It is no surprise that Greece is a popular destination for tourists. This birthplace of democracy has many sites that will keep you interested and entertained for days. There are, of course, the well-known destinations such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon, and you should certainly check them out. However, if you have an interest in the military history of this ancient and storied country, you should consider checking out the War Museum of Athens. Here’s more information:

Learn About War History of Athens Through the Ages

Founded in 1975, The War Museum of Athens honors all those who have fought for the freedom of this cradle of democracy. It has several sections that cover military history from ancient times up until the modern era. In addition to seeing reproductions of equipment and weapons, you get to learn about ancient battles such as Marathon and Thermopylae. The education continues through to more recent times where you can see equipment such as early propeller and jet planes used by the Greek Air Force. There are even some planes outside and you can climb into the cockpit for added interaction and fun.

Visiting the War Museum of Athens

It is hard to fully understand Greece without learning about how war has helped to shape the country that it is today. This museum’s three floors of history will keep your attention for at least a couple hours. Of course, if you are a fan of military history, you will absolutely love this museum. There are numerous display cases showing off armor, swords, guns and outside exhibits of larger guns, artillery and the aforementioned aircraft. These make for perfect photo opportunities while posing next to some of this equipment. There are also newspaper clippings behind glass that give one a feel for how more modern conflicts such as Word War II were covered and its impact on Greece.

Located Near Other Attractions

This museum can be easily incorporated into a fun day of sightseeing thanks to its proximity to other attractions. It’s just under a mile away from the National History Museum and even closer to the National Garden in Athens. It is right next to the Byzantine and Christian Museum and a short walk from the National Museum of Contemporary Art. There are also plenty of places to eat and relax within easy reach.

Exploring the ancient ruins of Greece can be a breathtaking experience, but it can be nice to add a little variety to your next trip there. Once you’ve checked out the Parthenon and Acropolis, give serious consideration to visiting the War Museum of Athens. Its exhibits will educate children and adults alike about an important part of Greek history, and the kids will certainly love checking out the aircraft and other exhibits. Your next vacation will not be complete without seeing what it has to offer.
