Galerius, the Roman Emperor, had the massive structure built as part of a road that would connect his palace to the main road that stretched through the city. The arch was made to instill a sense of majesty and wonder on those who passed through it. It served a reminder of the presence of the Roman Empire. Today the arch still stands and is one of those that you absolutely must visit while you’re here.

Ano Poli

Ano Polo, which literally means “Upper Town” in Greek, is actually the Old Town of Thessaloniki. One of the most interesting things about this section is the fact that most of the buildings are old. There are plenty of old Byzantine buildings and churches here, and it can be fun to pass the time by walking the streets here. This section of the city is definitely filled with history and you can definitely sense that while you are here.

Thessaloniki has a history that stretches all the way into ancient times. It was founded in 335 B.C. by the king at the time, Cassander of Macedon. It has played an important part in the history of Greece as a whole. Instead of fading into history, Thessaloniki is still thriving and is now the second largest city in Greece behind Athens. It has its own distinct character, though, which means that Thessaloniki is definitely worth a visit.

Thessaloniki is a city with a rich tradition of art and culture. If you want to explore this side of the Greek city while visiting Thessaloniki, you will want to spend time touring the Teloglion Foundation of Art. Here’s what you should know about the Teloglion Foundation of Art.

About the Teloglion Foundation of Art

The Teloglion Foundation was founded in 1971 thanks to the donation of personal property and the impressive art collection of Aliki and Nestor Teloglou. The donation was gifted to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in 1999, the building was passed on to the city of Thessaloniki. This is one of the most important collections of art in Greece, containing more than 8,000 pieces. The collection ranges from Modern Greek to European art. The bond that the collection owners had with the artists makes this collection even more special.

The goal of the Teloglion Foundation of Art is to inspire and education the public with art. They hope that people will not only be interested in learning about art of the past and present, but become inspired to collect art themselves and study more about their culture.

Tour the Teloglion Foundation of Art in Thessaloniki

Located at the northern side of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki campus, the Teloglion Foundation of Art is housed in a 6,500 square meter building that is surrounded by an impressive 24,000 square meter forest. The design of the building was decided via a competition that was held in 1982.

A tour of the museum will take you over three floors and 2,500 square meters. The exhibitions are divided into small areas and different rooms. Each area is monitored for humidity, temperature, and light to protect the showcased pieces. Collections at the Teloglion Foundation include paintings from 1930’s artists such as Tsarouchis and Gounaropoulos; sculptures by artists including Pastra and Sklavos; portraits and other important pieces from the Eptanisian School; and much more. There is also a European art collection that includes pieces by Salvator Rosa, Boucher, and others.

At the Teloglion Foundation of Art you will also have access to temporary exhibits. This is a unique opportunity to see art that you might not otherwise have the chance to view.

How to Get to the Teloglion Foundation of Art

Getting to Thessaloniki is convenient as it is accessible by most means of transportation. Thessaloniki is home to an airport, so if you’re coming from a distance within Greece or from one of 60 foreign cities, this is your best option. If you enjoy travelling by train, Thessaloniki is home to a train station. You can also get to the city via bus, cruise ship, or car.

Once in Thessaloniki, the main modes of transportation are taxis and bus. If you enjoy biking, this is an option that is becoming more popular in the city. You can also walk as the distance between landmarks, the coastline, and places to eat are not far from each other. Walking is a wonderful way to get around while exploring more of the city at your own pace.

Thessaloniki is a Greek city that full of history and beauty. It is also the second largest city in Greece, which means that there are plenty of sites to see here, as well as a rich history. Remains of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires can still be seen today. An important historic site in Thessaloniki is Hagios Demetrios Church.

About Hagios Demetrios Church

Located in Thessaloniki, Hagios Demetrios Church was built as a small church on the site of a Roman bath. The church was originally built during the early 4th century AD. In 413 AD, a larger basilica with three aisles was constructed. Unfortunately, it burnt down in 634 AD and a larger five-aisled basilica was built. This church is still standing today and is actually the largest church of Greece.

