This recipe uses either lamb or beef stew meat, depending on what you have on hand. The wine and cinnamon give this dish a unique flavor.

Greek Style Meat Stew With Green Beans (Yahni Me Koukia) Recipe Ingredients:

  •  2 tablespoons Greek olive oil
  •  2 pounds beef or lamb stew meat, cubed into 1 1/2 – 2-inch pieces
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/3 cup dry red wine
  • 1, 14 ounce can diced tomatoes, with the juices
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons chopped, fresh parsley

How to Prepare Greek Meat Stew With Green Beans:

Pour the olive oil to a large pot and heat over medium-high heat. Add the lamb or beef and brown on all sides. This should take about 5-6 minutes total. Remove the meat after it’s browned and set it aside on a plate. Add the onion and celery to the pot and lower the heat to medium. Saute together until the onions become soft. This should take about five minutes. Add the garlic and saute for another minute.

Add the meat back into the pot and then stir in the water, wine, tomatoes, tomato paste, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a boil. St the heat to low and then stir in the green beans. Simmer with the pot covered until the green beans are soft. This should take about 40-45 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley just before serving.
