Recipe for Greek Style Apple Spoon Sweet

Written by in , Comments Off on Recipe for Greek Style Apple Spoon Sweet

Spoon sweets, on the surface, may look the same as jams and jellies. However, they are vastly different, especially since spoon sweets are slightly thinner and have different flavor profiles. For this recipe, you’ll want to use the freshest apples you can find.

Greek Style Apple Spoon Sweet (Glyko Milo) Recipe Ingredients:

  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 cups water
  • 10 tart apples, such as granny smith, peeled, cored, and sliced into wedges
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon fresh, chopped lemon peel
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup sweet white wine, such as Mavrodaphne
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice

How to Make Apple Spoon Sweet:

Pour the sugar and water into a large saucepan and stir until well combined. Set the heat to medium and heat until all the sugar is melted. Stir constantly to prevent the sugar from sticking to the bottom of the pan.

Add the apples and cinnamon and cook together with the sugar and water until the mixture begins to bubble. Stir in the lemon peel, vanilla extract, and wine and cook until the apples are soft. This should take about 20-30 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice and cook the mixture for another 2-3 minutes.

Transfer to clean, sterilized jars and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