During the Turkish occupation in 1493, Hagios Demetrios became a mosque. Then in 1912, it became a Christian church once again. A fire destroyed the church in 1917, but it was rebuilt using the original plans, so what you see is what existed for centuries. The reconstruction took many years, but in 1949 Hagios Demetrios Church was once again reconsecrated.

Patron Saint Demetrios – Protector of Thessaloniki

The patron saint protector of Thessaloniki is Saint Demetrios. As a child, Demetrios got baptized secretly, as it was forbidden at the time to be baptized. Saint Demetrios was the son of a wealthy military commander. Demetrios also joined the army and would become an officer. After the death of the Roman Emperor Maximian’s father, all Christians of Thessaloniki were ordered to be killed.

Saint Demetrios refused to change his faith and was thrown into prison and tortured. Before he died, he donated everything he had to the poor. His sacrifice for his faith made him a saint. In 1988, Hagios Demetrios Church was added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Visit Hagios Demetrios Church in Thessaloniki

Hagios Demetrios Church is an important and fascinating landmark you will want to explore when visiting Thessaloniki, Greece. Inside the church you will see beautiful Byzantine mosaics that have been restored. These mosaics depict children of the city and of course Saint Demetrios.

If you enjoy tours, you may like a tour of Thessaloniki that includes Hagios Demetrios Church as a point of interest. A tour is beneficial if you want to get information from a knowledgeable guide who knows history and details surrounding the church.

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece, and as a result of this, there is plenty to see and do while here. Long seen as a cultural epicenter, there are plenty of historical and cultural landmarks to visit. One of these must-see places is the Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church. Here’s what you should know about Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church so that you can fully enjoy your visit:

About Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church

Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church is located in the Old Town of Thessaloniki. The locals refer to the Old Town as Ano Poli. The church is located at the northeast corner inside the eastern wall. It is thought that the church was first attested during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church was originally part of a monastery. To the east of the church you can still see remnants of the gate of the monastery. The name of the church comes from the fact that Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nikolas) was the protector of orphaned children.

When the church was first built, it was a single-aisled church that featured a wooden gabled roof. The church would later have aisles added on three sides. Underneath there is an ambulatory where a number of graves were found. These graves, along with a marble temple and courtyard, were discovered during the 1950s and 1960s when restorations were taking place. The remained active for many centuries and during the Ottoman occupation, it remained as it was, having not been turned into a mosque.

What to See at Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church

Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church is dated between 1310 – 1320, so it makes an ideal historic sight to see. The church is known for its frescoes, which cover much of the interior of the church. They feature outstanding color and are an example of the Thessalonican School during the Palaiologan Renaissance. These frescoes were likely created by the same person who did the Hilandar Monastery at Mount Athos in 1314.

The frescoes of Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church date to the 1300s and depict the life of Christ, His Crucifixion, and His Resurrection as well as the marriage in Cana, the lives of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Gerasimos Ioardanitis, as well as themes of the Akathist Hymn. During a tour of Agios Nikolaos, you can view the graves, courtyard, and marble temple.

When visiting Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church it is recommended that you don’t wear shorts or sleeveless shirts. The church is located in a quiet area of the city, so you can enjoy a relaxing and peaceful visit to the church and surrounding area. Ano Poli itself has good food and music to enjoy after a day of sightseeing.

Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church can be accessed by walking through a beautiful maze of paths. The church is located along Apostolou Pavlou St at Irodotou St. You can get there by walking through the beautiful narrow streets of the historic neighborhood.

While in Thessaloniki, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Agios Nikolaos Orfanos Church.

The institutional organization is a center of theatrical productions and artistic education. A trip to the region wouldn’t be complete without a visit to any one of the venues for a cultural experience. Here’s more information about this:

About the National Theater of Northern Greece

The National Theater of Northern Greece is more than a theater company, but a cultural institution made up of several theater venues and art schools all focusing on different disciplines. Every year, several performances are put on by the production companies within the organization, and even more festivals are hosted to celebrate the beauty of art and dance. There are several activities beyond theater that visitors can enjoy when they visit the National Theater of Northern Greece. The theaters in house productions are often the main event, and a worthwhile experience if the National Theater is on your itinerary during your trip to the region. However, there are additional productions put on my traveling organizations from around Greece and the world, as well as collaboration productions.

