Located on Egnatia St. In the Helexpo Exhibition Centre in Thessaloniki, the Macedonian Museum for Contemporary Art was established in 1979. The aim of the museum is to promote Greek and international contemporary art and to make a contribution to Greek cultural life. The museum has acquired many of its 2,000 works of art from donations and collectors. The first donation to the museum was from Alexandros Iolas who was a fan and collector of the modern arts. The donation consisted of 30 works of art by internationally acclaimed artists. This collection forms the core of the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art hosts permanent, temporary, and touring exhibitions. They showcase the work of world renowned artists as well as young, up and coming artists. The museum is home to paintings, sculptures, engravings, and photography by artists including Moralis, Vakalo, Emo, Raynoud, Delacroix, and Zouni to name just a few. The museum also offers publications to the public that are related to contemporary arts such as painting, sculpture, photography, and monographs by various Greek artists. The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art loans out work to other museums as well.

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art consists of three floors. The first floors is where you will find workrooms where art courses are held. The second floor is where the exhibition rooms, video room, gift shop, cafe, and staff offices are located. On the third floor is the library, the conference hall, and more exhibition rooms.

In the museum shop you can buy books on contemporary art, monographs of major art movements of the 20th century, and copies of famous artwork. In the shop you will also find jewelry and decorations.
