It’s true that people flock to the Greek islands each year in order to enjoy Greece at its finest. The Greek island of Chios is rich in history, traditional, and natural beauty. The island is like a different world that will have you entranced from the moment you arrive until you leave. When visiting Chios, Greece you should see these prominent attractions and beaches.

Castle of Chios

Located on the northern side of the town center, the Castle of Chios is an imposing figure. Porta Maggiore, the main entrance of the castle, was constructed by the Venetians in 1694. Near the main entrance of the castle is Giustiniani Palace, an impressive building. The palace was built by the Genoese to house the headquarters of the administration. Today, cultural events are held there. The dark Dungeon is another building from the Genoese. It was used as a prison for seventy Chiots before they were executed. Other buildings within the Castle of Chios include the Ottoman Baths, the Cold Fountain, and the Tower of Koulas.

Beach of Mavra Volia

The beautiful beach of Mavra Volia is located on the northern side of the island near the village of Emporio. If you’re going to see only one beach while in Chios, Greece, Mavra Volia should be it. This long beach features black pebbles that were created by the volcanic eruption of that now dormant volcano of Psaronas. Mavro Volia Beach is actually two beaches. You can either swim to the other beach or take a path that goes over a small cliff. You will find places to get refreshments on the beach as well as showers and change rooms. The beach, the water, and the surrounding landscape make Mavra Volia Beach a must-see.

Monastery of Agia Markella

Located near the village of Volissos, the Monastery of Agia Markella is one of the most important pilgrimage centers on the island of Chios. The largest religious celebration in honor of Agia Markella is held at this monastery. Tradition says that the saint did not want to obey the desires of her pagan father and he chased her into the mountains where he would find her hidden in a bush. He burned the bush in order to force her out, but she ran and prayed to God to save her. Unfortunately, her father caught her, cut her head off, and threw it into the sea. For pilgrims who wish to stay overnight at the monastery, the cells of the monastery are available.

Agia Markella Beach

Agia Markella Beach is located in front of the Monastery of Agia Markella, the patron saint of the island. The beach is 40 km from Chios Town, but the perfect beach to visit if you’re also in the area to see the monastery. Agia Markella Beach is long and sandy with pebbles. The water is clean, cold, and deep. There is a path that leads to the spot where Markella died. At this spot, hot springs come up from the earth.
