Some of the most popular outdoor sports you can find around the island include climbing, canyoning, hiking, caving, scuba diving, skiing, and windsurfing. Another loved sport on the island of Crete is kitesurfing. Here’s what you should know about kitesurfing in Crete.

All About Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is a water sport that harnesses the power of the wind to allow a person to “surf” across the water on a board that is like a surfboard or wakeboard. A kite is used as a sail. Kitesurfing is a good workout as it requires the engagement of the core muscles for you to stay upright. Kitesurfing has been around since the 1400s, but gained popularity in the 1990s. Kitesurfing can be done in all types of water, from choppy seas to flat lagoons. As long as there is wind and water, you can kitesurf. Anyone can kitesurf, but if you’re a beginner it’s recommended that you take a lesson from an instructor.

Where to Kitesurf Around the Island of Crete

Arina Beach is one of the best places in Crete to go kitesurfing thanks to the winds that blow there and the waves that form. The crystal clear water is ideal for spending time on. At the organized beach of Arina you will find beach bars, sun beds, and a wonderful environment for spending a full day or an afternoon.

Elafonisi Beach is a beautiful and unique beach in Crete. It is known as the “pink beach of Crete.” Though the sand is white, in many areas it appears pink because of the broken seashells within it. Elifonisi Beach also features amazing green-blue waters. The beach truly resembles an exotic paradise. Kitesurfing at Elafonisi Beach is without a doubt one of the greatest experiences you will have. Other beaches that are ideal for kitesurfing around Crete are Kedrodasos, Ammoudara, and Kouremenos.