In addition to theatrical performances, there are artistic related exhibitions, conferences, viewings, and cultural festivals all hosted within the theater space. Vlatadon Monastery was founded in the mid 14th century by two brothers, Markus and Dorotheus. Its located at the top of the Old Town of Thessaloniki, a port city in northern Greece. A trek up to the Moni Vlatadon reveals both natural and created beauty, as well as a rich history of Thessaloniki and the Byzantine Era. Here’s more information

Early History of the Monastery

The monastery began its life thanks in part to a royal grant from Byzantine Empress Anna Palaiogos and was given royal status because of this. The brothers who founded the monastery are generally held to be from Thessaloniki by birth, traveling with Saint Gregory Palamas before returning to their home city. The monastery was built land where, according to legend, the Apostle Paul preached to the Thessalonians in 51 A.D, during his second mission.

In the 1380s, under Ottoman Turkish occupation, the main church was converted into a mosque, and the frescoes were plastered over. Eventually, it returned to being a Greek Orthodox church, and as it no longer claimed royal status by that time, the second Turkish occupation allowed it to remain a church, even entrusting it with relics from the Church of Hagia Sophia when the latter was converted into a mosque.

Abbot Ignotios Konstantinou led the Vlatadon Monastery through a period of renovations and repairs from 1755 to 1814. Over a century later, in 1965, the Patriarchal Institute for Patristic Studies was founded there, as the monastery had become a place of learning.

Legends Associated with Vlatadon Monastery

One popular tale of the Vlatadon Monastery comes from its time under Ottoman occupation. A guard captain damaged the monastery and then became gravely ill. While he was sick, the guard captain had a dream of an old man who promised to cure him if he repaired the damage he had caused. The ill man did repair the monastery and recovered. From then on, he was a great friend to the church. There is some evidence that this story does coincide with historical fact, including the grave of a guard captain by the south door of the Katholikon (main church building), believed to be the captain from the story.

Spending Time at the Monastery

Vlatadon Monastery is a ranked as a UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the fifteen that are in the city of Thessaloniki. Frescoes decorate the walls, and tour guides share the rich history of the monastery. There’s also a collection of religious art in a small museum on the grounds. Breathtaking panoramic views of Thessaloniki can be seen from the site and its surroundings. Occasionally, the monastery will also have temporary exhibits, such as one of early Christian icons in early 2019.

Vlatadon Monastery is a place to feel history come alive, learn about the past and see beautiful works of religious art. It is a connection to both the early days of Christianity and the rich tradition of Greek Orthodoxy. It is absolutely worth a visit, especially while visiting Thessaloniki!

Seven TowersA fire that broke out in 1917 spread quickly throughout the city of Thessaloniki and destroyed about two-thirds of the city. Due to the Great Thessaloniki Fire of 1917, tourists who travel to the city are met with more modern architecture as the city had to completely rebuild. However, one area of Thessaloniki remained completely unscathed by the fire. This area is known as Ano Poli (Upper Town in English) and today is home to the historical portion of the city. Walking through the Upper Town will give visitors a sense of Thessaloniki’s Byzantine past, in contrast with the modernized city center.

The Upper Town preserves Thessaloniki’s Ottoman-era attributes including small stone-paved streets, old city squares, and houses built in traditional Greek and Ottoman fashion. Besides taking a look at the old-world architecture, those who travel to the Upper Town are treated to views of Mount Olympus from across the gulf (on a clear day of course).

Here are a few points of interest in Thessaloniki’s Upper Town, Ano Poli:

Thessaloniki Acropolis

While “Acropolis” may bring to mind the Acropolis in Athens, Thessaloniki has its own Acropolis that can be found at the highest point of the city (which just also happens to be located in Upper Town). The Thessaloniki Acropolis features two large gates (called “Portaras”) that lead inside the Acropolis. The structure was used as a second line of defense should the city come under siege.

Tower of Trigonio

Just to the edge of the Acropolis is the Tower of Trigonio (Triangle Tower). The tower was erected where the Eastern Walls of the city begin as a way to strengthen the walls by functioning as a fortress. Climbing to the top of the tower offers fantastic views of not only the city of Thessaloniki but the bay area as well.

Heptapygrion

Built as a Byzantine fortress, the Heptapygrion served as a prison from the end of the 1800s to 1988. Now the structure (which in English means The Seven Towers) hosts a small museum documenting the building’s history. Visitors can view inscriptions from the Ottoman Empire that were etched into the brick of the building.

Church of Osios David

Known as the Blessed David, this church was built in roughly 500 AD in honor of Galerius’s daughter. Galerius was a Roman Emperor who opposed Christianity. According to legend, the church honored his daughter Theodora who converted to Christianity secretly and hid a tiny Christian shrine in the area. Inside there is a beautiful mosaic in the dome of the apse, which depicts a rare beardless Jesus with a halo and is surrounded by four symbols of the Evangelists. The mosaic was hidden under a layer of calfskin during the 8th and 9th centuries to protect against destruction and was forgotten until 1921.

Panagia Chalkeon

Completed in 1028, the Panagia Chalkeon is one of the oldest churches in the city to display the domed cruciform style. Chalkeon is derived from the word copper as the church is in the traditional copper-working area of Thessaloniki. Inside the church is filled with ceramic ornaments and mosaics. Those who visit the area will see artisans and workers stop by and the area surrounding the church has shops that sell traditional copper crafts.

Thessaloniki is a city that is a mecca of arts, culture, and innovation. As the city is a major economic hub in the geographic region of Macedonia, it also is home to an array of cultural and social festivals that are a treat to both Greek locals and travelers alike.

There are three major annual festivals that happen each year in Thessaloniki, each one appealing to a variety of interests and hobbies. Depending on what time of year you travel to Thessaloniki, you’ll be sure to find a festival or event that appeals to at least one person in your travel group (in addition to all of the other cultural and historical treasures the city of Thessaloniki has to offer).

Thessaloniki International Fair
When: Every September

The first ever Thessaloniki International Fair (also known as the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair) was held back in 1926. Parliamentarian Nikolaos Germanos approached the Ministry of National Economy with an idea for an international fair, which would be the first ever type of fair held in Greece. The inaugural fair attracted major domestic and international businesses. Today, the fair is organized by HELEXPO and takes place every September at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition Center.

Attendees are treated to an array of exhibitions. Unlike niche specific trade shows popular in the United States, the Thessaloniki International Fair is a meeting ground for businesses in multiple industries including information technology, agriculture, food, lifestyle, tourism, and home goods. It is estimated that over 1,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries are in attendance each year for the event, which lists over the course of a week in September.

Thessaloniki International Film Festival
When: Every November

Founded in 1960, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival celebrates independent filmmakers in Greece and in the surrounding areas. In fact, the festival has become the one of the primary showcases for new and emerging filmmakers in the Balkans. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival also features an International Competition for 1st and 2nd, which draws in an audience from across Europe and across the globe. The event is held every November and takes place at different venues across Thessaloniki.

International Book Fair
When: Every May

Held every May, the Thessaloniki Book Fair was established in 2003 and is hosted by Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sports, and General Secretary of Culture in collaboration with Helexpo, the Hellenic Federation of Publishers and Booksellers. The event is held at the Helexpo Exhibition Center and features publishers and authors from Greece as well as over thirty other foreign countries. In addition to appealing to book lovers and bibliophiles alike, the event has also included in past years a poetry festival, Comics festival, and a special children’s book component.

Thessaloniki also hosts other exhibitions each year including the Thessaloniki Hip Hop Festival, DMC DJ Championship, Video Dance Festival, and the International Festival of Photography.
